Brian Entin Reports From Utah Valley University as FBI Releases New Person of Interest Photos

NewsNation correspondent Brian Entin reports live from Utah Valley University the day after Charlie Kirk's assassination, walking through newly released FBI surveillance photos of a person of interest wearing a hat, sunglasses, and a sweatshirt with an American flag emblem. Entin shows footage of the wooded area where investigators recovered a bolt-action rifle, and a ladder leaned against the building where the shooter is believed to have accessed the roof, a detail he says reminded him of the scene in Butler, Pennsylvania, after the attempt on President Trump's life. He explains that earlier persons of interest detained and questioned have since been cleared, and that the suspect is believed to have escaped by blending in as a college-age person amid the chaos. Entin also shares insight from a former FBI agent who argues the rural Utah setting actually makes tracking the suspect easier than it would be in a major city, along with a striking observation that a true professional sniper would typically target the head or chest rather than the neck, raising questions about the shooter's level of training.

A New FBI Photo of the Person of Interest

Brian Entin opens with what he calls the most important update of the day: new surveillance photos released by the FBI showing a person of interest believed to be tied to Charlie Kirk's shooting.

"You can see what this person of interest looks like. Looks like he's wearing a hat, sunglasses, a kind of a hoodie or sweatshirt, some kind of American flag type emblem on the front... jeans, white sneakers," Entin says, noting the images appear to come from Utah Valley University surveillance footage. "If you recognize this person, call the FBI right away."

Where the Rifle Was Found

Entin shows footage of a small wooded area between the university and a nearby neighborhood, taped off by investigators, where the FBI says a bolt-action rifle was recovered.

"It's not like a big forest. It's just a little wooded area between the university and a neighborhood," Entin says, noting FBI evidence teams were working the scene before he was asked to move back.

A Ladder That Echoes Butler, Pennsylvania

On the other side of a perimeter road, Entin points to the building where the suspect is believed to have accessed the roof, noting a ladder leaning against the structure.

"My first thought when I saw this was I was thinking of Butler," Entin says, referring to the attempted assassination of President Trump, where a similarly positioned ladder was used by the shooter. He says he isn't sure whether the ladder in this case was used by the suspect or placed there by investigators, but notes FBI personnel appeared to be photographing it closely.

Previous Persons of Interest Cleared

Entin clarifies confusion from the previous day, when an FBI Director's social media post suggesting a suspect was in custody turned out to be inaccurate.

"There is no suspect in custody. The persons of interest yesterday are not connected to the case, according to the FBI today," Entin says, referring to both an older man initially detained at the event and a second individual who was questioned and later released.

How the Suspect Got Away

According to the FBI, the suspect appeared to be college-age and blended into the panicked crowd fleeing the event.

"He blended in well and appeared to be college age," Entin says, describing the suspect's apparent escape route from the rooftop, across the perimeter road, into the wooded area where the rifle was discarded, and into the adjacent neighborhood.

Evidence Collected: Footprints, Palm Prints, and Forearm Imprints

Entin notes that investigators have gathered physical evidence beyond the surveillance images.

"They collected footprints, palm print, and forearm imprints for analysis," Entin says, adding that the FBI expressed confidence in its ability to track the suspect even before releasing the new photos, raising the question of whether other investigative leads had stalled.

A Former FBI Agent's Take on the Rural Setting

Entin shares perspective from a former FBI agent who previously worked in Utah, who argued the rural setting actually benefits investigators.

"It would be much more difficult if this happened in a big city like LA or New York... there's only like two major highways in Utah," Entin says, relaying the agent's view that fewer routes and less density make it easier to track someone in this environment.

Doubts About a Professional Shooter

Entin also relays a notable observation from the same former agent regarding speculation that the shooter was a trained professional.

"No real sniper would aim for someone's neck. He said you would either aim for someone's head or you would aim for their chest," Entin says, noting that Kirk appeared to have been shot in the neck based on available video.

A Campus and a Country in Shock

Entin describes a quiet, traumatized campus with classes canceled, and reflects on the broader national mood after covering several recent incidents of political violence, including the Minneapolis lawmaker shooting, the attempt on Trump's life in Butler, Pennsylvania, and the attempted assassination at Trump's golf club in West Palm Beach.

"The world just feels different today," a woman told Entin at his hotel that morning. "Political violence is not okay, and it's affected both sides," Entin adds, describing the abandoned amphitheater, still ringed with police tape, as "frozen in time."
