Charlie Kirk on Biblical Masculinity, Delayed Gratification, and What Young Men Need to Hear About Dating

Charlie Kirk delivers a message to young men about what true masculinity means through a biblical lens. In a culture drowning in instant gratification, substance abuse, and broken relationships, Kirk argues that self-control, duty, and delayed gratification are the pathways to becoming the kind of man worth following. He challenges both men and women on the dating crisis, calling out free sex culture, radical feminism, and the lack of strong male role models in education. Kirk doesn't hold back on practical advice either, from fitness and sobriety to paying for the first date. This is a counter-cultural call to pursue excellence, honor women properly, and build a life worth leading.

What It Means to Be a Man

To be a man is to have self-control over your fleshly desires and an attitude towards courage and defending those that can't defend themselves, fostering a family towards godly purposes and picking the fights that the rest of society should not be involved in. That's what men should do.

When asked whether non-religious men are less masculine, Kirk clarifies that while personal faith is an internal matter, society still judges what makes a good man through a Western Christian ethic. The Bible is full of great men and not-so-great men. Even the great men made mistakes—Moses killed somebody, Abraham sold his wife into slavery in Egypt—but they also did a lot of good.

The best story for young men right now is Genesis 12 of the Bible, which is basically: get off your tail, leave your father's home, and go on an adventure for God's purpose. Throughout the scriptures, men in particular are called at pivotal moments with the Hebrew word "heni," which means "here I am." God calls men to a place out of comfort and into duty. We see that with the calling of Isaiah, the calling of Samuel, Moses, and Jacob. Men need to be called sometimes not to what they want to do, but what they ought to do—that word being lost in America so much: duty.

Feelings, Therapy, and Reason Over Emotion

Men must have feelings, but women are more emotional—that is how they are wired. The issue is that men need to do their job in society, in families, and in marriages to always make sure reason triumphs over feelings. That is largely what the biblical role is and what made this country so great: deep feeling and also deep thinking in our life, both of which are necessary. If we're honest, we've had way too much feeling and way too much emotion-centric governing over the last couple of decades, especially the last ten years, and not nearly enough reason and calculation.

A man who's in touch with his feelings is fine. However, if that verges on the line of self-indulgent narcissism, there's a problem. The number one feeling you should have is adoration for a God that made you. The greatest feeling is to always petition those things to the Almighty.

Getting Closer to God

What you aim at is what you get. The first thing is you've got to read the Bible every day. If you want to get closer to God, stop doing sinful things. People say, "I'm not close to God," yet they were up till 3:00 a.m. drinking, doing weed all day long, watching pornography, and eating whatever they want to eat. The flesh dulls the spirit from getting closer to the Almighty.

If it makes you feel good in an instant, it's probably bad for you. A man versus a boy is someone who is able to say no to the things that feel good but aren't good for you over long periods of time. A man versus a boy is someone who's able to have delayed gratification—not going out drinking every night, treating women with honor and respect, staying up late and actually studying.

Success comes at a certain cost. If you want to be average, you can go be the chief executive officer for your local Bud Light Club. But if you want to be excellent at something, it means saying no to the flesh, saying no to the things that make you feel good all the time. Our society is highly addicted to substances, and we wonder why we have the most depressed, anxious, alcohol-addicted generation in history.

Standing Up Against Injustice

What it means to be a man includes standing up against injustice. The most masculine thing you can do is stand up against the injustice and the suffering of others. We are called to defend women—women that are being criticized, criminalized, or whatever the case may be, especially in our marriage.

Men are not called to go sleep with a hundred different women. That's nonsense. Find one woman for your life as a wife. Take her as your wife and have a family with that person. Monogamy takes effort. There is no skill in being polyamorous or polygamist. In fact, you'll end up being a very miserable person if that's the case.

