Charlie Kirk on Trump's Plan to Dismantle the Department of Education and Restore Local Control

March 11, 2025

Charlie Kirk celebrates President Trump's commitment to dismantling the federal Department of Education, calling it potentially one of his greatest accomplishments. In a sitdown interview with Maria Bartiromo, Trump reiterated his plan to return educational control to the states, ending what Kirk describes as a failed Prussian model of centralized, technocratic education. Kirk argues that America's founding fathers were classically educated through local communities studying ancient texts, the Bible, and great Western thinkers, not through a Washington DC bureaucracy. With 7.5 million of the 11 million education workers being non-teaching bureaucrats, Kirk contends the current top-down system has bloated budgets, lowered standards, and produced graduates who can't read or write despite receiving honors.

Trump Commits to Ending the Department of Education

In President Trump's sitdown interview with Maria Bartiromo, he discussed one of Charlie Kirk's favorite topics: dismantling the federal Department of Education. Kirk argues that if President Trump is even half successful in getting this done, it will be one of his greatest accomplishments.

"There never should have been a federal centralized Washington DC based Department of Education," Kirk states emphatically. "Never should have been there. Never should have been a Department of Education that is a pulpit Bureau controlling what your kids learn, interfering with what education should be."

The True Purpose of Education

Kirk explains that education properly understood is the pursuit of the good, true, and beautiful. Teachers should be gardeners allowing kids to grow into what they actually are, not carpenters trying to cut them into something that the administrative state wants. The Prussian German model of education has failed this country, he argues.

"You see, the German model of education is hyper centralized, technocratic—we're going to give you nothing but skills," Kirk explains. "Our founding fathers were educated classically. Our founding fathers were educated with local communities studying the ancient texts. Our Founders understood their Aristotle, Socrates, Plato, Montesquieu. Our founding fathers understood the great thinkers that eventually built Western Civilization."

Education Must Be Bottom-Up, Not Top-Down

Education definitionally must be bottom-up, not top-down, Kirk insists. Many of the founding fathers were even sent abroad to learn at the greatest universities on the planet, but education then was not what it is today. It was about the Socratic exploration towards truth.

"Every founding father was classically Christian educated, and boy, did they know their Bible," Kirk says. "They knew the roots, they knew the Torah, they knew the story of the Exodus, they knew Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, they knew Romans and they knew First and Second Corinthians."

Kirk emphasizes that we can celebrate America, but if we don't understand that how we educated our founding fathers is one of the reasons why we have such a great country, then we are failing. This is one of the main reasons Kirk partners with Hillsdale College.

The Bloat of the Current System

The current top-down model has bloated budgets and too many bureaucrats. Dr. Larry Arnn from Hillsdale College came on Kirk's show and gave a breathtaking number: there are about 11 million people that work in education in this country, and about 7.5 million of the 11 million are not even teachers. They're paper pushers, administrative bureaucrats—they are the bloat.

President Trump continued his call for the dismantling, destruction, and end of the pernicious Department of Education in his interview with Bartiromo.

Trump's Vision: Returning Control to the States

"We want to bring the schools back to the States because we have the worst, literally we have the worst education department and education in the world," Trump stated. "We're ranked at the bottom of the list, and yet we're number one when it comes to cost per pupil. We want to not only have school choice, which is important, but we want to bring it back to the states so the states can run the schools and they will be every bit as good as the top educational departments anywhere in the world."

This means more money for states, Kirk notes. But just look at this empirically: the more we have gotten away from a parent-based, family-based, citizen-based, student-based learning model, the more our standards have decreased.

The Failure of American Education Standards

The standards of American education are lackluster. America ranks approximately 27th in the industrialized world. Kirk shares a shocking true story from CNN about a young woman named Alicia Ortiz who got honors from her high school—she was part of the Honor Society—and she could not read or write. She's now suing her school.

"She graduated high school with honors, but she can't read or write," Kirk explains, citing the CNN story. "That is the Department of Education. She cannot read or write but she's an honor student—the product of the Department of Education."

What we are getting out is not just the lowering of standards but the downfall of our great nation, Kirk warns. Alicia Ortiz is 19 years old, was accepted into the University of Connecticut, and she can't read or write.

The Case Against Federal Control

"The more that we centralize anything that should be personal, the quality will decrease," Kirk argues. "The federal government has no role in the education of our children, and if you believe it does, then you are a statist."

Kirk shares examples from campus tours showing students and even professors lacking basic knowledge. One student at the University of Florida didn't understand that Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) workers are volunteers working for free. Another clip shows a World War I professor who doesn't know very basic information about Winston Churchill.

Trump's Plan: The DOGE Dividend

Kirk explains Trump's plan for what he calls the "DOGE dividend"—when the government saves money by cutting wasteful spending (like $40 million on improving the social and economic inclusion of sedentary migrants, $520 million on ESG consulting, or $47 million on learning outcomes in Asia), President Trump's plan is to send every single person a $5,000 check to get the money back in their pockets.

"It's the largest and most ambitious taxpayer refund plan in the history of the country," Kirk says.

The End of an Era in Washington DC

In other news from Washington DC, the imperial capital, Black Lives Matter Plaza is no more. It is being removed. The DC Department of Transportation has begun working on what is currently the BLM Plaza in Washington DC.

