Charlie Kirk Recalls Playing on All-White Serbian Basketball Team Called the White Eagles

Categories: Liberal Opinions
February 18, 2022

Charlie Kirk shares a bizarre story about playing on an all-white Serbian basketball team in Illinois called the White Eagles, claiming it demonstrates racial harmony when teams segregated by race would play each other. The discussion begins with praise for Novak Djokovic and Kyrie Irving's vaccine stances before veering into this tangential anecdote about AAU basketball, Serbian communities in Chicago, and his claims that racially separated teams "got along" and "never thought anything of it." Critics question the message and point out the White Eagles name's connection to Serbian paramilitary groups convicted of war crimes.

From Vaccine Skepticism to Basketball Nostalgia

Charlie Kirk opens his commentary by praising athletes who refused COVID-19 vaccines, specifically highlighting Novak Djokovic and Kyrie Irving. Kirk discusses Djokovic's statement about potentially sacrificing being the greatest tennis player for his stance against vaccination, though Kirk questions whether Djokovic truly surpasses Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal in tennis greatness.

From this starting point, Kirk transitions into an unexpected discussion about his personal connection to the Serbian community in Chicago and his experience playing on a Serbian basketball team.

The Illinois White Eagles Basketball Team

Kirk recounts playing on a basketball team in Illinois composed entirely of Serbian players, with himself as the apparent exception. The team was called the Illinois White Eagles, a name Kirk notes "you couldn't call a team that anymore." He adopted the Serbian name "Sheva Kurkivich" while playing on the team.

Kirk describes how he "looked the part" and could "pull off a Croatian, Bosnian-Albanian, Serbian kind of deal," allowing him to fit in with the Serbian community despite not being Serbian himself. He traveled with this team across the country playing competitive AAU basketball in areas including Waukegan, Zion Benton, and Elgin.

All-White Teams Versus All-Black Teams

The central point of Kirk's story involves his team, which he emphasizes was "all white," regularly playing against "all black teams." Kirk claims these matchups were completely cordial and that "no one cared" about the racial composition of the teams. He states: "It was never like this racial thing. We all got along and we all like hung out."

Kirk insists that despite having an all-white team playing against all-black teams, "we never thought anything of it" and there was "never a moment ever" where racial tensions arose. He describes players from both teams knowing each other and socializing, with the Serbian players coming from their tight-knit community.

The Message and the Criticism

Kirk appears to use this anecdote to suggest that racial separation in sports can coexist with racial harmony, claiming his experience demonstrates that people of different races can get along even when organized into racially homogeneous groups. Critics responding to the clip expressed confusion about the connection between his praise for vaccine-hesitant athletes and this basketball story.

One critic noted that Kirk, despite being in his late twenties, speaks "like he's a 60 year old who was playing basketball at a segregated high school back in like the 50s." Others compared his narrative unfavorably to movies like "Remember the Titans" and "Glory Road," which celebrate racial integration in sports rather than separation.

The White Eagles Name Controversy

Critics also pointed out that the White Eagles name carries significant historical baggage beyond what Kirk acknowledged. The White Eagles were a Serbian paramilitary group associated with the Serbian National Renewal and the Serbian Radical Party during the Croatian and Bosnian wars of the 1990s.

According to testimony at the International War Crimes Tribunal, the White Eagles were responsible for numerous atrocities including multiple massacres. Various members of the White Eagles paramilitary group were indicted by the tribunal, with some receiving sentences including life imprisonment for crimes against men, women, and children.

Whether Kirk's childhood basketball team had any intentional connection to this paramilitary group remains unclear from his comments, though he does note the team name would not be acceptable today.

