Eric Metaxas on Charlie Kirk's Murder: Standing Against Evil and Choosing Light in Dark Times

Eric Metaxas addresses the shocking murder of his friend Charlie Kirk and what it reveals about the spiritual battle between good and evil facing America. Speaking from Washington DC where he addressed Concerned Women for America, Eric challenges Christians to reject despair and embrace radical faith in the face of tragedy. He draws parallels between Charlie Kirk and martyrs like Dietrich Bonhoeffer, arguing that God allows even horrific events for greater purposes. Eric confronts the reality of satanic evil, the inadequacy of worldly wisdom, and the urgent need for believers to recognize that only Jesus offers the power to stand against darkness. This is a call to worship God in all circumstances, even the most devastating ones.

Praising God in All Circumstances

Eric Metaxas opens with a challenging message about praising God even in the most horrific circumstances. The Bible commands believers to praise God in all situations, not just when things are going well, but especially when facing the worst possible events. This includes processing the recent murder of Charlie Kirk, a friend and fellow faith leader whose death has sent shockwaves through the Christian and conservative communities.

Eric acknowledges that this concept is incomprehensible to many people, especially those outside the Christian faith. Yet he emphasizes that this is precisely when faith is tested most severely. The call to praise God isn't about denying the horror of what happened or pretending evil doesn't exist, but about trusting in God's sovereignty even when circumstances seem to contradict His goodness.

The Murder of Charlie Kirk and Its Spiritual Significance

Eric describes the murder of Charlie Kirk as an act of satanic evil, not merely a tragedy or political violence. He compares the impact to the death of Princess Diana, noting that when someone young and vibrant dies, the loss feels even more acute. But Charlie's death goes beyond that because he was murdered, and he was a powerful voice for truth, goodness, and faith in Jesus Christ.

Charlie Kirk was extraordinarily gifted, Eric emphasizes, using his talents to reach millions with a message of hope, patriotism, and biblical values. His work with Turning Point USA and TPUSA Faith created a movement that engaged young people on college campuses across America. His sudden, violent death leaves a void that seems impossible to fill.

Eric will be speaking with Lucas Miles, who heads TPUSA Faith and worked closely with Charlie. The show will feature several special guests throughout the week, including Victor Davis Hanson, as they process where America and the world stand in this moment.

Challenging Voices of Despair

Eric speaks forcefully against voices that promote despair or suggest America is entering a dark season. He specifically mentions reading a Peggy Noonan column in the Wall Street Journal that exemplified what he calls "hand-wringing" worldly wisdom. This kind of response, while understandable from a human perspective, is exactly what Christians must reject.

The command to "rejoice in the Lord always" isn't conditional on circumstances being favorable. God specifically gave this instruction for times of war, persecution, and suffering. Eric argues that dwelling on how dark things are becoming actually serves evil by spreading discouragement rather than hope.

Christians are called to be vessels of God's light, hope, humor, life, peace, and joy in the midst of darkness. That is the assignment, regardless of how dire external circumstances appear. Worldly wisdom that focuses on analyzing the darkness rather than shining light into it falls short of what God requires from His people.

God's Sovereignty and the Problem of Evil

Eric tackles one of the most difficult theological questions: how can a good God allow such evil? He points out that God miraculously saved Donald Trump from an assassin's bullet, which means God could have saved Charlie Kirk but chose not to. This creates a genuine theological paradox that tests the depth of people's faith.

The only conclusion, Eric argues, is that God allowed this evil for His greater purposes, just as He allowed the crucifixion of Jesus, the Holocaust, and the execution of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. This doesn't mean God approves of evil or calls it good. The crucifixion was the most horrible event in history, yet God used it for the redemption of humanity.

Eric references Romans 8:28, which promises that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purposes. This includes even the worst atrocities. While the Holocaust was evil, it led to the establishment of the state of Israel. Bonhoeffer's execution by the Nazis seemed like a tragedy, yet his martyrdom gave his writings and witness an impact that continues decades later.

Charlie Kirk, Eric believes, is a modern-day Bonhoeffer. His death will catalyze an explosion of faith in Jesus across the world that wouldn't have been possible otherwise. If you could ask Charlie whether he'd be willing to give his life for such a purpose, Eric is certain he would say yes without hesitation.

The Coming Revival

Eric predicts that Charlie's martyrdom will spark not just superficial religious interest, but genuine transformation. People won't just say they believe in Jesus and then return to secular worldviews. Instead, they'll ask what it means to live differently because of faith in Christ.

This includes radical changes in personal behavior: refusing to sleep with someone you're not married to, praying for God to send the spouse He has chosen, building families that serve God together. Young people in particular will find meaning, joy, hope, and purpose by following Charlie's example of integrating faith into every area of life.

