Charlie Kirk's Faith-Driven Mission
Pastor Rob McCoy opened by sharing the spiritual foundation that guided Charlie Kirk's life and work. Speaking at Charlie's memorial service, McCoy emphasized that Charlie wanted his Savior to be the guest of honor and wanted everyone to receive the gift of understanding the 'why' behind what he did. According to McCoy, Charlie looked at politics as an on-ramp to Jesus. He knew that if he could get young people rowing in the streams of liberty, they would eventually come to the source and ask the Lord.
McCoy, who served as Charlie's long-term pastor and officiated his wedding to Erika Kirk, also serves as co-chair of Turning Point USA Faith. His insights reveal a man whose political activism was inseparable from his faith mission.
Counsel for New Believers
During the memorial service, McCoy witnessed a powerful moment when he asked those who were just finding Christ and connecting with their faith to stand up. When asked what he would tell these new believers who are just starting their journey to follow Charlie's legacy and teachings of the gospel, McCoy's advice was direct: "The first thing I would tell them is they have been born again. Now you have to get to a Bible-believing church, plug into it. The Bible says faith comes from the word of God."
McCoy noted the remarkable irony of Charlie's legacy: "I'm a minister, that's my calling in life. Now I think I need to run for politics because all the politicians were preaching the gospel. It was an amazing day."
An Unprecedented Moment for Faith in America
The memorial service represented something unprecedented in American public life—hours of national news coverage pointed toward a stage that spoke almost exclusively about God and Christianity. McCoy reflected on what this means for the country moving forward, not just for Charlie's legacy but for the nation as a whole.
"Charlie understood the history of our nation," McCoy explained. "As John Adams said, only a moral and religious people can govern a republic. This design of government was established to give people the freedom of speech, the freedom of religion, the freedom to assemble for grievances. That's what Charlie understood."
McCoy drew a powerful comparison: "He was in a sense like Moses—he reawakened an entire generation of young people that have been indoctrinated to hate America and to think our founders were awful. Now they've awakened to the beauty of this form of government and they're excited about it. That's what Charlie did."
Politics as an On-Ramp to Faith
Addressing criticism that Charlie was too political, McCoy reframed the perspective entirely: "People said Charlie was too political. But politics was an on-ramp for a relationship with the Lord. If he could get the young people rowing in the streams of liberty, they would come to the source, which is the Lord."
This philosophy challenges the long-standing notion that Christians should avoid the culture war and political arena. McCoy believes Charlie's life proves that Christians can and should engage in that arena.
The Failure of American Pastors
McCoy didn't hold back in his assessment of why the church has retreated from public engagement. "I would also blame the pastors in America," he stated. "Ours was the first church Charlie preached at. I invited him to speak and he said, 'I don't speak in churches.' And I said, 'Why not?' He said, 'They think I'm too political.'"
McCoy's response to Charlie was instructive: "I said, 'Politics is the highest form of community. It combines morality with sociability. If God didn't want us in politics, He wouldn't have invented marriage. You have to have rules to live together. If you're going to love your neighbor as yourself, then you're going to engage in the public square for the sake of their families.'"
He continued: "I said, 'Charlie, that's exactly where you should be,' because pastors have adopted a gnostic view of the gospel, which is an early heresy—separating the spiritual from the material. They say politics is dirty. My comment to them: the church is dirty. What's your point? Your life is dirty and you're working on that. Why wouldn't you contend for your neighbor's children in the public square, at the school board meetings? That's what Charlie did for these young people. They saw that. He believed in their future, in an America where they could raise a family, have kids, and most importantly, freely worship God without all the censorship and all the misery."
McCoy issued a challenge to pastors: "When people show up at church on Sunday who were at that memorial service, and you said nothing about it, you might want to ask them why they're there. And they're going to say, 'Charlie Kirk.' You might want to learn a little bit about his life, pastor, because he's the one that the Lord used to create an awakening in America."
Erika Kirk's Supernatural Strength and the Gift of Forgiveness
One of the most powerful moments of the discussion centered on Erika Kirk and the scripture from Colossians 3:12-17: "God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another. If any of you has a grievance against someone, as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive."
