Charlie Kirk on Trump's Tariff Power, Kash Patel's FBI Nomination, and Biden's Hunter Pardon

What seemed like a quiet Thanksgiving weekend turned into a series of seismic political developments. Charlie Kirk examines President Trump's successful tariff threats that brought Justin Trudeau to Mar-a-Lago on bended knee, the nomination of Kash Patel to lead the FBI, and Joe Biden's blanket pardon of Hunter Biden covering activities dating back to 2014. Kirk argues Trump accomplished more with one phone call than any bipartisan border bill could achieve, while Biden's pardon, despite repeated promises not to, opens the door for Trump to issue mass pardons to January 6 defendants. From Mark Zuckerberg's meeting to the exposure of institutional lying, Kirk contends American power is being restored.

A Weekend That Changed Everything

What appeared to be a sleepy Thanksgiving weekend turned into a series of explosive political developments. The expectation was simple: President Trump doing the YMCA dance at Mar-a-Lago, nothing particularly groundbreaking. Instead, the nation witnessed a rapid succession of power moves that signal a dramatic shift in American politics.

It started Wednesday evening when President Trump met with Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook (Meta). Then on Friday, Trump had dinner with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. All of this centered around Trump's tariff threats against Mexico, Canada, and China. The tariff strategy worked so effectively that Trudeau boarded his plane the day after Thanksgiving to come down and essentially beg President Trump not to wreck the Canadian economy.

One Phone Call Versus Billion-Dollar Bills

The border crisis provides a telling contrast. Democrats repeatedly insisted that solving the border required a bipartisan border bill, specifically referencing James Lankford's proposal. They claimed a bipartisan consensus was essential. President Trump demonstrated otherwise: just one phone call, one Truth Social post, and he was able to allocate more resources and achieve more results than any bipartisan border bill possibly would have. This feels like American power is finally being restored to the world.

Kash Patel Nominated to Lead the FBI

On Saturday evening, President Trump sent another shockwave through the system. With an already impressive team including Pete Hegseth, Pam Bondi, Tulsi Gabbard, Bobby Kennedy, Elon Musk, and Vivek Ramaswamy, there remained one open slot: who would control the FBI?

The FBI's history is worth understanding. It wasn't actually chartered by Congress under that name until 1935. In 1908, Attorney General Charles Bonaparte created the Bureau of Investigation (BOI), an investigative force within the Department of Justice. Bonaparte hired 34 people, including some former Secret Service members, to work for the agency. Congress gave it its current name, the FBI, in 1935. The FBI is part of the Department of Justice, not an independent agency outlined in the Constitution. Its authority comes from congressional statutes, executive orders, and the Code of Federal Regulations.

President Trump sent another shockwave by nominating Kash Patel to lead the FBI.

Biden's Blanket Pardon for Hunter

The biggest news came last night: despite repeated proclamations, statements, and promises that he would not do this, Joe Biden gave a blanket pardon to his son Hunter Biden. This wasn't just a pardon for the crimes he was convicted of—it was a blanket pardon going all the way back to 2014. Interestingly, this now covers all of the Ukrainian and Chinese Communist Party activities that the Biden family was involved in.

This development comes as other left-wing billionaires like Reid Hoffman talk about fleeing the country. If these people did nothing wrong, why are they so worried about the government coming after them?

From a fatherly standpoint, a father should look after his son—family does come first. But from the presidential standpoint, this is much more about the corruption, lying, and deception of President Joe Biden. All along, Biden should have just said he would look very closely at it and if his son was mistreated, he would pardon him. Instead, Biden promised the American people this would not happen, repeatedly stating that no one is above the law.

The Pattern of Institutional Lies

In May, Biden was asked directly if he had ruled out a pardon for his son. He responded: "Yes." He said he would abide by the jury decision and would not pardon Hunter. Biden repeatedly stated that "this nation was founded on the principle there are no Kings in America. Each of us is equal before the law. No one is above the law."

Breaking news later revealed that the president had discussed pardoning Hunter Biden with some of his closest aides at least since Hunter's conviction in June. They decided at the time that he'd publicly say he would not pardon him, even though it remained on the table. Basically, they decided to lie.

This is the same group of people who told you the vaccine was safe and effective, that you needed six feet of social distancing, that early treatments like ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine were horse paste that would kill you, that the virus came from some wet market in Wuhan, that Vladimir Putin was going to march through Europe, and that Ukraine is vital to American national security. The reason Trump won is because Americans don't trust any of these people anymore.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had been asked multiple times about a potential pardon. Her answer was always that "the president believes no one is above the law" and that their answer stood: no pardon would happen. They lied about it repeatedly.

Opening the Door for Trump Pardons

Biden's statement defending his decision read in part: "There has been an effort to break Hunter, who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution. In trying to break Hunter, they've tried to break me, and there's no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough."

Shortly after, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social: "Does the pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J6 hostages who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of justice!" The media had to read his Truth Social post word for word—you can tell they hate having to do it.

This development opens the door and moves the Overton window for President Trump to get very aggressive on pardons from day one. While he didn't necessarily need that signal, the January 6 defendants need full pardons, especially the nonviolent ones. Consider people like those who just took a step into the Capitol and faced federal prison time, or the praying grandmothers who went on Capitol grounds.

Not only should pardons be issued, but every active investigation surrounding January 6 needs to be dropped—every single one. Additionally, one thing that should be investigated is how many federal agents were there on January 6, and who planted the pipe bombs? Can we get a pipe bomb investigative czar? While special counsels aren't ideal, can we put someone on this? The pipe bombs at the DNC and RNC—where Kamala Harris almost died—represent an actual threat to democracy. Imagine if those buildings had blown up on January 6. Who planted those bombs? Why has no one been arrested? Why don't we have the cell phone pings to identify the perpetrator?

Where Is Adam Schiff Now?

Back in 2018, Adam Schiff introduced a bill to keep Trump from abusing pardon powers for his family. Where is the new California senator now? His proposed legislation stated that if the president pardons anyone in an investigation in which the president is a witness, subject, or target, those investigative files would all be turned over to Congress. Schiff argued Congress ought to know whether the president is using the pardon power to obstruct justice, and that the American people have a right to know. He called for transparency—at the very least, transparency.

For historical context, this isn't the first family presidential pardon in American history. Bill Clinton pardoned his half-brother. However, the immediate father-son dynamic remains particularly notable.

Trump's Day One Mandate

President Trump has a mandate on day one to issue mass pardons and commutations across the board. If you read Joe Biden's description of why he pardoned Hunter, he says that no one really trusts the Department of Justice anymore. Interesting observation, considering Biden's Department of Justice went after Donald Trump to try to throw him in prison for 700 years, all while Biden went around saying that nobody is above the law.

A father has to look after his son—that's understandable. You can't fault a father for looking after his son. It doesn't inspire the same level of outrage on the actual action itself. However, you can fault a president for desecrating the office of the presidency. Both things can be mutually true. Hunter Biden is a stone-cold criminal, it's a bad look, and it smells of corruption—but family loyalty is also a real thing.

The bigger picture is the pattern of deception, the institutional lying, and the double standards that have characterized this administration. American power appears to be returning, and the Trump team is assembling to restore it fully.
