Sean Ellingson Shares How In-N-Out Burger Defied California Tyranny and Stood Against Vaccine Mandates

Sean Ellingson, leadership figure at In-N-Out Burger, shares the powerful story of how his family's company became the largest corporation in California to stand against government vaccine mandates. In this conversation with Charlie Kirk and Rob, Sean opens up about his personal journey from military service and overcoming molestation and addiction to finding faith and leading alongside his wife Lindsay. He reveals the risks they took, including potential arrest, when they refused to force employees to take COVID shots, resulting in the closure of their Fisherman's Wharf location. Sean also discusses the Army of Love ministry, their commitment to combating child sex trafficking, and how the Holy Spirit guides their high-stakes business decisions while maintaining In-N-Out's Christian values.

Standing Against California's COVID Tyranny

Sean Ellingson took the stage to share an extraordinary story of faith, courage, and corporate leadership during one of the most challenging periods in recent American history. As a leadership figure at In-N-Out Burger, Sean and his wife Lindsay made the bold decision to refuse compliance with California's vaccine mandates for their employees, making In-N-Out the largest corporation in California to take such a stand.

The decision came with significant consequences. The company had to close their Fisherman's Wharf location based on principle alone. But for Sean and Lindsay, the choice was clear. As Sean explained, their awareness of what had been happening—the circumventing of legal processes for vaccine development and the broader issues at play—informed their conviction to protect their roughly 35,000 associates from being forced to take an mRNA shot.

Rob, speaking from the audience, emphasized the significance of this stand: "You were the largest corporation in California to stand against the Tyranny. Mom and Pops did. In our County alone, 65 percent of our small businesses will never reopen because they were obliterated and no large corporation stood but In-N-Out did. That empowered so many small businesses. That was a shock wave that turned the governor."

A Warrior Wife Willing to Go to Jail

Sean spoke with deep admiration about his wife Lindsay's courage during this critical time. As they discussed the potential consequences of their decision, Lindsay brought up a sobering possibility: "What if I get arrested?" She wasn't being dramatic—she genuinely said, "I'll go to jail."

Sean recalled his honest reaction: "I'm thinking, well gosh I got to take care of the kids. I mean that was the reality of what really was going through my head. I'm like oh boy, school, I gotta do all this stuff. But if that's really what you want to do, I'll support you." He emphasized that Lindsay really was willing to sacrifice to that extent to stand for principle.

"She just has this boldness inside of her and not everyone does and I understand that," Sean said. "But we need to find those people and we need to empower them. We need to equip these people so that they can take the leadership inside of the body of Christ. I think we're lacking that. I think we expect one person to do everything and that's just not the case."

From Military Service to Meeting Lindsay

Sean's path to In-N-Out and to Lindsay was marked by personal struggle and divine timing. He served in the United States Army, but his family faced tragedy during that time. His brother was on heroin on the streets right before Sean left the military, and his other younger brother had passed away from drugs.

After leaving the military, Sean met Lindsay through a dating app. Coming from humble beginnings, he quickly realized the unique position he was walking into. "I grew up with not much," Sean shared. "Coming into the relationship with her and then finding out who she was and realizing what I was kind of walking into, I really wanted to make sure that God made it clear to me if I was supposed to pursue it or not."

Lindsay had already been very strong in her faith, and Sean started attending Bible study with her. He recognized early on his role: "I kind of knew going into the relationship that I wasn't going to bring—you know, I'm not going to pay the bills, I'm not going to get a job that's going to pay more than what she's bringing to the family. And so I kind of recognized early on that I was supposed to be a spiritual leader in her life and in my kids' lives, in my family."

Healing from Childhood Trauma Through Faith

One of the most powerful moments of Sean's testimony came when he opened up about being molested as a child. It was Lindsay's persistent love and a word of knowledge from the Holy Spirit that helped him confront this dark chapter of his life.

"It really took Lindsay pushing in and having a word of knowledge from the Holy Spirit and speaking into an area of my life that was dark and I was trying to pretend wasn't there," Sean explained. "But she was relentless and she kept pushing in and because of that I faced the reality that okay, this isn't her—this is somebody that knows who I am."