For many watching Erika extend forgiveness after what happened to Charlie, this was a difficult teaching to accept. McCoy addressed this directly: "It was divine. There's no explanation for Erika having such strength right now other than a supernatural blessing from God. She has been a lioness in the midst of this."
He drew a historical parallel: "A lot of viewers probably don't know Jim Elliott, but he was martyred in the 20th century and it started the largest mission movement in the world. His widow, Elizabeth Elliott, ended up becoming a fixture. Erika Kirk is a modern Elizabeth Elliott. She's going to take this nation to a place of faith and understanding of the most important principle."
McCoy explained the theology of forgiveness that Erika embraced: "When we come to Christ, we realize a multitude of our sins. His blood covered us from past, present, and future. Erika understood that. She dug deep in the Word and she meant what she said."
He clarified an important distinction: "Let me say something to your viewers. Forgiveness is not forgetting—it's putting the consequences in the hands of God and moving on with your life. She let that go and gave it to the Lord. He is before the Lord now. Whatever he faces in the judicial system is the case. We have laws in this nation. Erika has no ill will toward him. She's given that to the Lord, and that is a gift from God."
The conversation concluded with a powerful reminder: "Bitterness and unforgiveness is like drinking poison and expecting somebody else to pass away from it. Let go of that. She did, and it was so beautiful to watch."

[00:01] >> THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
[00:06] >> CHARLIE KIRK PASTOR ROB MCCOY
[00:09] INVITED EVERYONE HOW IMPORTANT
[00:10] FAITH IS TO CHARLIE.
[00:13] >> I'M HERE TODAY TO TELL YOU
[00:16] THE WHY AND WHAT HE DID.
[00:19] THE WIFE BROUGHT HIM THE
[00:22] COURAGE, THE WHY BROUGHT HIM THE
[00:23] WISDOM AND THE STRENGTH.
[00:25] CHARLIE WANTED HIS SAVIOR TO BE
[00:26] THE GUEST OF HONOR.
[00:29] HE WANTED ALL OF YOU TO RECEIVE
[00:30] THIS GIFT FROM HIM, THE WHY AND
[00:32] WHAT HE DID.
[00:34] CHARLIE LOOKED AT POLITICS AS AN
[00:35] ON-RAMP TO JESUS.
[00:39] HE KNEW IF HE COULD GET YOU
[00:40] ROWING IN THE STREAMS OF LIBERTY
[00:41] YOU WOULD COME TO THE SOURCE AND
[00:43] ASK THE LORD.
[00:46] >> PASTOR MCCOY WAS CHARLIE'S
[00:47] LONG-TERM PASTOR AND OFFICIATED
[00:47] HIM IN ERICA'S WEDDING, HE IS
[00:51] THE CO-CHAIR OF TURNING POINT
[00:54] USA FAITH AND HE JOINS US NOW.
[00:55] PASTOR MCCOY THANK YOU SO MUCH
[00:56] FOR JOINING US.
[00:57] I KNOW IT'S BEEN AN EMOTIONAL
[00:59] DAY WE SAW YOU SPEAK EARLIER SO
[01:00] ELOQUENT AND BEAUTIFUL.
[01:02] MY FIRST QUESTION FOR YOU WOULD
[01:05] BE THIS WE SAW HOW MANY
[01:07] BELIEVERS THERE WERE IN THE
[01:08] CROWD TODAY TENS OF THOUSANDS
[01:09] I'M SURE THAT THERE WAS ALSO A
[01:11] MOMENT WHERE YOU TALKED ABOUT
[01:12] THOSE WHO ARE JUST FINDING
[01:15] CHRIST AND JUST CONNECTING WITH
[01:16] THEIR FAITH IN YOU ASKED THEM TO
[01:17] STAND UP.
[01:18] I THOUGHT THAT WAS AN INCREDIBLY
[01:19] POWERFUL MOMENT.
