Charlie Kirk on the Sabbath Commandment: How Taking One Day Off Could Transform Your Mental Health

Charlie Kirk shares his conviction about observing the Sabbath from Friday night to Saturday night as one of the Ten Commandments. He argues that this ancient practice predates Mosaic law, originating when God rested after creation. Kirk believes if every young person took a legitimate Sabbath, anxiety and depression would decrease while meaningful relationships would flourish. During his Sabbath, Kirk remains unreachable, dedicating time to scripture, prayer, meditation, writing notes to God, and restorative activities like working out and walking. He describes the Sabbath as a gift that offers tangible benefits for modern life.

The Sabbath as a Divine Command

Charlie Kirk emphasizes the significance of the Sabbath, noting its prominent place among the Ten Commandments. He acknowledges theological debates surrounding whether believers are bound to observe it, pointing out a compelling argument: the Sabbath predated the Mosaic law itself. God rested after creation, establishing a pattern before any formal religious requirements were given to humanity.

The scriptural instruction is clear, Kirk notes: "For six days you shall work, on the seventh day you shall rest." This divine rhythm of work and rest wasn't merely a suggestion but a commandment important enough to be included among the fundamental moral laws.

A Prescription for Modern Mental Health

Kirk makes a bold claim about the potential mental health benefits of Sabbath observance for young people. He guarantees that if every young person took a legitimate Sabbath from Friday night to Saturday night, anxiety would decrease and depression would go down. This isn't just spiritual advice—it's a practical solution to the mental health crisis affecting today's youth.

The benefits extend beyond individual wellness. Kirk believes meaningful conversations would happen and young people would actually spend time with people they care about. In an age of digital distraction and shallow connections, the Sabbath creates space for genuine human connection.

What Sabbath Looks Like in Practice

For Kirk, Sabbath observance from Friday night to Saturday night means complete disconnection from work demands. No one can reach him during this sacred time. This boundary isn't about being unavailable—it's about being fully present to what matters most.

Kirk's Sabbath practices include:

  • Reading scripture
  • Resting intentionally
  • Writing notes to God
  • Prayer and meditation on God's word
  • Working out
  • Going for walks

These restorative activities create a rhythm that rejuvenates both body and spirit. The emphasis is on activities that restore rather than deplete, that connect rather than isolate.

The Sabbath as Gift

Kirk describes the Sabbath as "a gift to us"—something that can actually benefit our lives in tangible ways. This reframing is important: the Sabbath isn't a burdensome religious obligation but a divine provision for human flourishing. It's something we have been given, not something imposed upon us.

This perspective transforms how people approach the commandment. Rather than viewing it as restrictive, Kirk encourages people to see it as liberating—a weekly opportunity to step off the treadmill of constant productivity and remember what truly matters.

Sharing the Message

Kirk regularly shares this message with others, convinced of its transformative potential. His upcoming participation in a panel entitled "Remember" at the Wisdom Pearls Conference demonstrates his commitment to spreading this ancient wisdom to modern audiences. The conference, held at Dream City Church in Phoenix, Arizona from March 27th to 29th, 2025, focuses on faith-based health—a fitting context for discussing how spiritual practices like Sabbath observance contribute to overall wellbeing.