Despite his fear of acknowledging what had happened, when Sean finally told Lindsay about the abuse, he experienced a profound encounter with God. "I felt so singled out in this world by God. I felt so loved by God," he said. This experience of healing became central to the Army of Love ministry that he and Lindsay would lead together.

The Army of Love Ministry

A few years before Sean and Lindsay met, Lindsay had a vision from God to start a ministry called the Army of Love. The 501(c)(3) status didn't get approved for years, but remarkably, it was approved just a week after Sean and Lindsay got married—a confirmation for them to pursue this ministry together.

"Our vision is to unite the body of Christ to set the captives free and to just equip the body of Christ to heal brokenhearted and hurting people," Sean explained. The ministry offers a discipleship program completely free to churches, asking nothing in return. They simply want to support the body of Christ.

The Army of Love has deployed significant resources toward finding the lost and helping the lost, with particular focus on ending child sex trafficking. Sean emphasized his belief in "transformational ministry and healing and counseling and allowing people to truly feel the presence and the power and the love of God."

The ministry has worked with various organizations across the nation from different denominations. Sean shared wisdom from his pastor who oversees one of these specific organizations: "It doesn't matter where they're from. If we can find common ground in certain areas, the Holy Spirit will work like a golden thread and work his way in and around and navigate through all of those differences which can be so divisive. But the Holy Spirit can do it."

In-N-Out's Christian Heritage

Many people don't realize the deep Christian roots of In-N-Out Burger. The company has a long Christian line, with bible verses printed on every single item. The Harvest Crusades with Greg Laurie were funded by the family, demonstrating their commitment to ministry and evangelism.

Sean and Lindsay's commitment to their employees reflects Christian capitalist principles. As Rob noted, they "take care of your employees, you follow a capitalistic Christian principle of providing for your employees unlike any other business I know of in California."

The company maintains strict standards for freshness—every In-N-Out Burger must be located close enough to have fresh meat delivered, and all ingredients have to be fresh. This commitment to quality limits their distribution but ensures protection of what goes into customers' bodies. As Rob pointed out, this physical principle mirrors the spiritual principle of seeking fresh manna from God's word daily.

Holy Spirit-Led Leadership

When asked about how the Holy Spirit plays into their leadership decisions, Sean described their spiritual disciplines: "We fast, we pray. We're actively involved with our church. We have a Monday night study group that we lead that we've been a part of for many years now."

He emphasized the importance of recognizing the need for the body of Christ—the eldership and the council. "The unity is so important. The Holy Spirit will reveal and lead us, but sometimes we're not so keen to following his lead or recognizing where he's leading us or what he's saying to us. And for that we need the rest of the body of Christ."

Sean shared that everything in his life personally, he couldn't do without the leading and guidance from the Holy Spirit. "There's so many crazy things going on in the world today and it is so multifaceted, it's just so hard to keep track of everything, to know how to navigate it all. And I'll tell you right now that everything in my life personally I couldn't do without the leading and the guidance from the Holy Spirit."

Living by Scripture

When asked how the word of God helped him through overcoming drug addiction, molestation, and other challenges, Sean pointed to his life verse: "One of my life verses is Mark 12:30 or Matthew 22:37—to love God with everything we have and to love our neighbor. For me, that's just the driving force on staying on track. If those are the two ultimate commandments that fulfill everything else, I've got to stay on track with that."

He explained how God's living word guides his daily life: "As I'm praying or reading and somebody comes on my mind as I'm reading something, I'm going to share that verse with them or whatever it is. Those are just kind of the things that help navigate my life."

Expanding to Tennessee and Beyond

In-N-Out Burger continues to grow, with plans to expand to Tennessee in a couple more years. Despite California's hostile environment, the company maintains its principles and continues to draw massive crowds—even at 9:00 PM at night in Santa Barbara, there are lines around the block.

When asked how the audience could pray for him, Sean's request was simple: "Just the protection—protection over my family, my kids."

Rob closed the conversation with a prayer: "Lord thank you for Sean, thank you for Lindsay. We do pray for protection for them. We pray for wisdom. If any man lacks wisdom all we need but do is ask of you God. Thank you for the way in which you've used them and the way in which you've blessed them. And Lord, he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. They have refreshed us. We just prayed double blessing on them."