[01:20] AS THEY START THEIR JOURNEY TO
[01:23] FOLLOW CHARLIE'S LEGACY AND HIS
[01:25] TEACHINGS OF THE GOSPEL, WHAT
[01:27] YOU TELL THE NEW BELIEVERS WHO
[01:30] ARE JUST STARTING THEIR JOURNEY.
[01:36] >> THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION, THE
[01:36] FIRST THING I WOULD TELL THEM
[01:37] THEY HAVE BEEN BORN AGAIN NOW
[01:39] YOU HAVE TO GET TO A BIBLE
[01:42] BELIEVING CHURCH, PLUG INTO IT
[01:46] AND THE BIBLE SAYS IT COMES FROM
[01:47] THE WORD OF GOD AND I HAVE TO
[01:50] TELL YOU CHARLIE'S LEGACY.
[01:52] I'M A MINISTER, THAT'S MY
[01:53] CALLING IN LIFE NOW I THINK I
[01:58] NEED TO RUN FOR POLITICS BECAUSE
[01:59] ALL THE POLITICIANS WERE
[01:59] PREACHING THE GOSPEL.
[02:00] IT WAS AN AMAZING DAY.
[02:02] JOEY: ON THAT TOPIC, THIS IS THE
[02:05] FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE THAT WE'VE
[02:09] HAD HOURS, HOURS OF NATIONAL
[02:12] NEWS POINTED TOWARDS THE STAGE
[02:15] THAT WAS ALMOST HOLY ABOUT GOD,
[02:16] CHRISTIANITY SPECIFICALLY, WHAT
[02:17] DOES THAT MEAN FOR OUR COUNTRY
[02:19] AND NOT JUST CHARLIE'S LEGACY
[02:21] BUT WHAT WE DO MOVING FORWARD.
[02:27] >> CHARLIE UNDERSTOOD THE
[02:27] HISTORY OF OUR NATION AS JOHN
[02:31] ADAMS SAID ONLY MORAL AND
[02:32] RELIGIOUS PEOPLE CAN GOVERN
[02:35] REPUBLIC.
[02:35] THIS DESIGN OF GOVERNMENT WAS
[02:36] ESTABLISHED TO GIVE PEOPLE THE
[02:37] FREEDOM OF SPEECH, THE FREEDOM
[02:38] OF THE RELIGION, THE FREEDOM TO
[02:42] ASSEMBLE FOR GRIEVANCES THAT'S
[02:43] WHAT CHARLIE UNDERSTOOD.
[02:47] HE WAS IN A SENSE OF MOSES THAT
[02:49] HE REAWAKEN AN ENTIRE GENERATION
[02:50] OF YOUNG PEOPLE THAT HAVE BEEN
[02:52] INDOCTRINATED TO HATE AMERICA
[02:55] AND TO THINK OUR FOUNDERS WERE
[02:58] AWFUL.
[02:58] NOW THEY'VE AWAKENED TO THE
[02:59] BEAUTY OF THE FORM OF GOVERNMENT
[03:00] YET ANOTHER EXCITED ABOUT IT,
[03:03] THAT'S WHAT CHARLIE DID I SAID
[03:07] IN THE MESSAGE THAT THEY SHARED.
[03:08] PEOPLE SAID CHARLIE WAS TOO
[03:09] POLITICAL.
[03:10] POLITICS WAS AN ON-RAMP FOR A
[03:13] RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LORD.
[03:18] IF HE COULD GET THE YOUNG PEOPLE
[03:19] ROWING IN THE STREAMS OF LIBERTY
[03:20] AND COME TO THE SOURCE WHICH IS
[03:21] THE LORD.
[03:22] TOMI: PASTOR MCCOY I LOVE THAT
[03:25] QUOTE IS STRUCK ME WHEN YOU WERE
[03:26] GIVEN YOUR REMARKS.
[03:26] I CAN'T HELP BUT THINK, HOW DOES
[03:28] THIS AFFECT CHRISTIANS FOR A
[03:29] VERY LONG TIME I FEEL THAT
[03:34] PEOPLE HAVE DISSUADED CHRISTIANS
[03:35] FROM ENTERING INTO THE SO-CALLED
[03:36] CULTURE WAR AND THE CULTURAL
[03:42] BATTLES IN THE POLITICAL ARENA.
