Charlie Kirk Reveals How Satan Penetrates Your Mind and How to Fight Back

Charlie Kirk delivers a powerful message about spiritual warfare, explaining the three ways Satan gains access to our minds and how Christians can fight back. Speaking to a church congregation, Kirk breaks down the biblical framework for understanding how the enemy operates through vows, environment, and unrepented sin. He offers practical guidance on achieving a sound mind through prayer, scripture, and submission to God, while emphasizing that victory is already promised. Kirk challenges believers to move from defense to offense, taking terrain from the enemy rather than simply surviving the battle.

Understanding the Battle for Your Mind

The scriptures promise believers a sound mind, but many Christians unknowingly create entry points for Satan to attack their consciousness. Sometimes believers construct the very on-ramps that allow the enemy direct access to their thoughts and emotions, often without realizing what they're doing.

The Bible provides clear instruction on how Satan operates. First Peter reminds believers to be alert and of sober mind, explaining that the enemy prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. The passage instructs Christians to resist him, standing firm in faith, while recognizing that believers throughout the world undergo the same kinds of sufferings. When Satan harasses you, you shouldn't feel sorry for yourself. Fellow believers may not always talk about it, but they too face harassment, negative thoughts, and constant attacks.

Three Ways Satan Gains Access to Your Mind

Satan uses three primary methods to penetrate the minds of believers, as revealed in the books of James and Matthew. Understanding these tactics is essential for spiritual defense.

Earthly Vows

The first method involves vows. Just as Satan declared "I will" five times in his rebellion, humans often make similar declarations. These earthly vows might sound like: "I'm never going to take a drink again," "I'm not going to visit this website," "I'm stronger than this," or "I'm going to stop gossiping." Believers fall short of these vows constantly, and there's a specific reason why.

As soon as someone writes that vow, Satan gains a reference point to use for harassment. He taunts with thoughts like, "You think you're so strong? You think you can endure it? I'm going to taunt you with this. You wrote right here that you're not going to go to this website. You wrote right here that you're not going to go into credit card debt." Most people fail because the way they're actually instructed to approach these issues is the exact opposite. It's not "I will, I will, I will, I will, I will." Instead, it's "Jesus did, Jesus is, and He is the chairman of the board of my life, and He will protect you at that moment."

Every person will lose on their own against Satan. Nobody has to fight this war alone. Some believers try to fight it for themselves, going to earthly means like yoga classes or various substances. But trying to use the earth to defeat the king of the earth—Satan—is a losing strategy. Instead, believers need to step out of the way, worship, and say, "Jesus, can you just take care of this, please? Can you just come in here and slay this for me and win this battle for me?" He will never forsake or abandon those who call on Him.

Self-control itself is not a personal achievement but a fruit of the Spirit. One Christian once claimed to be a master of self-control, boasting about his ability to conquer his own devices. When asked where he thought self-control came from, he struggled to see that it's a gift from the Lord, not something generated by human effort. The fruits of the Spirit include patience, goodness, kindness, and graciousness, along with self-control. These are not of our own devices but gifts from the Lord through the Spirit filling believers.

Your Environment

The second method Satan uses involves environment. He gains an on-ramp based on who people surround themselves with, the music they listen to, and what their environment looks like. Jesus proved this when He said, "If it causes you to sin, cut off your arm. Get rid of it." The instruction is to make your environment reflective of the type of worship you want to engage in.

Psychology confirms what Scripture teaches: write down the five people you spend the most time with, because that's who you are. You become the moving average of the five people you spend the most time with. Notice how you start saying one-liners like the five people you spend time with, or how you start dressing similarly.

Believers should ask themselves honest questions: Am I spending time with gossipers? Am I around people constantly trying to bring down others? Am I around people always telling half-truths, late to meetings, sending text messages that are always negative? Am I around people talking about superficial material stuff, putting points on the board about how rich they are, how fast their cars are, how many vacations they take? Or are they talking about deeper and more meaningful things? Am I around people filled with scorn, bitterness, revenge, and anger, or people filled with peace and love?

