Larry Arnn and Hillsdale's Influence on Charlie Kirk's Classical Education Advocacy
Showing 23 Classical Education videos from Charlie Kirk's video collection.
Classical education found its clearest advocate in Charlie Kirk's relationship with Hillsdale College president Larry Arnn, who described first meeting Kirk by challenging him with questions he couldn't answer and then telling him directly that growth required suffering, study, and returning to foundational texts: the Bible, the classics, and America's founding documents. Kirk took the advice literally, completing 31 separate Hillsdale online courses over the following years and staying in regular personal contact with Arnn, a relationship Arnn described as unusual among the young people he had mentored specifically because Kirk was the only one who never attended college as a full-time student while still pursuing that level of self-directed classical study. Kirk traced his own educational philosophy back further still, to Christian Heritage Academy under Dr. Hutz Herzberg, who later became head of Turning Point Academy, describing his decision there to accept Christianity in fifth grade as inseparable from the classical educational foundation that shaped his adult intellectual habits. He extended classical education's framework into his own preaching as well, delivering a message on five modern belief systems he argued operate as false religions competing with Christianity, using the same close-textual-reading approach Arnn had modeled to argue that cultural decline stemmed from abandoning classical and biblical literacy rather than simply losing political battles.