Eric has been sensing for months that we're living in historic times. Just as God parted the Red Sea, called America into existence, and raised up Martin Luther, God is working in history right now. The murder of Charlie Kirk is part of that movement, as horrifying as that is to contemplate. The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church, as the early church father Tertullian said in the second century.

Conservatism, patriotism, and love for America's founding principles will explode not just domestically but around the world. Eric has already seen evidence of this in places like South Korea and London, which seemed almost unbelievable to him.

Who Can Replace Charlie Kirk?

The short answer is nobody. Eric calls the question itself ridiculous, like asking who the next Bonhoeffer or Wilberforce will be. There was only one of each of those men, and there's only one Charlie Kirk. He did his job, and now the question for everyone else is: what is your job?

God created each person uniquely with specific assignments. Comparing yourself to others in a broken way is actually agreeing with Satan, Eric warns. When you think you haven't done enough or don't make enough money or aren't as effective as someone else, you're listening to the voice of the devil who murdered Charlie Kirk.

That said, the practical work Charlie did must continue. Perhaps Erika Kirk, his widow, will step in to lead Turning Point USA. Perhaps many people will take up campus tours rather than having one tour but a hundred. Charlie Kirk tours could spread across America, with voices like Frank Turek, Ben Shapiro, and others stepping into the breach. Each person brings different gifts and perspectives, and that's exactly as it should be.

The goal isn't to clone Charlie but to be faithful to your own calling. Model yourself on people you admire, but don't try to become them. You're meant to be you, and God has equipped you specifically for what He's calling you to do.

The Reality of Hell and Satanic Evil

Eric addresses the existence of hell directly, a topic many Christians avoid or downplay. If anything can galvanize believers to talk about hell, it's the murder of Charlie Kirk and the obvious manifestation of satanic evil. This isn't about people with different political viewpoints or alternative visions for government. This is about evil itself.

Over the past five years especially, observable events in America have indicated something beyond normal political conflict. When you solve for X in the equation of what's happened, it smells like evil. Charlie Kirk talked about this with Tucker Carlson, and Eric has discussed it with Tucker as well. The days of conventional political battles between figures like Gary Hart, Michael Dukakis, Bob Dole, and George H.W. Bush are over. We're now in a struggle between light and darkness, good and evil.

Recognizing that evil is real should be frightening, but in a productive way. That fear should drive people to understand that the only answer is Jesus. Being a better person or trying harder won't defeat evil. None of us has that power on our own. Only God can defeat evil, and only by submitting utterly to Jesus and His will can we stand against it.

Without God, you're dead. Your efforts to fight evil on your own will fail. If you're foolish enough to think you can do it alone, Eric prays you'll eventually realize you're outgunned and outmatched. But with Jesus, you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. Standing on the rock of Christ Jesus, you're protected by Him, and He can fight for you and through you when you yield your heart to Him.

A Call to Radical Faith

Eric rarely speaks as directly as he does in this broadcast, but he believes we're living in a new day that demands radical faith. Radical not just in theology but in the thoughts we allow ourselves to think about ourselves and others. Radical in rejecting what the enemy whispers, because Satan only needs to lead you astray a little bit to neutralize your effectiveness.

Everyone is in a battle, but God has created us for the battle, called us to it, and is with us in it. That's beautiful, not burdensome. God sees you, knows your thoughts, loves you, and has a specific plan for you. He knows you infinitely better than you can ever know yourself, and He knows what He created you to do.

For those who don't believe in God or aren't sure, Eric shares what worked for him as a young man. His friend Ed Tuttle advised him to ask God to reveal Himself, even though Eric wasn't sure God existed. If you're in enough pain or feeling lost enough, simply pray: "God, I don't know if you're there, but if you are, lead me to yourself. Give me a sign. Show me what assignment you have for me in this life."

Eric promises from personal experience that God will respond. It doesn't always happen easily or clearly, and the Christian life involves real struggles. Eric himself has battled depression for over 30 years. But even in those challenges, the command is to praise the Lord in all circumstances because God has the plan and knows the end from the beginning.

Eric mentions his work with Socrates in the City, which aims to lead people to the source of the good, true, and beautiful, which is Jesus. At the Concerned Women for America event in Washington DC, a young woman told him that her husband became a Christian through watching Socrates in the City videos, and they met at a TPUSA event. Hearing such testimonies thrills Eric because that's exactly why he does this work.

The murder of Charlie Kirk changes everything. Eric wouldn't be speaking this way if it hadn't happened. But praise God, even for this, because God is using it to awaken people to the reality of spiritual warfare and the desperate need for Jesus. Hell is real. Evil is real. And the only answer is the God who defeats both.
