A Tragic Reality in Tennessee Schools
Tim Miller from the Bulwark addresses another devastating school shooting in Tennessee at Antioch High School. The incident left one student dead and another wounded, occurring not long after the Covenant School shooting that previously shocked the state. While school shootings have become disturbingly frequent, making it difficult to know when to weigh in, Miller explains this particular case warrants attention from a non-political lens because the shooter allegedly stated in his own writings that he was politically motivated.
The Influence of Far-Right Figures
According to reporting from the Nashville Banner, the shooter claimed his radicalization was influenced by several far-right figures, most notably Nick Fuentes and former Nashville resident Candace Owens. In the shooter's own words, he stated that Candace Owens influenced him above all others, writing that each time she spoke, he was stunned by her insights and that her views pushed him further into beliefs about violence regarding what he termed the Jewish question.
Nick Fuentes serves as the figurehead of a group called the Groypers, rooted in white identitarian ideology. This movement, emerging from the alt-right tradition, focuses heavily on racial politics, the racial makeup of the country, and represents a rare corner on the right that is hostile to Israel. Candace Owens occupies a similar space in this regard.
Candace Owens and The DailyWire+ Split
Miller wrote a profile on Owens about a year prior and spent considerable time listening to her podcast to understand the MAGA right. He found it notable that Ben Shapiro, who is Jewish and a Zionist, platformed her at the DailyWire+ for an extended period while she advanced talking points echoing anti-semitic quarters. She engaged in what Miller describes as dog whistling for those able to hear the frequency, something he believes Shapiro should have recognized.
The situation eventually reached a breaking point during the Israel-Palestine crisis, leading to Owens' departure from the DailyWire+. The split was essentially over her willingness to advance anti-semitic conspiracy theories, at least according to how the argument was framed. The fact that this online radicalism and dispute has now manifested offline in the very community where Owens was living serves as a stark reminder of how real these consequences are.
The Challenge of Calling Out Online Extremism
Miller highlights the persistent challenge in addressing racism, anti-semitism, and online radicalization. While Owens tends to be self-serious, figures like Fuentes often include a tinge of humor in their material, creating ambiguity about whether they're making racist jokes or genuinely expressing racist views. Are they truly suggesting that concentration camp death tolls were exaggerated, or are they pretending to think this as commentary on wokeism?
This tongue-in-cheek element creates tension for those trying to call it out. Questions arise about whether elevating these statements by mentioning them actually helps spread them, whether calling out racist jokes makes the critic seem foolish if the speaker claims it was just humor, or whether making accusations seems like an overreaction. These conversations played out around recent controversies, with critics of anti-semitism sometimes facing backlash when examples seemed ambiguous or exaggerated.
The social media discourse gets removed from real life consequences. In situations like the Antioch shooting, the stakes become clear. Not everybody is in on the joke. Some people take it seriously, and the tragic results demonstrate why this matters beyond online debates.
The Normalization of School Violence
Beyond the political elements, Miller emphasizes the human tragedy. He shares a clip from Tennessee Holler featuring a mother whose 16-year-old responded to the shooting by saying it's fine, it happens. When asked how that makes her feel as a mother, she responds that it breaks her heart that this has become normal, that it should not be normal.
Miller recently spoke with Cameron Kasky, who started March for Our Lives after surviving the Parkland shooting, and has been in conversation with other young people who experienced gun violence in their schools. One common thread stands out: the resignation. Young people have come to accept that this is just what happens, that they must simply live with this reality.
Refusing to Accept the Unacceptable
Miller acknowledges it's difficult to argue against this resignation, particularly looking at the next four years under the new administration where there appears to be no energy around additional regulations regarding school safety or guns. However, he insists these fights are long battles. His own views have been transformed on this issue, and he refuses to accept that school shootings are inevitable.
He stresses the importance of calling out this violence and not becoming numb to it, even as the tragedies pile up. Miller commits to continuing coverage of this issue and credits the Nashville Banner and Tennessee Holler for their reporting on the ground.