Music represents another environmental factor. For some, cutting out almost all secular music becomes necessary. While listening to secular music doesn't make someone a bad person, music serves as one of the ways to receive incantations of truth. For those in intense spiritual work, listening only to praise music and scripture music may be essential. For young people in particular, this becomes especially important.

The same principle applies to television shows, movies, comedians, and YouTube series. Every believer could identify right now at least one form of entertainment that serves as an on-ramp for Satan—something that puts them in a state of disobedience to the Lord. This doesn't mean believers can't have any fun or must shield themselves from everything at all times, but asking God for wisdom (which He gives generously according to James 1:5) helps identify what needs to be removed from life.

Unrepented Sin

The third method involves unrepented sin. Satan loves to seize on unrepented sin, especially sexual sin and sins of the flesh. Satan is the master of sins involving things you can touch and feel. He loves to hold these sins against believers, acting like the serpent in the grass, saying, "Man, your failure time and time again shows that you might as well just give it up and get drunk every single night." He wants to bring people down by making them believe how awful and terrible they are.

What's amazing is that once Jesus Christ forgives sins at that moment, He will never mention that sin again. He will never hold it against you. He will never say you are anything but His son or daughter, born into eternity. It is wiped clean. The devil isn't like that. The devil will hold a fourth-grade mistake of spilling orange juice on a friend against you. That becomes your identity, and you'll never get past it. He uses it as a means of control, as a way to keep believers in a perpetual open-air prison sentence.

Repentance appears 1,000 times in the Old Testament. The church needs to get more serious about repentance—about repenting our own sin and things done wrong. It doesn't have to be done publicly, but repentance is freeing and liberating. It closes off the on-ramps because Satan is the master of lies. Are you lying to yourself about a sin you're committing? Are you lying to yourself about a pattern you're in that you know deep down isn't good for you, but then you do the justification thing? "Yeah, I mean it's fine that I get drunk every single night. I provide for the family, so it's whatever. It's not a big deal. It's okay that I swear all the time or gossip because I'm a good person."

Are you in that moral justification range? Or can you honestly say, "God, man, I need Your mercy and Your grace. I'm not even close to where I need to be right now"? Satan doesn't like that kind of honesty. As soon as you repent, you are building a wall that makes it harder for Satan to seize your mind and capture where you are.

How to Counter the Attack

Understanding how Satan operates is only the first step. Believers need practical ways to counter these attacks and achieve the peace of mind and sound mind that Scripture promises. The goal, as demonstrated when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, is clear: "Then the devil left him." There are seasons where believers feel more at peace than others because Satan is not constant, but God is constant.

Prayer

Prayer represents the first line of defense. If believers do not get in a position of vulnerable prayer, letting the Lord capture who they are and their spirit, they will always remain bonded to the earth. The most powerful prayer in the entire Bible consists of just three words, said by one of the women Jesus healed: "Lord, help me." That's it.

Prayers must be sincere, but they do not have to be sophisticated. You don't have to write a doctoral thesis submitted to Stanford with citations and footnotes of biblical references. It just has to be "Lord, help me." That kind of sincere, broken-down prayer is exactly one of the ways believers counter this onslaught of spiritual warfare.

Know the Word of God

The second counter-strategy involves digging into the Word and knowing it. The Bible is like a USB drive waiting to be inputted and downloaded into your operating system to protect you from the ransomware and malware attacks of the enemy. It's waiting, saying "please download it." As soon as you do, you start memorizing scripture. You become filled with the Word. You start to understand the terrain on which this battle is being fought.

Submit to God and Resist the Devil

The third strategy comes from James 4:7: "Submit yourselves then to God and resist the devil and he will flee from you." Not that he will walk away, not that he'll just kind of leave—he will flee. When you flee, you're in danger. That means submission to the Lord and obedience to His commands cause Satan to flee. He runs away. Adios, Satan, have a nice day. He gets out.

Understand that you are not going to be able to do this on your own, but submission and obedience to the Lord, following His commands, activates this promise. You are going to fall short, but here's one challenge: In the next day or two, try your best (and you will fail at this) to make your sins accidental sins. Try to make your sins missteps, not deliberate, pre-planned, and purchased sins.

