Charlie Kirk Declares Culture War at CPAC: America's Next Generation Faces Choice Between Freedom and Socialism
Charlie Kirk addressed CPAC attendees with a warning about the growing socialist movement on college campuses and the cultural battle facing America's next generation. As founder of Turning Point USA, now present on 1,400 high school and college campuses, Kirk argues that the left has revealed its true contempt for America under Donald Trump's presidency. He challenges the conservative assumption that liberals "mean well," pointing to issues from abortion to Iran policy as evidence of fundamentally different visions for America's future. Kirk frames the upcoming 2020 election as the most important culture war in American history, asking whether America will be a place for victims or victors, socialism or freedom.
Charlie Kirk reflected on his sixth CPAC appearance, noting that his first was in 2013 when Turning Point USA consisted of just five or six people. The organization has since grown into a nationwide grassroots student activist movement present on 1,400 high school and college campuses across the country. Beyond building Turning Point USA, Kirk spends his time traveling the country speaking on college campuses, often alongside Candace Owens, whom he praised for doing more to move the black community to conservative values in the last year than anyone has done in the last 30 years.
Students Not Opposed, Just Never Exposed
Kirk explained that students are not inherently opposed to conservative ideas—they've simply never been exposed to them in the first place. The left has done everything possible to ensure the current generation has never heard why America is the greatest country ever to exist, why free markets are the most moral and effective economic system ever discovered, why the Constitution is the greatest political document ever written, or why abortion after birth is immoral and should be rejected in a modern and decent society.
Trump Has Revealed, Not Changed, the Left
One of Donald Trump's greatest contributions, according to Kirk, is that he has not changed the left but revealed them. This is who they have always been—they have always hated this country and had contempt for America's history. Kirk challenged the common conservative refrain that liberals want the same thing but just have a different way of getting there. He emphatically stated he does not want to live in the country that the socialist left wants to create, particularly one where it's okay to execute a newborn child. Conservatives and the Democrat Party are not heading to the same destination by different routes—they have two completely different destinations in mind.
The Left Does Not Mean Well
Kirk declared he is sick and tired of giving liberals the benefit of the doubt by saying they mean well. If you want to fundamentally transform and destroy this country from within, you do not mean well and do not have good intentions whatsoever. He provided a comprehensive list of positions that demonstrate bad intentions:
Suppressing conservatives from coming on college campuses
Deplatforming conservatives from social media
Continuing to give $500 million a year to Planned Parenthood
Standing against Israel
Giving money to the Palestinian Authority
Giving hundreds of millions of dollars to the mullahs in Iran
Listening to Michael Cohen spew lies rather than applauding the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula
When We Fight, We Win
Kirk emphasized that if there's one thing President Trump has taught the conservative movement, it's that when we fight, we win. For the last 30 years, it seems conservatives have been afraid to fight. The one fight that brought the movement together was the attempted public character assassination of now-Justice Brett Kavanaugh, when the left did everything possible to destroy a decent man and his family based on 30-year-old lies, expecting everyone to dismiss his amazing judicial record.
The Left's New Strategy: Attack Trump from Within
Looking ahead to the 2020 cycle, Kirk warned that the left knows their attacks from the middle are not working. They will now try to attack Donald Trump from within the conservative movement itself, claiming he did not fulfill his promises or do what he said he would do. Kirk noted that if you want to get love from the left, be a conservative that attacks Donald Trump. If you want to get on the mainstream networks, be a conservative that writes against this president. If you want to get published in the best newspapers, be a conservative that attacks the most conservative president in our generation.
Those who decide to stand and defend the president face tough consequences—article after article written about them. But if you want to be loved, get invited to cocktail parties, and receive compliments on Twitter, then sure, attack the president. However, Kirk insisted the conservative movement should never try to appease the left just to be beloved. Instead, conservatives must do what is right, do what is correct, and stand for truth.
The Most Conservative President in American History
Kirk declared this is the most conservative president since Ronald Reagan, if not in American history, and he has done everything he said he would do. For years at CPAC, Kirk heard people wishing for someone who would:
Stand up against Iran
Move the embassy
Cut corporate taxes
Appoint more conservatives to the judicial bench
Deregulate the economy
Rebuild the military
Take immigration seriously
Stand for the flag
Call out the relationship between big business, big government, and big tech
According to Kirk, America now has that president, and he's fighting for the country every single day.
What's Coming from the Next Generation
Kirk is frequently asked what he sees coming from the next generation. Traveling the country and visiting college campuses, he sees both concerns and reasons for optimism. While the socialist movement is growing, there's also a growing conservative movement that understands the left. If you're a campus conservative who stays conservative for four years—whether part of Turning Point USA or other organizations—you understand exactly who the left is.
Kirk envisions a conservative movement that will:
Stand for the dignity of all people—unborn, pre-born, newly born, all people
Be thankful to live in America, not angry to live in America
Stand with Israel
Fight the left, not the way they fight conservatives (pointing to Hayden Williams getting punched in the face at UC Berkeley for tabling for Turning Point USA with the Leadership Institute), but by fighting in cultural institutions
Politics Flows Downstream from Culture
Kirk referenced Andrew Breitbart's observation that politics flows downstream from culture. Given the choice between more control in politics or culture, Kirk would choose culture in an instant because politics is short-term while culture is long-term. The left has done tremendous corrosion in society in the cultural realm, where students are being taught there's no such thing as objective truth, that you are your own truth, that there's no such thing as right and wrong, and you can create your own right and wrong. This all stems from the universities.
The Socialist Invasion of Congress
For years, Kirk tried to warn the conservative base that there would be a socialist under the age of 35 who would come to Congress and try to make these ideas mainstream. Some people laughed at him. Now they're here, and there's more than one of them. What happens on campus will soon come to Congress—college campuses are a harbinger of things to come, the leading indicator of exactly the ideology and viewpoints that will soon be held mainstream in media, pop culture, and Congress.
The Fight That Will Make or Break Western Civilization
The fight Kirk has decided to engage in is one that will either make or break Western Civilization. If the next generation—Generation Z—has contempt for America, it doesn't matter if they want high or low taxes. If there's a generation that hates this country and believes it's racist, misogynistic, and homophobic, all the rest is irrelevant. Kirk argued that if you think you're oppressed because you live in America, you're wrong—you have to be taught that you're oppressed.
The Defining Question of 2020
In closing, Kirk emphasized that Americans have one of the greatest blessings ever: living in this country at this time. There's a culture war brewing right now, different from those of the 1980s and 1990s. It comes down to one fundamental question: What is America? Is America a place for victims or for victors? Is America a place where you can achieve your dreams or dwell in mediocrity? Is America a socialist place, or is America a place that embraces freedom and serves as a refuge for those who have fled totalitarian Marxist dictatorships? That will be the question of the 2020 election—the most important culture war in American history. And according to Kirk, conservatives will win.
