Paul Murray Reflects on Charlie Kirk's Legacy, Family, and Megyn Kelly's Raw On-Air Reaction

Paul Murray, host of Paul Murray Live on Sky News Australia, joins a conversation about Charlie Kirk's death, comparing the grief felt by millions around the world to the loss of generational, Titanic figures of the 1960s. Murray talks about Kirk's deliberate choice to keep his campus events open and unguarded as part of his commitment to public debate, a choice that created the vulnerability ultimately exploited by his killer. He shares details from Kirk's friend and Real America's Voice co-host Jack Posobiec about how Kirk reserved Saturdays exclusively for his wife, Erika, and their young children, no matter the demands of his public life, and reflects on a July 4th tribute Erika posted celebrating her husband's love of country. Murray also discusses Kirk's role in building a Turning Point USA-driven get-out-the-vote operation credited with helping turn out young voters for Donald Trump in 2024.

Paul Murray Reflects on Charlie Kirk's Global Impact

Paul Murray, host of Paul Murray Live on Sky News Australia, joins the program to discuss the significance of Charlie Kirk's death at age 31.

"I think to millions of people around the world, the impact of this is going to be similar to the feelings of people around the Titanic figures of the 1960s," Murray says, clarifying he isn't suggesting a literal monument, but pointing to how Kirk validated and channeled the thoughts, feelings, and politics of millions of people, particularly through his willingness to debate all comers on university campuses during what Murray calls "peak woke."

"A Commitment to the Debate" That Created a Vulnerability

Murray references comments from Kirk's friend, colleague, and Real America's Voice co-host Jack Posobiec, who described Kirk as aware of the security risks posed by his open, unguarded events but unwilling to put up a physical barrier between himself and the public.

"That commitment to the debate has created a vulnerability that some bastard has used to kill him," Murray says, describing the trauma felt by people who saw Kirk as a generational figure who connected their values to their politics.

Erika Kirk's Fourth of July Tribute

The conversation turns to a tribute Kirk's wife, Erika, posted on July 4th of this year, celebrating her husband's love of country.

"On days like today, when the skies erupt in red, white, and blue, and the air hums with the sound of freedom, I find myself especially grateful for the man I call my husband," Erika wrote, adding, "Today, I thank God for freedom. I thank God for the gift of this nation. And I thank God for a husband who day in and day out gives everything he has to defend it. Happy birthday, America. May we never take you for granted. I love you, Charlie Kirk."

A Father Who Reserved Saturdays for Family

Murray shares a detail from Jack Posobiec about how strictly Kirk separated his public and private life despite an otherwise relentless schedule.

"Saturdays were exclusively for family. If it was urgent, you contacted his wife, but you knew to stay away on Saturday," Murray says. "While he gave all of the rest of the week to the cause, to the public, that time was with his family... It didn't matter, the president wasn't going to call him. He wasn't going to be distracted. It was about your family."

Building a Movement That Helped Reelect Trump

Murray credits Kirk with building far more than an online following, pointing to Turning Point USA's role in the 2024 election.

"He built a machine that was able to put Trump back as president," Murray says, noting that Turning Point USA was hired directly by the Trump campaign to run get-out-the-vote efforts, contributing to a surge in young, particularly Gen Z, Republican voters.

Megyn Kelly's Raw, Live Reaction

Murray turns to Megyn Kelly, a close friend of Kirk who was scheduled to travel with him in the coming weeks, describing her live, unscripted reaction to the news as it broke.

"There's no way he survived that. The only good thing is it had to have happened quickly," Kelly says in the clip played during the segment.

Murray describes watching Kelly process the news in real time, without cutaways or prepared statements, at one point saying on her own livestream that she hoped the video wasn't even true. He says approaching the conversation with Kelly felt personal, given their friendship, and notes she planned to discuss the security risks of public events going forward.

Frustration With Media Coverage and Online Reactions

Murray expresses frustration with coverage that reduces Kirk to a "right-wing activist" without acknowledging the broader scope of his influence, and criticizes the tone of some media reporting and online reactions to his death.

"No one deserves to die for talking about what they believe in," Murray says. "The fact that you see in the reporting the lack of humanity, you see on Twitter the lack of humanity... that is a moment of dark, dark regret."
