Charlie Kirk on College Campuses, Institutional Trust, and Building a Movement Without a Degree

Charlie Kirk sits down to discuss his work on college campuses across America, why he takes pride in not having a four-year degree, and how the biggest political divide in the country is no longer left versus right but high trust versus low trust in institutions. Kirk explains why most Americans don't have college degrees, how higher education has become a weaponized complaint seminar, and what artificial intelligence means for the future of four-year universities.

California Visit and Campus Tour

Charlie Kirk describes California as his favorite state in the Union, arriving fresh from a large event at USC. The host shares how his 13-year-old son was so excited about Kirk's visit that he woke up at 6 AM hoping to attend, demonstrating the influence Kirk has built with younger audiences.

Kirk's college campus tour has become a hallmark of his work, where he opens the floor to any question with an "ask me anything" format. This approach has allowed him to engage directly with students and challenge prevailing viewpoints on campuses across the country.

Pride in Not Having a Four-Year Degree

Kirk makes clear that his lack of a four-year college degree is a point of pride because he represents the majority of Americans. He points out that most of the country does not have a college degree, yet the credentialed class has become snobbish toward the muscular class of workers who kept the country running during COVID-19.

As an entrepreneur, Kirk explains he tried to build something rather than just seek a credential. He notes there are currently 11 million open jobs in America that do not require a college degree, highlighting opportunities beyond traditional higher education paths.

The New Divide: Trust in Institutions

According to Kirk, the biggest divide in America is not right versus left but whether people generally trust institutions or don't trust them. This divide has largely inverted over the last 20 years, with the right now being low trust of institutions while the left maintains high trust.

Kirk cites several examples of this shift:

  • Conservatives challenge the COVID vaccine
  • Conservatives believe public health authorities may have lied during COVID
  • Conservatives don't necessarily believe the government regarding continued funding to Ukraine

This value system of high institutional trust, Kirk argues, is reinforced on college campuses.

The Problems With Modern Higher Education

When asked if he's advocating for the end of higher education, Kirk clarifies he's not against the pursuit of learning. His critique is that many schools are no longer pursuing what is good, true, and beautiful. Instead, they've become what he calls "the oppression Olympics and a weaponized complaint seminar" where students sit in circles to determine who's been offended the most that day.

Kirk argues this creates a very weak political movement because these students have never had to build the muscle mass needed for a difficult and unpredictable world. In contrast, conservatives are insulted all the time, which makes them tougher.

For conservative students on campus, Kirk explains they face a choice: either stop fighting for what they believe in or become really tough. Those who choose to stand firm develop the muscle that allows them to shoulder heavier burdens later in life. Students may be graded differently because of their views and are definitely in the ideological minority, creating an environment that either breaks them or makes them stronger.

Artificial Intelligence and the Future

Looking ahead, Kirk predicts that artificial intelligence will change everything in the next 10 years, and he questions what four-year degrees are actually doing to prepare students for that reality.

The College Statistics Debate

When confronted with statistics showing college graduates earn millions more in lifetime earnings, are more likely to get married, less likely to get divorced, more civically engaged, and have longer lifespans, Kirk doesn't dispute the numbers. Instead, he provides important context:

  • The national graduation rate means 41% of students drop out
  • Half of the kids who graduate college won't even use their degree for affiliated jobs
  • About 10% of kids who go to college stretch out the averages to be really high

Kirk illustrates this point with examples: someone who goes to Caltech to study Computer Engineering and applied AI is "crushing it," while someone who goes to study obscure liberal arts subjects faces a very different economic reality. His point is that while high earners make college look beneficial on average, the reality for many graduates is quite different.

Kirk also emphasizes that taxpayers shouldn't have to fund degrees that don't lead to productive outcomes, though he acknowledges individuals are increasingly funding their own education.

Organizing a Different Point of View

The conversation concludes with recognition of Kirk's ability to organize and present a different point of view on college campuses. His presence on platforms like TikTok has clearly resonated with younger audiences, as evidenced by the host's 13-year-old son's enthusiasm. Kirk mentions his upcoming Turning Point event, the Student Action Summit in Tampa, Florida.