Kirk mentions he might go by to do a video commemoration for the end of an era—the end of the awokening of the country. The two-block-long mural was painted at the height of what Kirk calls "Floydapalooza" just to virtue signal outside of the White House. "Get rid of it," Kirk says.

[03:40] can you tell us anything about the

[03:50] we have the worst literally we have the

[03:55] in the world we're ranked at the bottom

[04:18] but just look at this

[04:19] empirically the more we have gotten away

[04:27] model the more that our standards have

[04:30] decreased the standards of American

[04:33] Education are

[04:37] lackluster we are like 27th in the

[04:40] industrialized World there is a it's a

[04:43] true story can you guys resend that

[04:46] story that I thought was a parody

[04:48] there's a young

[04:50] woman who got honors from her high

[04:53] school I think I'm getting this right

[04:56] she was part of the Honor Society and

[04:58] she could not read or write so she's

[05:00] suing her

[05:02] school it's a it's a real

[05:04] story she's suing her

[05:07] school because they gave her honors but

[05:11] she cannot read or

[05:13] write you go to almost this is it she

[05:17] graduated high school with honors it's a

[05:20] true story CNN.com she graduated high

[05:23] school with honors but she can't read or

[05:26] right now she's suing

[05:30] that is the Department of Education she

[05:32] cannot read or write but she's an honor

[05:36] student the product of the Department of

[05:40] Education what we are getting out

[05:46] is not just the lowering of

[05:52] Standards but it is the downfall of our

[05:54] great nation it's it's a true it's a CNN

[05:56] story Alicia Ortiz is 19 years old fresh

[05:59] at the University of Connecticut and she

[06:01] can't read or right she was accepted

[06:03] into the University of Connecticut

[06:04] without being able to read or right Ju

[06:06] Just Another little addendum on the

[06:10] education problem in this

[06:14] country the more that we centralize

[06:17] anything that should be personal the

[06:19] quality will

[06:23] decrease the federal government has no

[06:26] role in the education of our children

[06:30] and if you believe it does then you are

[06:32] a

[06:35] statist this isn't this is a young man

[06:37] who's in college let's play this year

[06:38] from our campus tour this is a young man

[06:40] as long there's no swear words in

[06:42] this this is your average college

[06:46] student I believe let me see here what

[06:48] shirt am I wearing the University of

[06:51] Florida and I'm not here to knock on

[06:52] University of Florida but some people in

[06:54] this audience think it's a good

[06:56] school not only is this guy not very

[07:00] wise or smart the more important clip is

[07:02] the

[07:04] professor

[07:07] who doesn't even know very basic

[07:09] information about Winston Churchill even

[07:11] though he was a World War I Professor

[07:12] let's play Cut

[07:13] 36 so my real thing is how is Doge not a

[07:18] pyramid scheme when it's essentially

[07:21] being a department that is being hiring

[07:23] federal workers to take money away from

[07:25] other federal workers which is thus

[07:27] creating a strain on the Social Security

[07:30] you do know the workers for Doge are

[07:32] working for free right no they're not

[07:35] yeah they are okay they're all

[07:37] volunteers okay bid all right and and do

[07:39] you know do you know about the Doge

[07:41] dividend yeah you can you can tell the

[07:43] crowd though you're more wel tell me

[07:45] about the Doge

[07:46] dividend I'm waiting for you to finish

[07:48] your part

[07:50] sir so so for example when uh when we

[07:54] say 40 million bucks on improving the

[07:57] social and economic inclusion of

[07:58] sedentary migrants $520 million on ESG

[08:02] Consulting $47 million on learning

[08:04] outcomes in Asia president Trump's plan

[08:07] is to send every single person in this

[08:09] audience a $5,000 check get the money

[08:12] back in your pocket yeah that's a bunch

[08:13] of

[08:14] hoopla well that's the plan we'll see

[08:16] you see the money is actually not a PID

[08:19] scheme it's the largest and most

[08:21] ambitious taxpayer refund plan in the

[08:24] history of the

[08:27] country that is your average college

[08:30] student also in other news here in

[08:33] Washington DC the imperial capital black

[08:36] lives matter Plaza is no more it is

[08:39] being removed DC to begin

[08:42] reconstructing the black lives matter

[08:45] Plaza Crews from the District of the

[08:46] Department of Transportation have begun

[08:48] working on what is currently the BLM

[08:50] Plaza in Washington DC it is gone in

[08:53] fact I might go by it's just a couple

[08:55] blocks from here I might go by and do a

[08:57] a video little

[08:59] commemoration for the end of an era the

[09:02] end of the awokening of the country

[09:05] might go by

[09:07] and kind of say hello it's a two block

[09:10] long mural in fact there's a bunch of

[09:12] media there I bet they're going to go

[09:13] try and ask me questions what are you a

[09:14] racist no I actually don't think that we

[09:17] should have an entire two block long

[09:19] mural which by the way was painted at

[09:21] the height of Floyd of

[09:23] palooza just a virtue signal outside of

[09:25] the White House get rid of it right next

[09:27] to the white get rid of it