[00:00] charlie kirk

[00:01] is talking about sports um

[00:04] but only in the context of vaccine

[00:08] denialism novak djokovic she did an

[00:10] interview the other day where he said

[00:12] that he'd give up being the greatest

[00:14] tennis player ever for his righteous

[00:17] cause of not taking the coven vaccine

[00:19] that's been administered billions of

[00:21] times at this point i mean no offense to

[00:22] tennis but we'll be okay yeah

[00:25] right and uh come on i used to watch a

[00:27] little bit of tennis in my day

[00:30] he's not greater than roger federer or

[00:32] rafael nadal it's like it's like leaders

[00:34] of isis they'll be a new greatest tennis

[00:36] player right um and

[00:38] and perhaps we could also just say

[00:41] serena williams

[00:42] with that said here he is uh

[00:46] with his musings on

[00:49] a all-white basketball team i don't even

[00:51] know how he makes this transition but

[00:52] here we go

[00:54] but in order to push back against much

[00:57] of this a lot of this nonsense

[00:59] it's going to take courageous truth

[01:01] tellers and honestly someone that i have

[01:02] not spent i don't think any time on this

[01:03] program talking about

[01:05] but i have a great deal of respect for

[01:07] the kyrie irvings of the world

[01:09] and the novak choices of the world

[01:12] now i grew up with a lot of serbs in

[01:14] chicago i have a soft spot for serbs

[01:15] they're awesome i know the worst thing

[01:17] you could say in the serbian language

[01:18] and i will not say it on air because the

[01:20] fcc would find some way to still find me

[01:23] i played on the serbian basketball team

[01:24] actually my name was sheva kurkivich

[01:27] i could you not have a

[01:29] jersey that says

[01:31] the name of our basketball team was the

[01:33] illinois white eagles boy you couldn't

[01:35] call it team that anymore we were all

[01:36] white

[01:40] and we meant nothing racial about it of

[01:41] course not because we actually lived in

[01:43] america that was awesome we used to play

[01:44] all black basketball teams and we used

[01:46] to get along i kid you not

[01:48] we were all wow

[01:50] every everyone else was serbian except

[01:51] me but i kind of looked apart a little

[01:52] bit and kind of look a little bit like

[01:54] i'm from the balkan peninsula i could

[01:56] pull off a croatian bosnian-albanian

[01:58] serbian kind of deal and you would

[02:00] basketball aau which is really

[02:02] competitive basketball like waukegan or

[02:04] zion benton and elgin we travel all

[02:07] across the country

[02:09] and we'd play these all black teams and

[02:11] no one cared it was never like this

[02:12] racial thing no it was like we all got

[02:14] along and we all like hung out it would

[02:16] be like all white team versus all black

[02:18] team and we never thought anything of it

[02:20] i could you not there was never a moment

[02:22] ever and this is a little bit of a

[02:24] detour yeah all of a sudden we're going

[02:25] to see them in the locker room yeah we

[02:27] just kind of all know each other and

[02:28] they all know each other from like a

[02:29] serbian community it's kind of cool and

[02:31] who's that so you're okay so so

[02:33] basically his his argument is that they

[02:36] were cordial to one another so i don't

[02:38] know how he got there from saying i

[02:39] admire novak djokovic uh and and which

[02:43] he mispronounced and kyrie irving for

[02:45] their for their vaccine stances and then

[02:47] he goes on some diatribe where he says

[02:49] and i quote i have a soft spot for serbs

[02:52] which is a normal way to view human

[02:54] beings yeah

[02:55] go ahead brother okay it's also just

[02:57] weird because he's like 28 years old and

[02:59] he speaks like he's a 60 year old who

[03:01] was like playing basketball at a

[03:03] segregated high school back in like the

[03:05] 50s or whatever

[03:07] and like it's just like this glory road

[03:09] and he thinks that that's like his life

[03:11] basically

[03:12] he's gonna like he's gonna like recount

[03:13] the plot of the movie pride with uh

[03:16] terence howard yeah

[03:18] well they can't they don't allow like

[03:19] black people to swim

[03:20] so you know but he had an all-white slim

[03:22] team i imagine

[03:23] it's it's just weird that i think this

[03:25] like this level of like under 30 or like

[03:28] millennial like right-wing content

[03:29] creators are very weird because all of

[03:31] their stories just sound incredibly fake

[03:33] because they're just like you know back

[03:34] in my day it's like your day

[03:36] we had a we had an old white basketball

[03:38] team that usually happens in shows like

[03:40] riverdale

[03:41] how are his politics

[03:43] worse than remember the titans yeah it's

[03:46] like

[03:47] yeah it's the opposite message of

[03:48] remember the titans just look at how

[03:50] much happier people are when they have

[03:51] an ethnic based uh sports team and they

[03:54] don't even think about it and that's

[03:55] like the most like you know everybody in

[03:57] that movie thing everybody in today's

[03:59] america is like that is so heartwarming

[04:01] basically unless you're cynical about it

[04:03] like me but that so he's

[04:05] he's his politics are be behind that

[04:08] yeah also just uh the white eagles uh in

[04:11] quotations uh paramilitary this is a

[04:12] wikipedia entry the white eagles also

[04:14] known as the avengers were a serbian

[04:16] paramilitary group associated with the

[04:17] serbian national renewal and the serbian

[04:19] radical party yeah just skipping a

[04:21] little bit head down testimony at the

[04:23] international war crimes tribunal

[04:25] indicates that the white eagles are

[04:26] responsible for a number of atrocities

[04:27] including the croatian about during the

[04:29] croatian bosnian wars including the

[04:31] washing massacre visiguard massage

[04:33] crimes and i don't know how to pronounce

[04:35] all these but focha gecko and others

[04:36] various members of the white eagles were

[04:38] indicted by the tribunal mitar vessel

[04:40] vasiljovich

[04:42] received a 15-year sentence former head

[04:44] milan lukic received a life sentence for

[04:47] his war crimes which include murdering

[04:49] men women and children ah

[04:52] can't name teams like that anymore

[04:53] though yeah

[04:55] back in my day your serbian chicago

[04:57] basketball team after a group that's uh

[05:00] uh on the other side of the world um

[05:02] during war crimes why can't he decide if

[05:04] he's gonna be

[05:06] 19 or if he's going to be 86

[05:10] um that's a it's a weird thing with kirk

[05:12] because he's like canceled sports before

[05:14] like the kaepernick thing

[05:15] basically like

[05:17] he's not he's a guy that doesn't like

[05:18] sports he's like stephen crowder right

[05:20] but that

[05:21] goes against masculinity right yeah

[05:24] you're not supposed to not know anything

[05:25] about like what sport magic johnson

[05:27] played if you're a man and uh and that's

[05:30] the problem kirk has so i think he's

[05:31] like in a rush to sort of like

[05:34] have sports takes um you know he was in

[05:36] that uh supplement commercial throwing a

[05:38] football around uh i do remember that

[05:41] but yeah i don't know i don't think he

[05:42] can name like five athletes

[05:46] i i i'm desperately looking up i'm

[05:48] looking for photos

[05:50] i'm honestly so confused by that clip i

[05:52] mean i don't even with the tangents he

[05:54] went on i still don't understand what

[05:56] his point was uh

[05:58] because it weaved in three different

[06:00] like

[06:01] half of points i don't i i just

[06:05] yeah that's all i have to do

[06:06] i mean it's like a roar

[06:09] just bizarre

[06:11] i love a good tangent but i was going to

[06:12] say i'm desperately searching for a

[06:14] photo of this basketball team

[06:16] i

[06:17] i have got to find this
