Michael Knowles on Charlie Kirk's Boundless Energy and Building the Biggest Organization on the Right

Categories: Tributes
September 11, 2025

Michael Knowles reflects on his friendship with Charlie Kirk, recounting their first meeting in a Fox News green room where Kirk's boundless energy left an immediate impression. From founding Turning Point USA at 18 to becoming essential to President Trump's 2024 campaign, Kirk built the biggest organization on the right while inspiring confidence from major donors and young voters alike. Knowles argues it's no exaggeration to say Trump might not have won in 2024 without Kirk's work. Through it all, Kirk published five books, married his wife Erika, and started a family while expanding TPUSA into multiple divisions including political action, faith, and women's leadership.

A Green Room Encounter That Revealed Boundless Energy

Michael Knowles remembers his first meeting with Charlie Kirk vividly. It was in a tiny green room at the Fox News bureau in Los Angeles, sometime around 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning. Knowles was half asleep in his chair when Kirk walked in, likely fresh off a flight from a different time zone. Despite the hour, Kirk was bouncing off the walls with energy.

"Hey, Michael!" Kirk greeted him, immediately launching into conversation about everything—politics, practical politics in the early days of Trump. The encounter left a lasting impression on Knowles: Charlie Kirk possessed absolute boundless energy and all of the skills necessary for what lay ahead.

From High School Graduate to Turning Point USA Founder

After graduating high school, Kirk made a decision that would define his trajectory. He was planning to attend college but realized it would not be a useful way to spend his time and money. Instead, at just 18 years old, he founded Turning Point USA.

What followed was remarkable. Kirk raised significant amounts of money, inspiring confidence from major donors who believed in his vision. Simultaneously, he connected with and inspired confidence from the young voters he was reaching. This dual ability—to command respect from established conservative donors while energizing a new generation—allowed him to turn Turning Point USA into the biggest organization on the right.

Essential to President Trump's 2024 Victory

Charlie Kirk became extraordinarily important to the Trump campaign. According to Knowles, it is no exaggeration to say that President Trump in 2024 might very well not have been elected without Charlie Kirk.

Kirk expanded Turning Point USA far beyond a single nonprofit. The organization grew to include the political action division, the faith division, women's leadership, and numerous other divisions—each addressing different aspects of the conservative movement and reaching different constituencies.

Building a Life While Building a Movement

As he built this organizational empire, Kirk also built a personal life. He published five books, married his beautiful wife, and had two wonderful children. The same boundless energy that Knowles witnessed in that green room years ago carried Kirk through not just professional achievements but personal milestones as well.

From that early morning encounter to becoming one of the most influential figures in conservative politics, Charlie Kirk's journey exemplifies what happens when talent, energy, and vision align with the willingness to take an unconventional path.
