Megyn Kelly Refuses to Condemn Candace Owens Despite Ben Shapiro Calling Her a Coward at AmericaFest

Categories: Analysis
January 9, 2026

Megyn Kelly opens up about being called an anti-Semite for refusing to disavow Candace Owens and end their friendship. Kelly reveals Ben Shapiro publicly called her a coward at Turning Point USA's AmericaFest in December, despite previously texting her that their friendship was too important to depend on whom else they befriend. In a conversation with Tucker Carlson, Kelly argues that demanding people condemn and defriend those who question Israel is disgusting bullying, not a defense of free speech. She warns that hate crime laws codifying criticism of Israel as anti-Semitism, already passed in states like Florida, will backfire and actually fuel the anti-Semitism they claim to prevent. Kelly stands firm: she's responsible for her own words, not policing others, and refuses to bend the knee to those trying to control her through social pressure and cancellation tactics.

Called an Anti-Semite for Refusing to Defriend Candace Owens

Megyn Kelly addresses accusations of anti-Semitism leveled against her, not for anything she said or did, but for refusing to condemn and defriend Candace Owens. Kelly emphasizes she is responsible for her own words, not for policing what others say. She rejects the pressure campaign demanding she publicly denounce Owens, stating she has no desire and no power to control anyone else's speech.

Kelly reveals that critics desperately want her to join in condemning Owens, believing that if just one more voice speaks out against her, Owens could finally be controlled. Kelly dismisses this thinking, pointing out how ineffective such tactics have been so far. The instinct, she argues, is simply to stop speech they disagree with—to silence Candace, to silence Tucker Carlson, to make them stop saying things that make certain people uncomfortable.

Ben Shapiro's Public Betrayal at AmericaFest

Kelly shares a stunning revelation about her relationship with Ben Shapiro. In their last text exchange, Shapiro told her that their friendship was too important to both of them to make it depend on whom else they are friends with. Shortly after that message, Shapiro stood on stage at Turning Point USA's AmericaFest in December and publicly called Kelly a coward for refusing to condemn and defriend those who question Israel.

This experience convinced Kelly that there exists a group for whom everything revolves around Israel—where friendships don't matter, love relationships potentially don't matter. The only thing that matters is whether you are standing up for Israel. Even more than that, you must not just condemn but defriend anyone who raises questions about Israel. It's essential that the other person be excised from polite society, ostracized, told by the world that they're terrible and evil.

The Hypocrisy of Not Calling for Cancellation

Kelly highlights the contradiction in those who claim they're not calling for cancellation or deplatforming while simultaneously working to achieve exactly that. They insist they're not anti-free speech, but then demand that the targeted person never appear at a Turning Point event again, never be invited to CPAC, never be seen at a White House event, and never be platformed on independent shows in the digital space.

According to Kelly, these critics claim the person can technically exist in the ether with a microphone—that's fine, they're not anti-free speech—but they pressure and cancel everyone around them for continuing a relationship with them. Kelly calls this behavior absolutely disgusting.

I'd Rather Die Than Do That

In conversation with Tucker Carlson, Kelly states emphatically that she'd rather die than bend to this pressure. Now that critics have made defriending people the stakes of her so-called friendships with them, she absolutely won't do it. She declares that even if she has actual disagreements that she would otherwise raise, she won't now—because she refuses to raise her fist and say BLM at the table, and she won't bend the knee to bullies who think they can control her.

Kelly reflects that she doesn't think she's ever said an anti-Semitic thing in her life, and she's positive Tucker Carlson hasn't either. Yet critics never point to anything actually anti-Semitic that was said.

States Codifying Criticism of Israel as Anti-Semitism

Carlson raises an important point that while these debates rage on, several states, including Florida, have codified anti-Semitism as a crime. They've defined it in a way so expansive that criticism of Israel is considered anti-Semitic. The claim that someone is Israel First is now effectively a crime in the state of Florida under legislation signed by Governor Ron DeSantis.

Carlson expresses concern that most people don't even know this happened, and that plenty of states have done the same. He warns that Americans will wake up one morning with European-style hate crimes laws written in a way that is not fair, that doesn't serve justice, and is basically just another form of identity politics at the point of a gun.

These Laws Will Cause Anti-Semitism

Kelly agrees that this legislation represents identity politics and offers what she considers the number two reason (after free speech principles) why such laws shouldn't exist: they will cause anti-Semitism. Carlson agrees absolutely that such laws will have the opposite of their intended effect.

