Brandon Tatum Reacts to Tom MacDonald's Charlie Kirk Tribute Song and Shares Memories of His Friend
Brandon Tatum plays Tom MacDonald's tribute song written for Charlie Kirk, then opens up about what it's been like processing the loss of a friend and mentor who gave him his start back in 2017 and 2018. Tatum recalls Charlie's relentless work ethic, from cross-country travel with an overstuffed garment bag to texting him right up until his death, and explains why he's launching Charlie-branded shirts with proceeds going directly to Kirk's family. The segment closes with a series of older clips of Charlie Kirk himself, reflecting on why he turned down West Point at eighteen to start Turning Point USA around the ideas of American exceptionalism, the Constitution, and free enterprise, alongside a moment from Erika Kirk speaking proudly about the sacrifices her husband made for the movement. Charlie's own words about Turning Point USA representing the biggest generational shift since Woodstock, and his answer to how he wanted to be remembered, close out the tribute.
Brandon Tatum Plays Tom MacDonald's Tribute Song for Charlie Kirk
Brandon Tatum introduces a song written by Tom MacDonald in tribute to Charlie Kirk, telling his audience he hasn't watched it yet himself but trusts MacDonald's track record. "Tom MacDonald normally have bangers," Tatum says, adding that another friend, Nick, had already told him the song was excellent.
The Lyrics: "You Can't Kill Freedom"
The song reflects on Kirk's death at 31, framing him as a man killed for speaking his mind and leaving behind a wife, daughter, and son.
"They may have killed a soldier, but that man had an army. This is far more deep than some political parties. And you can't kill freedom. So this one is for Charlie," MacDonald sings, later adding, "We ain't backing off or giving up. I'll preach what you taught me."
Brandon Tatum on Losing a Friend and Mentor
After the song plays, Tatum admits he held back tears, calling it a good song before reflecting on how he's processing Kirk's death.
"One minute I'm accepting it, and the next minute I'm confused, like, did this really happen?" Tatum says, admitting it still feels like "just an internet thing" rather than reality, something he expects will change once he visits Turning Point USA's headquarters and attends the funeral.
Tatum credits Kirk, who gave him his start around 2017 and 2018, with shaping his own work ethic.
"Charlie inspired me to be who I am today when it comes to hustle," Tatum says, recalling traveling with Kirk and seeing him carry a garment bag stuffed with ten suits, and saying he pushed himself to match Kirk's pace, at one point visiting 22 universities in a single calendar year. He recounts that the last thing Kirk ever texted him was a simple request to post something for SAS, to which, as with every other request from Kirk or Turning Point, his answer was yes.
Charlie Shirts to Benefit the Kirk Family
Tatum announces he's producing Charlie Kirk-branded shirts, with all proceeds going directly to Kirk's family, along with a separate donation link. "I wanted to wear a Charlie shirt, so I'm making them," he says, adding that anyone interested in supporting the family is welcome to buy one too.
Looking Back: How Charlie Kirk Built Turning Point USA
The segment shifts to archival footage of Charlie Kirk discussing the origins of Turning Point USA. Kirk explains that he turned down his dream school, the United States Military Academy at West Point, and started the organization at eighteen instead.
"I have this idea to galvanize and motivate the future youth of this country around a core set of ideas, not just political parties or politicians," Kirk says, naming three: that America is the greatest country in history, that the Constitution is the greatest political document ever written, and that free enterprise is the surest way to lift people out of poverty.
Erika Kirk on the Man Behind the Movement
A clip of Erika Kirk shows her speaking about her husband's sacrifices over the previous year.
"No one gets to see him from my angle except for myself and our children," Erika says, calling him amazing and saying she felt blessed. Charlie responds in the same clip, "I would not have been able to do any of it without Erika. And that's the real truth."
"This Is the Greatest Generational Realignment Since Woodstock"
In another clip, Kirk praises Turning Point USA's student activists as the "freedom fighters of America," pushing back on media skepticism that the organization could ever build a real grassroots movement.
"This is the greatest generational realignment since Woodstock. This generation is the most conservative generation that we have seen in well over 50 years," Kirk says, describing young people, especially young men, as hungry for structure and purpose.
How Charlie Kirk Wanted to Be Remembered
The tribute closes with Kirk answering a simple question about his legacy.
"If everything completely goes away, I want to be remembered for courage, for my faith. That would be the most important thing," Kirk says.