What does this mean? For example, if you gather your buddies together and plan, "Hey, we're going to go on a trip. We're going to visit a strip club. We're going to get really drunk," that is pre-planned sin. But if you're doing something and you have a wrong thought and you mess up, those are accidental. Those are understandable. The point is don't build those on-ramps. Try your best to be obedient to the Lord in every single capacity.

The Promise of Victory

Despite what the devil might be telling you, despite what those thoughts might be weighing down on you, believers are promised victory. This is why Satan hates the book of Revelation. He will be thrown into the lake of fire and will burn forever. That's his destiny. The harasser, the tormenter, the liar, the serpent, the mocker will be thrown into the lake of fire. That battle is over and done. Believers are simply temporary physical manifestations of that spiritual war.

The scriptures say clearly in Second Thessalonians that the Lord is faithful and He will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. John 16:33 states, "I have told you these things so that you may have peace." But then there's a part of scripture that doesn't get talked about enough: "In this world, you will have trouble. In this world, you will have trouble. In this world, you will have trouble."

Jesus is saying you're going to have trouble. If you think it's unique that you're being harassed right now by the evil one, it's not unique. He said you're going to have trouble. But then Jesus says, "But take heart. I've overcome the world." Take heart. He has overcome the current governor, mayor, and president of this earth—Satan. Jesus has overcome all of that.

Moving from Defense to Offense

Believers must not just pray, repent, and read, but must be aggressive and offensive to launch a counter-offensive against what Satan has done. Some might say this message doesn't apply to them or they don't quite get it. Maybe that's because they've already been doing all these things and walking in obedience. Or maybe they're not taking enough terrain and Satan doesn't deem them a threat.

Not every person is harassed equally. Satan has limited resources. The people harassed the most are the ones taking the most ground. If you're not being harassed, maybe you've mastered all this. Or maybe this is a reason for you to get more in the fight and go take more terrain from the enemy.

The Battle of the Bulge: A Metaphor for Spiritual Warfare

The type of counter-offensive needed can best be depicted metaphorically through a moment in World War II. World War II was one of America's greatest moments, when the nation sent hundreds of thousands of its own citizens to fight—never on American land or soil outside of Pearl Harbor—but for the betterment and good of the world and other nations.

After D-Day, Allied forces of the French, British, Canadians, and Americans were on the march, liberating French town after French town. Some churches have felt this kind of momentum—building auditoriums, winning souls for Christ. In physics terms, force equals mass times acceleration, which equals momentum. When you have mass and are moving fast, you have momentum. That's what was happening right after the Allies won on D-Day.

The bad guys—the National Socialist Worker Party—were on defense. They were losing town after town after town. In fact, it looked as if victory was inevitable. The Allies were heading into winter, and it looked like the enemy would wave the surrender flag. George Patton was so confident he went to Paris to enjoy the liberated city.

But evil hates being put on defense. The Allied forces thought they were going to enjoy Christmas. They thought they would be able to enjoy Belgium and northeast France, take a breath, and maybe not have to lose friends or loved ones. But then the most unexpected all-out counter-offensive from the enemy occurred in the Ardennes Forest, known as the Battle of the Bulge.

Outnumbered 10 to 1, the leader of the National Socialist Workers Party—who might be the closest to the devil incarnate that we can look at in the last hundred years, who executed a plan of methodical, mass, mechanized murder of certain types of people, including God's chosen people—hated being put on defense. He hated when terrain was taken. He said, "That's it. I'm going to try to take every single one of them down with me." His generals thought he was insane.

Remember, a sound mind is not a characteristic of Satan. He said, "I don't care. Go after the Ardennes. We're going to retake the port city in Belgium. We're going to turn the course of the war. They will never take Germany." American forces were put on defense, put on their heels. Many believers feel this way right now—under attack, under attack. And even though you know you're going to win, it's really awful. The Allied forces knew they were going to win. They knew victory was certain. The question wasn't whether victory was there, but why the harassment continued.

This is where believers find themselves today—knowing the outcome is secure, yet facing intense opposition. The call is not to simply survive the attack, but to move forward, taking ground, advancing the kingdom, and living in the victory that has already been won through Christ.