[03:43] SO MUCH OF CHARLIE'S LIFE PROVES
[03:43] THAT CHRISTIANS CAN AND SHOULD
[03:44] ENGAGE IN THAT ARENA.
[03:49] >> I WOULD ALSO BLAME THE
[03:49] PASTORS IN AMERICA OURS WAS THE
[03:56] FIRST CHURCH CHARLIE PREACHED
[03:57] AT.
[03:57] I INVITED HIM TO SPEAK AND HE
[03:58] SAID I DON'T SPEAK IN CHURCHES
[03:59] AND I SAID WHY NOT.
[04:02] THEY THINK I'M TOO POLITICAL AND
[04:03] I SAID POLITICS IS THE HIGHEST
[04:04] FORM OF COMMUNITY.
[04:05] IT COMBINES MORALITY WITH
[04:07] SOCIABILITY.
[04:07] IF GOD DIDN'T WANT US IN
[04:11] POLITICS HE WOULDN'T HAVE
[04:11] INVENTED MARRIAGE.
[04:12] YOU HAVE TO HAVE RULES TO LIVE
[04:14] WITH.
[04:14] IF YOU'RE GOING TO LOVE YOUR
[04:15] NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF THEN YOU'RE
[04:17] GOING TO ENGAGE IN THE PUBLIC
[04:19] SQUARE FOR THE SAKE OF THEIR
[04:22] FAMILIES.
[04:22] I SAID CHARLIE, THAT'S EXACTLY
[04:23] WHERE YOU SHOULD BE BECAUSE
[04:26] PASTORS HAVE JUNKIE DID THE
[04:30] GOSPEL WHICH IS AN EARLY HERESY
[04:31] SEPARATING THE.
[04:32] FROM THE TAINTED SO POLITICS IS
[04:34] DIRTY.
[04:34] MY COMMENT TO THEM THE CHURCH IS
[04:38] DIRTY, WHAT YOUR POINT YOUR LIFE
[04:41] IS DIRTY AND YOU'RE WORKING ON
[04:45] THAT WHY WOULD YOU CONTEND FOR
[04:46] YOUR NEIGHBOR'S CHILDREN IN THE
[04:47] PUBLIC SQUARE AT THE SCHOOL
[04:48] BOARD MEETINGS.
[04:48] THAT'S WHAT CHARLIE DID FOR
[04:49] THESE YOUNG PEOPLE, THEY SAW
[04:50] THAT.
[04:50] HE BELIEVED IN THEIR FUTURE IN
[04:52] AMERICA WHERE THEY COULD RAISE A
[04:53] FAMILY.
[04:54] HAVE KIDS AND MOST IMPORTANTLY
[04:56] FREELY WORSHIP GOD WITHOUT ALL
[04:59] OF THE CENSORSHIP AND ALL THE
[05:03] MISERY.
[05:04] THAT'S WHAT CHARLIE DID FOR THIS
[05:05] GENERATION.
[05:05] WHEN PEOPLE SHOW UP AT CHURCH ON
[05:06] SUNDAY AND YOU SAID NOTHING
[05:09] ABOUT LAST SUNDAY, YOU MIGHT
[05:10] WANT TO ASK THEM WHY THEY'RE
[05:13] THERE AND THEY'RE GOING TO SAY
[05:19] CHARLIE KIRK.
[05:19] YOU MIGHT WANT TO LEARN A LITTLE
[05:20] BIT ABOUT HIS LIFE PASTOR
[05:21] BECAUSE HE'S THE ONE THAT THE
[05:22] LORD USED TO CREATE THE
[05:23] AWAKENING IN AMERICA.
[05:23] >> IT IS KEVIN COURT, THANK YOU
[05:24] FOR YOUR TIME.
[05:24] I WANT TO READ THIS AS WE TALK
[05:26] ABOUT ERIKA KIRK IN THE MOMENT
[05:27] THAT STRUCK ME PERSONALLY
[05:35] CLASSIEST 31217.