Kelly explains how people don't understand the rise of figures like Nick Fuentes. She argues that many young white men in particular have been told for years that identity is everything—that they need to figure out which group is theirs because society is factioning into groups. These young men have accepted the messaging from BLM and woke leftists taught to them from K-12, through university, grad school, by media, and by corporate America: that identity does matter and their very goodness will be rated on whether they accept this premise.

Having accepted this framework, some young white men are now leaning into white identity politics and then being shamed because the leader of that movement happens to be Nick Fuentes. Kelly argues that Jews who push these laws in places like Florida and New York think the answer to anti-Semitism is to get themselves recategorized as one of the protected DEI groups. But that's not the answer—the answer is to demolish DEI, to stop separating people by group.

You're Allowed to Have Bad Thoughts in America

Kelly makes a fundamental point about American freedom: the more you crack down on people's thought crimes against Israel or their anti-Semitism, the more you engender the very hatred you claim to oppose. This is America—you're allowed to be a racist, you're allowed to be a misogynist, you're allowed to be an anti-Semite. You're not allowed to make hiring and firing decisions based on that, but that's not what's being argued here. The debate is about what's in your head and heart.

The more critics try to criminalize those thoughts or ruin someone's life over them, the more they create the very hatred they say they're objecting to. This is partly why Kelly tweeted that it's not Tucker Carlson and his views on Israel causing anti-Semitism—it's people like Ben Shapiro and Bari Weiss.

The ADL Calls Her Anti-Semitic for Defending Herself

Kelly describes the vicious cycle that ensues. The ADL called her an anti-Semite for her tweet. She notes she didn't attack Bari Weiss or Ben Shapiro—they attacked her simply because she wouldn't defriend people. She responded by saying their behavior is going to cause more anti-Semitism, that they shouldn't do that because it undermines the very thing they claim to care about. Then the ADL swooped in to call her an anti-Semite for saying that to them.

According to Kelly, you're not allowed to defend yourself against their attacks by pointing out that they're bringing more hatred into the argument—because doing so gets you labeled an anti-Semite. The cycle continues on and on.

Most American Jews Don't Make Israel the Stakes of Relationships

Despite all this, Kelly genuinely believes what she's saying and genuinely doesn't want additional anti-Jewish hatred in America. She emphasizes that most normal American Jewish people would never make Israel the stakes of a relationship. She knows many Jewish friends who are sick of talking about Israel. Ben Shapiro, Bari Weiss, and Mark Levin don't speak for the vast majority of American Jewish people who would never think of making feelings about Benjamin Netanyahu the condition of friendship or love relationships.

[00:00] Some are calling me an anti-semite. Why?

[00:02] What did I say? What did I do? Did I

[00:04] step on a rake and say something super

[00:06] anti-Semitic without realizing it? No.

[00:08] It's because I won't deffriend you. And

[00:13] I won't condemn and say that Candace

[00:16] Owens is hateful. They want me really,

[00:19] really badly to condemn Candace Owens.

[00:22] And I'm sorry to break it to them, but I

[00:24] am responsible for what I say, not for

[00:27] what anybody else says. I am not Candace

[00:29] Owens's policeman. And by the way,

[00:32] they're kidding themselves that if just

[00:34] one more voice will say something nasty

[00:36] about Candace, she could finally be

[00:38] controlled. Like, how well has that

[00:39] worked so far? But again, the instinct

[00:41] is to to stop her. Stop her speech. Stop

[00:44] it. Make her stop it. Make Tucker stop

[00:47] saying the things. Well, I have no

[00:50] desire to and I have no power to. And

[00:53] for that I was called a coward by Ben

[00:56] Shapiro at the Turning Point event

[00:58] Amfest in December who by the way in my

[01:01] last exchange with him literally said

[01:05] our friendship his and mine is too

[01:08] important to both of us to make it

[01:10] depend on who else whom else we are

[01:14] friends with and aren't friends with.

[01:16] That is literally the last text I have

[01:18] from Ben Shapiro. The next thing I knew

[01:20] he was standing on the stage at Turning

[01:21] Point calling me a coward for this very

[01:24] thing. So it it there I am convinced now

[01:27] more than ever that there is a crew for

[01:29] whom everything revolves around Israel.

[01:31] That friendships don't matter, love

[01:34] relationships don't potentially matter.