The Crisis of Modern Dating and Radical Feminism

It goes both ways. Radical feminism tells girls to get as many sexual partners as they can, to sow their oats. Basically, what the feminists have done is like every 19-year-old boy's dream: every girl is easy and accessible and you don't have to work to get sex. In the way it should be, a boy should have to become a very mature, very sophisticated person to get to the point of sex. The boy doesn't have to grow up to get what he wants anymore.

A lot of this is on women who have basically become pseudo OnlyFans models, selling themselves for no price whatsoever because "free sex will liberate you." Let me say this as gently as I can: free sex drives young women insane. The more sexual partners a young woman has in college, the more likely she is to be clinically depressed and on anti-depressants.

Sex for men is totally different than sex for women. Sex for women is emotional attachment. It is relational. It is not transactional and not purely physical. For whatever reason, the way men were designed and wired, they could have sex with nine people over two weeks and just be like, "Okay, whatever." It's completely different for young women. We have told young women through this hyper-feminist model to go act like men, and a lot of people end up severely depressed.

Education is Too Feminine

Education is incredibly feminine in its approach and also in its staffing. Seventy-five percent of teachers before 8th grade are women. Nothing against women teachers, but this is a truism of life: young men don't like taking orders from women. It's just a fact of life. Young men need strong men to say, "Stop it. Be better." And they will sit down and shut up when a man tells them, especially one that has their act together.

We need more strong biblical men that have their act together to actually get involved in young men's lives. And women, for the love of everything holy and good, stop giving your body away to every man that wants it and save yourself for marriage. You are the supply of the problem. It's both sides.

If women were far more careful and pious with their sexual choices, men would follow. If all of a sudden the supply side of this equation were actually, "Sorry, you have to date me seriously and get married to have sex with me," all of a sudden men would be like, "Well, I better get my act together. I better get a job." Men will react to the signal of sex quicker than women will because young men, especially 19 to 20 years old, that's all they think about all day: sports and sex.

How Men and Women Think Differently

For young women, they're like, "What do you mean?" Like, "There's no way." This is a hilarious true study: Harvard University put 20 men in a room alone—no phones, no TV, no newspapers. They stared at a wall. They put 20 women in a room. They asked the men, "What did you think about?" They said they thought about sports and sex the entire time. They asked women, "What did you think about?" They said, "Oh, we were replaying conversations that we had earlier in the last couple of days."

It is very rare that a man will ever replay a conversation in history. Men are very forward-thinking. And finally, men are macro-thinkers. Women are micro-thinkers. That is why if you sit down with somebody on campus who is a woman, she's probably talking about the grades in her class, her relationships, her friends, or things that people said to her. You sit down with a man on campus, he's talking about his crypto wallet, whether or not his DraftKings account is in the surplus or in a deficit, and whether or not Donald Trump is going to take Greenland. The most macro thing imaginable.

We are wired differently, and it's time for our educational system to reflect that.

The Obligation to Do Difficult Things

You, especially as men, but women as well, you are obligated to do difficult and hard things. The West was built, our nation was built on delayed gratification, not instant gratification. Not "I'm going to go do what feels good in the moment." I'm going to forsake what feels good and I'm going to parlay that into the future.

The dating pool is a complete catastrophe. Men are unhappy with women. Women are unhappy with men. And you're both wrong.

Advice for Men: Stop the Self-Destruction

Men, very simple. If you are spending an inordinate amount of time staring at screens, playing video games, and not being active and productive, that is deeply unattractive to women. If you are addicted to pornography or watching it at all, stop doing that. If you are doing drugs and smoking weed, stop doing that.

I'll even go a step further. I personally do not drink alcohol. If you want to drink alcohol, that's fine. But if you want to be a high performer, Donald Trump doesn't drink alcohol. Tucker Carlson doesn't drink alcohol. I don't drink alcohol. It will set you back. Mornings will be a little bit more sluggish. You'll forget stuff. Nothing good happens after midnight while both parties are drunk.

