MLB Commentators Call Cubs Rookie Matt Shaw 'Weird' for Attending Charlie Kirk's Memorial Service
Chicago Cubs rookie Matt Shaw faces backlash from MLB commentators after missing a game to attend Charlie Kirk's memorial service. Shaw, who connected with Kirk through their shared faith and love for the Cubs, received permission to attend but was criticized on air for leaving his team during the season. The commentators spent minutes discussing the decision as "weird" and "unprecedented," sparking debate about double standards in sports media. Shaw himself addressed the controversy, stating he had no concern about backlash and that his faith drives everything he does. Meanwhile, supporters raised nearly half a million dollars for the Kirk family through merchandise sales, with a goal of reaching one million dollars.
Chicago Cubs rookie Matt Shaw made headlines when he missed a game to attend the memorial service of Charlie Kirk. Shaw, who met Kirk at apartments in Arizona where he lived, developed a friendship with the Turning Point USA founder based on their shared Christian faith and mutual love for the Cubs. Kirk would text Shaw after every game with messages of support and encouragement.
When Kirk's wife Erika reached out to Shaw asking him to attend the memorial service, the rookie felt it was important to honor that request. During a press conference, Shaw addressed the decision directly, explaining that his connection with Kirk was rooted in faith, not politics.
"My connection with Charlie was through our faith," Shaw stated. "That's something that drives me every day. That's the reason why I'm able to do what I do every day. I know without my faith and without the many blessings I've been given in my life that I wouldn't be here able to talk to you guys, able to help this team eventually go and win championships."
When asked if he was concerned about potential backlash, Shaw responded clearly: "I'm not concerned at all. Whatever backlash comes is okay. I feel strong about my faith and that what was meant to be happening."
MLB Commentators Spark Controversy
During the Cubs game that Shaw missed, commentators addressed his absence on air, sparking significant controversy with their characterization of the decision. The broadcast team spent several minutes discussing Shaw's attendance at Kirk's memorial service, using language that many found insensitive.
One commentator stated: "It was later revealed that he had been given permission to attend Charlie Kirk's funeral. And I don't want to talk about any of the politics of it, but the thought of leaving your team in the middle of a race for any reason other than a family emergency really strikes me as weird."
Another commentator added: "It's unusual. I think it's unprecedented, at least from my experience as a player, and I think it made it a little bit more unusual that it was not revealed until after it came to issue because he was thought to be in the dugout and maybe available and then was not and that's how it was revealed."
The commentators continued to discuss whether Shaw being a rookie made the decision "more or less egregious," and noted that the situation did not qualify for baseball's bereavement list, suggesting this "gives you a clue as to how it was received by a lot of people."
Response to the Criticism
The commentary sparked strong reactions from those who saw the criticism as unfair and revealing of double standards in sports media. Critics pointed out that the commentators spent multiple minutes discussing Shaw's personal decision while he was at bat, rather than focusing on his actual performance in the game.
The response emphasized that in Christian faith, believers are considered brothers and sisters in Christ, making Kirk a family member in that spiritual sense. When Kirk's widow asked Shaw to attend the memorial service, he was honoring a request from family.
Critics of the commentators argued that if an athlete had attended George Floyd's funeral, the same broadcasters would never have characterized it as "weird" or questioned the decision. The suggestion was made that the commentators should apologize for their insensitive language and for inserting personal bias into what should have been objective sports commentary.
"You guys can comment on the logistics of bereavement leave or whatever the case may be when it comes to the MLB, but to make a personal insertion that you personally think that is weird, that's subjective," one response noted. "You guys are supposed to be announcing objective for the most part. You guys can't insert biases in one player's actions."
Memorial Service and Faith Focus
Those who attended Kirk's memorial service noted that the event focused almost entirely on faith and Jesus, with speakers celebrating Kirk's Christian witness and impact. The service was described as honoring one of the biggest Christian martyrs in recent memory, making Shaw's attendance a matter of spiritual significance.
One attendee noted: "They didn't say they didn't talk about nothing but Jesus except Trump. You know, he had to do his own thing. But everybody else talk about nothing but Jesus."
The question was raised: "Who would be mad at you for doing that?" when considering that the service centered on Christian faith and remembrance.
Fundraising Efforts for the Kirk Family
In the wake of Kirk's passing, significant fundraising efforts were launched to support his wife Erika and their children. A limited edition tumbler was created, with 100% of profits going directly to the Kirk family. Only 100 special edition tumblers were produced, each coming with two shirts and additional items.
The fundraising campaign exceeded all expectations. Initially projected to raise a modest amount, the effort generated massive support from across the country. Over 19,000 orders were placed, resulting in more than 40,000 shirts being printed. The volume was so overwhelming that 35 volunteers per day came to headquarters to help fold shirts and fulfill orders.
"To be honest, I only thought that there would be like a couple thousand people that buy the shirts or whatever and then we'll just donate it to the family. I mean, it went crazy," organizers shared. "These are way more orders than we've ever gotten in a short period of time."
The fundraising has already reached approximately half a million dollars, with a goal of presenting Erika Kirk with a one million dollar check. The decision on how to use the funds will be entirely hers, whether for her children's college education, Turning Point USA, or other purposes.
"God put this on my heart to do it," the organizer explained. "100% of the profit will go directly to the family. So, as soon as we finish it up, we're going to try to with her blessing, I will continue past this point with her blessing and we'll be able to give her a larger check at AmericaFest."
Standing for Conviction in Professional Sports
Shaw's decision highlighted the reality that many conservative athletes exist in professional sports but often remain silent about their beliefs due to potential backlash. His willingness to openly stand for his faith, regardless of criticism, was celebrated as an act of courage.
"There's a lot of celebrity athletes that are conservative. They can't openly say it. They don't project it. But it is also good when you see people that say, 'I don't care what you think. I'm going to stand for what's right,'" supporters noted.
The Cubs play 162 games in a regular season, and Shaw's decision to miss one game for a memorial service was seen by supporters as a reasonable choice that showed his priorities and values. The Cubs lost that particular game 1-0, but critics argued that blaming the loss on Shaw's absence was unfair and overlooked other factors in the game.
Shaw's actions demonstrated that for some athletes, faith and personal convictions take precedence over potential career complications or media criticism. His clear statement that he had no concerns about backlash sent a message that his Christian faith was non-negotiable, regardless of the professional consequences.
