John Stossel Examines Kamala Harris' Policy Flip-Flops and Massive Spending Plans From Fracking to Government Healthcare

John Stossel examines Kamala Harris' political record, revealing a pattern of policy reversals and ambitious spending proposals. From her initial plans for $21 trillion in monthly stimulus payments to mandatory gun buybacks and fracking bans, Harris has reversed course on multiple major issues. Stossel highlights her 92% staff turnover rate, her role as the most liberal senator according to GovTrack rankings, and her shifting positions on criminal justice. While her campaign now distances itself from many of these earlier stances, Stossel questions which version of Harris represents her true governing philosophy and expresses gratitude for the constitutional checks on executive power regardless of who wins the presidency.

The Mystery of Kamala Harris' Public Persona

Kamala Harris rarely holds news conferences or takes questions from reporters. Instead, she delivers the same speech from a teleprompter repeatedly, with her campaign releasing carefully produced videos proclaiming beliefs in a future where every person has the opportunity to get ahead. But the question remains: would Harris' policies actually allow that?

The Spending Record That Broke Records

America is on track to bankruptcy, and Harris has repeatedly cast tie-breaking votes to spend more taxpayer money, including unlocking the ability to pass a COVID relief package without Republican votes. When John Stossel previously ran a game show comparing candidates' spending plans, he found that Trump and Biden wanted to increase spending by more than $200 billion, while Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders proposed increases in the trillions.

The biggest spending plans, however, came from Kamala Harris. Her proposals would have exploded the national debt. Biden's irresponsible spending ignited the highest inflation in 41 years. The implication is clear: imagine what inflation would be like if Harris had been President.

In her first policy speech, she proposed almost $2 trillion in new spending, including providing first-time home buyers with $25,000. Yet $2 trillion is small compared to what she wanted to do during COVID: give every American $2,000 a month, which would have cost $21 trillion.

Healthcare Takeover and the Flip-Flop Begins

Harris has endorsed eliminating private health insurance and having government take it all over. Even CNN anchors seemed puzzled by this position, asking: "So, for people out there who like their insurance, they don't get to keep it?" Harris responded that the idea is that everyone gets access to medical care.

Her campaign now says she no longer supports entirely government-run health care. She has flip-flopped on other issues as well.

The Fracking Reversal

Harris stated unequivocally: "There's no question, I'm in favor of banning fracking." She told this to CNN directly. But now, Harris wants votes in Pennsylvania, where fracking provides jobs. Her campaign now says she won't ban fracking and even claims that Republicans' assertions that she wanted a fracking ban are "false" and "an obvious attempt to distract."

But what's false? That's what she said on camera: "There's no question, I'm in favor of banning fracking."

Gun Control Proposals and More Reversals

Harris also wanted to force gun owners to sell their guns to the government, stating: "I support a mandatory buyback program." Mandatory. But again, a Harris campaign spokesperson now says that the Vice President would no longer require this.

The Real Kamala Harris on Criminal Justice

Who is the real Kamala Harris? She used to brag about being a tough prosecutor, even against the smallest offenses, declaring: "I decided I was going to start prosecuting parents for truancy."

But then, when progressives said "abolish the police," she flip-flopped. During the George Floyd riots, when people were looting and setting fires, Harris tweeted support to "help post bail for those protesting." Now that the policing pendulum has swung back, she again brags about locking people up: "I took on perpetrators of all kinds."

During the 2019 Democratic debate, Tulsi Gabbard pointed out her hypocrisy: "She put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana." That was true. When asked if she had ever smoked, Harris responded: "I have. I did, I did inhale," followed by laughter.

Staff Turnover and Management Issues

Another criticism of Harris is that she's nasty to people who work for her. There has been a 92% turnover on her staff. Politico called her office "abusive" and "an unhealthy environment."

If she were a hard-charging boss who got results, that might be acceptable, but consider what happened when Biden put her in charge of the border. More than 302,000 migrants crossed the southern border. Of course, more people crossed—Harris promised them free stuff, committing to Medicare for all, even to people who are in this country illegally. She stated: "I am opposed to any policy that would deny any human being, public education, or public health. Period."

Media Protection and Deleted Records

The legacy media want to protect Harris because they hate Trump so much. They were more honest when Harris ran against other Democrats. One interviewer noted: "You're considered the most liberal United States senator." When Harris tried to deflect by saying somebody said that, the interviewer corrected: "Well, actually, the nonpartisan GovTrack has rated you as the most liberal senator."

GovTrack's ranking of Harris was up on their site for five years. But once it looked like she would get the nomination, they deleted the page. When questioned about it, they said votes from one legislative session are "not sufficient to create a reliable portrait."

Woke Politics and Equity Over Equality

Harris says weird things repeatedly: "What can be, unburdened by what has been." She also says radical things about equity versus equality: "Yes, we do talk about equity. We actually believe it is a good principle."

Equality and equal opportunity aren't good enough, she argues. She wants more government redistribution so that everybody should end up in the same place.

Harris embraces the word "woke" enthusiastically: "We have to stay woke. Like everybody needs to be woke." She continued laughing about the concept: "You can talk about if you're the wokest, or woker, but just stay more woke than less woke."

The Silver Lining: Constitutional Checks on Power

It's upsetting that this big government opportunist and a crass egomaniac are the choices for President. The good news is that America's Founders wisely created checks on executive power.

Foolish media often say the president "runs the country," claiming "the worst person possible is running the country." But the President runs just one of three branches of government, each of which was designed to be able to stop the other from doing something crazy.

The Founders demanded limited government because they'd seen the damage done by tyrants. With these two candidates, gratitude for those limits on executive power is warranted. The hope is that they stick.