If you want to have a life of ease, go keep drinking. But if you want to go do heroic and great stuff, maybe it's time for you to battle your flesh and not just always get drunk every single night. Instead of drinking alcohol, go to the gym. Instead of drinking alcohol, hang out with friends and talk about deeper, more purposeful things. Go to a Bible study instead of a bar.

Have a Destination and Self-Control

One of the most unattractive things that women find in men is that young men have no self-control. You need to have a destination in your life. If you are on a date and a young lady says, "Well, what do you do?" And you're like, "I kind of meander and I go on DraftKings and I own crypto and like I don't know"—loser.

Instead, it should be: "I'm studying this because of this. I'm going to start a business. I'm going to work for this person. I want to be able to make this much money by this period of time to provide for a family, and I don't care how hard it gets, but I'll provide for you and provide for the kids, and I'll be the protector and the covering over the family. Follow me because I'm going to lead us." That's what they want to hear.

Christianity Values Women Properly

There are voices out there that say, "Oh, young men, all modern women are garbage and just use them for sex and just use them for pleasure." And that's nonsense. You cannot be a Christian and believe that. Are there problems with modern women? Yes. But our Lord and Savior came to this earth through the womb of a woman. God could have just teleported Jesus Christ right onto the earth, but instead our Lord and Savior came through a womb of a woman. Christianity values women in a proper biblical context.

Some of the narrative that exists for men says, "Oh, I hate all women and they're not worthy of respect and honor." God used women all throughout the scriptures, whether it be Ruth or Esther, whether it be Deborah. Unfortunately, this is lost in a lot of the angst that young men have when they say, "I'm just done with all women."

Even if it's hard, maybe you should work to improve your own life to make yourself more attractive to the woman that you want to one day find.

Make Yourself More Attractive

The current modern state is that they want men to be women and women to be men. They want men to walk around in a beta state—in their sweatpants all the time, haven't showered in three days, sleep in till 3:00 in the afternoon. Nothing about that is interesting or attractive.

Men, you know what your call to action is? Go do something hard. Go do something difficult. That means wake up at 5:00 in the morning. Go for a run. And I'm going to go there: men, there's no excuse to be overweight. It's not interesting or attractive to women. Seriously, go to the gym. Stop eating so much crap. Go on the MAHA diet. Fast for a couple of days. Try keto. Eat a steak, not a soy protein latte.

Everybody in this room can make yourself 5 to 10% more physically fit. "Oh, Charlie, I'm just born this way." No. Everybody has their challenges or their struggles. Some people have metabolisms where they eat three pizzas and it disappears. I get it. But there is no excuse. You can make yourself 10% more attractive. You can go to the gym. You can fast. You can go on a better diet. You can decide, you know what? Another good thing about not drinking alcohol? A lot of calories that you're no longer putting in your body.

Be Desirable: Piety, Security, and Leadership

For men, make yourself so desirable that women want to be with you. What does desirable look like? It doesn't mean you have to look like a supermodel or an actor. Women want piety in a man. They want someone that will say, "You know what? Let's go to church together. Let's not just go to some degenerate environment."

One of the things that women want more than anything else is the confidence and the security that when life gets difficult and when life starts falling apart, that man will lead them towards security and stability. Because deep down, women have a very well-built and finely tuned God-given instinct that they'll be able to tell in a man when the bullets start firing: is this guy going to protect me and protect my kids and is he going to provide, or is he going to run for the hills? And for you as the man, you need to be able to demonstrate that.

Practical Dating Advice: Pay for the First Date

Let me give you some practical advice. Men, if you go on a first date with a woman and you split the check, we got serious problems. I don't care if you have to go into debt, refinance your home, or scrub the dishes for three weeks. You do not allow a woman to pay on the first date. Period.

"Oh, Charlie, I don't have the money." Figure it out. Get a job. Borrow money. Take out a loan on a credit card. I don't care. If you don't have $41 to cover her meal, what is more important? The money in your pocket or the character in your heart?