[05:36] GOD'S CHOSEN PEOPLE HOLY AND
[05:37] DEARLY LOVED CLOTHES YOURSELF
[05:37] WITH COMPASSION, KINDNESS,
[05:40] HUMILITY, GENTLENESS AND
[05:41] PATIENCE, BEAR WITH EACH OTHER
[05:42] AND FORGIVE ONE ANOTHER IF ANY
[05:42] OF YOU HAS A GRIEVANCE AGAINST
[05:44] SOMEONE AS THE LORD HAS FORGIVEN
[05:46] YOU SO YOU MUST ALSO FORGIVE
[05:51] THAT WAS A TOUGH PILL TO SWALLOW
[05:52] FOR SO MANY OF US AFTER WE SAW
[05:57] WHAT HAPPENED TO CHARLIE I
[05:58] WATCHED ERIKA LISTEN TO HER
[06:00] TODAY IT HIT CLOSE TO HOME
[06:01] PERSONALLY, HOW DOES IT STRIKE
[06:04] YOU.
[06:05] >> AMEN.
[06:06] IT WAS DIVINE.
[06:08] THERE'S NO EXPLANATION FOR ERIKA
[06:11] HAVING SUCH STRENGTH RIGHT NOW
[06:13] OTHER THAN A SUPERNATURAL
[06:14] BLESSING FROM GOD.
[06:17] SHE HAS BEEN A LIONESS IN THE
[06:18] MIDST OF THIS.
[06:22] A LOT OF REVIEWERS PROBABLY
[06:23] DON'T KNOW JIM ELLIOTT BUT HE
[06:23] WAS MARTYRED IN THE 20th
[06:26] CENTURY IN AT START OF THE
[06:27] LARGEST MISSION MOVEMENT IN THE
[06:29] WORLD.
[06:29] HIS WIDOW ELIZABETH ELLIOTT
[06:33] ENDED UP BECOMING A FIXTURE.
[06:34] ERIKA KIRK IS A MODERN ELIZABETH
[06:39] ELLIOTT.
[06:39] SHE'S GOING TO TAKE THIS NATION
[06:40] TO A PLACE OF FAITH AND
[06:41] UNDERSTAND THE MOST IMPORTANT
[06:45] PRINCIPLE.
[06:46] WHEN WE COME TO CHRIST WE
[06:47] REALIZE A MULTITUDE OF OUR SINS.
[06:48] HIS BLOOD COVERED US FROM PAST,
[06:51] PRESENT AND FUTURE.
[06:54] ERIKA UNDERSTOOD THAT.
[06:55] SHE DUG DEEP IN THE WORD SHE
[06:59] SAID SHE MEANT.
[06:59] LET ME SAY SOMETHING TO YOUR
[07:01] VIEWERS.
[07:01] FORGIVENESS IS NOT FORGETTING IS
[07:07] PUTTING THE CONSEQUENCES IN THE
[07:08] HANDS OF GOD AND MOVING ON WITH
[07:09] YOUR LIFE AND SHE ALSO LET THAT
[07:14] GO AND SHE DOES NOT LAY AWAKE
[07:15] WANTING REVENGE AND SHE LET IT
[07:16] GO GAVE IT TO THE LORD AND HE IS
[07:20] BEFORE THE LORD WHATEVER HE
[07:21] FACES IN THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM IS
[07:21] THE CASE.
[07:22] WE HAVE LAWS IN THE NATION.
[07:26] ERIKA HAS NO ILL WILL TOWARDS
[07:28] HER SHE'S GIVEN THAT TO THE
[07:29] BOARD THAT IS A GIFT FROM GOD.
[07:32] >> SO GLAD YOU SAID THAT
[07:32] BITTERNESS AND UNFORGIVENESS IS
[07:33] LIKE DRINKING POISON AND
[07:34] EXPECTING SOMEBODY ELSE TO PASS
[07:35] AWAY FROM IT, LET GO OF THAT.
[07:38] SHE DID IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL TO
[07:41] WATCH.
[07:41] >> PASTOR ROB QUITE, THANK YOU