[01:36] What the only thing that matters is

[01:38] whether you are standing up for Israel

[01:41] or not. And on top of that, you can even

[01:43] stand up for Israel as I have. You also

[01:46] must not just condemn but deffriend de

[01:50] befriend anyone who is raising questions

[01:52] about Israel. It's important that that

[01:54] other person be exised from polite

[01:57] society be ostracized. That you join us

[02:00] in our messaging to tell the world that

[02:01] they're terrible. They're evil. They

[02:04] they should be out of polite society.

[02:06] And no, no, we're not calling for

[02:07] cancellation. No one's calling for

[02:09] cancellation or deplatforming. Just

[02:11] stop. That's not what we're doing. We

[02:12] just don't want them ever to appear at a

[02:14] turning point event again. We just don't

[02:16] want them ever to be invited to CPAC. We

[02:18] just never want to see them at a White

[02:19] House event. We just never want ever to

[02:22] see them platformed on your show, which

[02:24] is independent in the digital lane.

[02:25] Absolutely not. So, it's fine. They they

[02:27] technically they can exist in the ether

[02:29] with a microphone. That's fine. We're

[02:30] not we're not anti-free speech, but we

[02:32] just need to pressure and cancel

[02:33] everyone around them for continuing a

[02:36] relationship with them. And it's

[02:38] absolutely disgusting. I heard you say

[02:41] this not long ago, and I completely

[02:43] related. I'd rather die than do that.

[02:46] I'd rather die than do that. And now

[02:48] that they've made that the stakes of my

[02:50] so-called friendships with them,

[02:53] >> I really won't do it. Now I I don't now

[02:55] I don't care what anybody says. Like

[02:57] I'll never do it now. Even if I

[02:59] [laughter] have actual disagreements

[03:01] that I otherwise would raise, hell no.

[03:04] Because I'm not raising the fist and

[03:06] saying BLM at the table. And I'm not

[03:09] bending the knee to these bullies who

[03:11] think they can control me. [laughter]

[03:14] >> [gasps]

[03:15] >> I I always think to myself, I I don't

[03:17] think I've ever said an anti-semitic

[03:18] thing in my life. I'm positive you

[03:20] haven't. They never point to anything

[03:22] that's anti-Semitic.

[03:23] >> No.

[03:23] >> But what's interesting is while the rest

[03:25] of us are having these debates, a bunch

[03:27] of different states, including the state

[03:29] of Florida, the most important state in

[03:31] a lot of ways,

[03:32] >> has codified

[03:34] anti-semitism as a crime. And they've

[03:37] defined not anti- anything, just

[03:39] anti-semitism.

[03:40] And they've defined it in a way that is

[03:44] so expansive that criticism of Israel is

[03:47] anti-semitic. The claim that someone is

[03:49] Israel first is ant is a crime in the

[03:51] state of Florida. Dantis signed this.

[03:54] And I'm just like, well, wait a second.

[03:55] I mean, I don't think most people even

[03:57] know that that happened. And plenty of

[03:58] states have done that. And so I think

[04:01] we're going to wake up one morning with

[04:02] European hate crimes laws written in a

[04:05] way that is not fair at all. That

[04:08] doesn't affect justice and is basically

[04:09] just another form of identity politics

[04:11] at the point of a gun. I think this is

[04:13] going to happen.

[04:14] >> It is identity politics. It really is.

[04:17] And I'll tell you the the number one

[04:19] reason apart from the free speech

[04:21] principles, I guess the number two

[04:22] reason we shouldn't be doing that. It

[04:24] will cause anti-semitism.

[04:26] >> Well, exactly. absolutely

[04:27] [clears throat] will cause in the same

[04:28] way that now like people don't

[04:31] understand Nick Fuentes. You you may be

[04:32] familiar with him. Um they don't

[04:34] understand him, right? Like why why are

[04:37] people flocking to Nick Fuentes? You

[04:38] know what it's because a lot of young

[04:41] white men in particular have been told

[04:43] for years now that identity is

[04:45] everything. It's everything. It does

[04:47] matter what what what is your inroup and

[04:50] those are your compadres and you better

[04:52] get you know some alignment there

[04:54] because we're factioning now into groups

[04:57] and you better figure out which one is

[04:58] yours and so there are a lot of young

[05:00] white men who have accepted the

[05:02] messaging of the BLMs and the woksters

[05:03] on the left and have understood now like

[05:06] you know what I don't want to follow

[05:08] what Tucker Carlson is saying that we

[05:09] don't judge people like that even though

[05:11] we're on the right that I'm accepting

[05:13] the messaging that's been taught to me

[05:14] my by my teachers K through 12 by my

[05:16] university professors for four years, by

[05:19] my grad school professors, by the media,

[05:23] by corporate America, all of them, which

[05:24] is identity does matter. Your very

[05:27] goodness will be rated on whether you

[05:29] accept this premise. And they've

[05:30] accepted it and now they're leaning into

[05:32] white identity politics and then being

[05:34] shamed because the the leader of those

[05:37] happens to be Nick Fuentes. So that what

[05:40] what the the Jews who push those laws

[05:42] and it is a lot of Jews down in in um

[05:44] Florida and a lot of Jewish people in

[05:45] New York too um they think that the

[05:48] answer to anti-semitism which is a

[05:50] problem to some extent of course is to

[05:53] get themselves recategorized as one of

[05:55] the protected DEI groups and of course

[05:57] it's not. The answer is to demolish DEI.

[06:00] >> Of course

[06:00] >> the answer is to stop separating us by

[06:02] group. And the more you start cracking

[06:04] down on people's thought crimes against

[06:08] Israel or even their anti-semitism truly

[06:11] like this is America. You're allowed to

[06:13] be a racist. You're allowed to be a

[06:14] misogynist. You're allowed to be an

[06:15] anti-semite. You're not allowed to like

[06:17] make hiring and firing decisions based

[06:19] on that. But that's not what we're

[06:20] arguing over here. It's we're talking

[06:22] about what's in your head and your

[06:22] heart. The more you try to criminalize

[06:25] that or ruin someone's life over those

[06:27] thoughts, the more you engender the very

[06:30] hatred you say you're objecting to. And

[06:34] this is part in part reason that Tucker

[06:36] the reason Tucker that I tweeted out

[06:38] that it it's not Tucker Carlson and his

[06:42] views on Israel that are causing

[06:44] anti-semites.

[06:46] It is more Ben Shapiro and the Barry

[06:49] Weisses of the world. And of course the

[06:51] ADL then called me an anti-semite

[06:53] because that what [laughter] happens is

[06:55] you know that you see the cycle right

[06:56] like you get attacked I didn't attack

[06:59] barrier Ben they attacked me again just

[07:01] because I wouldn't deffriend people.

[07:03] They attacked me. I said to them that

[07:05] behavior is going to cause anti-semites.

[07:07] Like you shouldn't do that because this

[07:08] is actually undermining the very thing

[07:09] you say you care about. Then he swoops

[07:11] in the ADL to say you're an anti-semite

[07:13] for saying that to them. you're not

[07:15] allowed to defend yourself against their

[07:16] attacks by saying, "Hey, you're the one

[07:18] who's bringing more hatred into this

[07:21] argument because then that, you know, so

[07:23] on and on it goes." But I genuinely

[07:25] believe it and I genuinely don't want

[07:27] additional Jew hatred happening in

[07:29] happening in this country. Most normal

[07:31] American Jewish people would never make

[07:34] Israel the stakes of a relationship.

[07:36] There I know so many Jewish dear friends

[07:38] of mine who are sick of talking about

[07:39] Israel. Ben, Barry, Levvin, they don't

[07:43] speak for the vast majority of American

[07:45] Jewish people who would never think of

[07:48] making your feelings about Benjamin

[07:49] Netanyahu the stakes of your friendship

[07:52] or love relationship. It's been a lot of

[07:54] noise in the news recently, but none of

[07:56] it matters if you can't hear it. There's

[07:58] [laughter] no shame in this. Millions of

[08:01] people get deafer every year. Some we

[08:04] know well, but your friends, our friends

[08:06] at Audient can help. For years, the

[08:08] experts made hearing aids cost thousands

[08:10] of dollars. They forced you to get a

[08:11] prescription, see a doctor, jump through

[08:14] all these hoops just to hear your

[08:15] grandkids talk or have a conversation in

[08:17] a restaurant. Why? Because they made

[08:18] money. That's why over 460 million

[08:22] people worldwide have hearing loss. Yet

[08:24] 80% do not have hearing aids. Cuz who'd

[08:26] want to deal with that? So, it's a

[08:28] crisis and it's being ignored. And

[08:30] that's why Audian is the answer. It

[08:32] offers FDA compliant hearing aids for as

[08:34] low as 98 bucks. No prescription, no

[08:37] doctor's visit. Over a million and a

[08:39] half Americans already using them to