[00:00] hey guys this Tim Miller from the bwork
[00:01] uh wanted to weigh in on this tragic
[00:03] story out of Tennessee uh yet another
[00:06] school shooting not too long after the
[00:08] Covenant School shooting that rocked the
[00:10] state um this time it is at Antioch High
[00:14] School uh it happened yesterday morning
[00:16] Wednesday morning one student is dead
[00:19] and another is wounded in the shooting
[00:22] uh you know look unfortunately there's
[00:25] so many of these that sometimes it's
[00:27] like how do you know when to weigh in
[00:30] what to comment on um I I think that as
[00:32] we head into a new Administration when
[00:35] it seems like there's not going to be
[00:36] any energy around uh additional
[00:40] regulations regarding school safety
[00:42] regarding guns uh clearly there is some
[00:46] political uh salience here uh but I
[00:49] think in this particular case um it is
[00:51] worth weighing in on fromont political
[00:53] lens uh because the shooter himself uh
[00:57] has allegedly said in his own writings
[01:01] uh that he was politically motivated so
[01:03] I want to turn to this report from the
[01:06] Nashville Banner um just want to shout
[01:09] out the local Folks at Nashville banner
[01:10] and and at Tennessee holler my friends
[01:12] at the Tennessee holler who have been
[01:14] covering this um uh the Nashville Banner
[01:18] though has this uh he said the shooter
[01:21] said that his radicalization was in part
[01:23] due to a number of far-right figures
[01:24] including Nick Fuentes and former
[01:26] nashvillian Candice Owens quote Candace
[01:30] Owens has influenced Me Above All each
[01:33] time she spoke I was stunned by her
[01:35] insights and her own views helped push
[01:38] me further and further into the belief
[01:40] of violence over the Jewish question
[01:44] first on Fuentes I I assume most people
[01:46] watching this feed know but uh uh he is
[01:49] a
[01:50] farri
[01:52] um radical
[01:54] conspiracist um that uh is the
[01:57] figurehead of a group called The gers
[01:59] that
[02:00] um has a large strain of kind of white
[02:05] identitarianism um uh there's some sport
[02:08] of trump but uh you know a lot of uh
[02:11] what you see from the gers is from kind
[02:13] of this altright tradition uh that is
[02:16] focused a lot on racial politics
[02:19] whiteness makeup of the country um and
[02:22] it is a kind of a rare corner on the
[02:24] right that is uh pretty hostile to
[02:27] Israel um Candace Owens is another
[02:30] member of that rare Corner um you know I
[02:32] wrote a profile on her about a year ago
[02:35] now and um and used to spend a lot of
[02:38] time listening to Candace's podcast kind
[02:40] of get a sense what was happening on the
[02:42] magar right uh before she had a falling
[02:45] out with Ben Shapiro over these issues
[02:48] and it was kind of interesting that Ben
[02:49] Shapiro um who Jewish and a Zionist was
[02:52] platforming her at the daily wire for so
[02:54] long while she was you know kind of uh
[02:56] advancing a lot of you know sort of a
[03:00] lot of talking points that are um
[03:02] echoing of what you hear from
[03:05] anti-semitic quarters um you know she
[03:07] was doing a decent amount of dog
[03:09] whistling if you were um you able to
[03:13] hear the frequency which uh you would
[03:15] think Shapiro would have been uh but
[03:17] eventually this kind of reached ahead
[03:18] during the Israel Palestine crisis and
[03:21] um she left and so I haven't been
[03:23] following her um podcast as closely over
[03:25] the last year as I was but you know the
[03:28] fact that she gets pushed out of the
[03:30] daily wire basically over her
[03:33] willingness to advance um you know at
[03:36] some level anti-semitic conspiracy
[03:38] theories at least that was you know how
[03:40] that the argument was framed um and now
[03:44] to have this kind of
[03:47] online radicalism and online dispute
[03:52] come offline in the very Community where
[03:55] um she uh was
[03:57] living I you know I I just think it's a
[04:00] reminder about how real this stuff is
[04:03] and um this is always the challenge when
[04:05] you are talking about you kind of racism
[04:08] and anti-Semitism and radicalization
[04:11] online is that if you look at not really
[04:15] Candace Candace is pretty self- serious
[04:17] but if you look at the Nick fentis
[04:18] material there's always a tinge of humor
[04:21] to it right it's like am I doing a
[04:22] racist joke or am I being really racist
[04:25] right like do I think that you know that
[04:28] the um number of people died at the at
[04:31] at concentration camps was
[04:33] exaggerated or am I just you know kind
[04:36] of pretending to think that as some sort
[04:39] of broader commentary about how I don't
[04:41] like wokeism you know what I mean like
[04:42] they always do like many of them have
[04:45] this kind of tongue and cheek element to
[04:46] it and so I think that in turn then
[04:50] creates tension right about how people
[04:53] that are trying to call it out um do
[04:56] right you know there's this question of
[04:58] oh do I Elevate this
[05:00] um by mentioning it right do I does it
[05:04] make me seem stupid if I am calling
[05:06] somebody out for you know racist jokes
[05:09] if they're just saying oh it was just
[05:10] humor right um am I going overboard by
[05:13] making EXA EXA accusation right all
[05:16] these conversations were happening right
[05:17] around the must thing right like am i m
[05:20] uh you know there's this like backsplash
[05:23] that comes against the people that are
[05:24] trying to fight anti-Semitism you know
[05:27] if there are examples where it seems
[05:30] like you know they're seeing something
[05:32] that isn't there or they're exaggerating
[05:33] it or they're or they're you know not
[05:35] not laughing with the boys at the locker
[05:38] room talk right all you know all this
[05:41] stuff gets removed from real life in the
[05:43] conversation on social media and in a
[05:46] situation like this you see why it
[05:50] matters like why there is real life
[05:53] consequences you know um because not
[05:57] everybody is in on the joke
[06:00] some people are in on the joke and are
[06:02] and are taking it
[06:03] seriously and um you know it's just so
[06:07] tragic that this appears to be one of
[06:10] these you know uh one of these
[06:12] situations um at least according to the
[06:14] reporting that we're getting early
[06:15] obviously a lot of this stuff uh
[06:17] develops we'll continue to monitor
[06:19] monitor if there's new kind of
[06:21] information that comes out and the other
[06:22] thing I want to share that my friends at
[06:24] Tennessee holler shared just about this
[06:26] tragic
[06:27] situation um is this uh this clip uh
[06:31] from from a mother of a a teen at school
[06:33] it's fine Mom it
[06:37] happens it should it though it's my
[06:40] 16-year-old is like oh it's fine Mom it
[06:42] happens um and as a mom how does it make
[06:46] you feel to hear that it breaks my
[06:49] heart it breaks my heart that it's
[06:52] normal it should not be normal that's
[06:55] the other thing that's sad about this to
[06:57] me right like there's the political
[06:58] element of this but there's also just
[06:59] the human element um I've been uh you
[07:04] know I don't know if you saw but I did
[07:05] another video with Cam casky uh who
[07:08] started March for our lives after
[07:10] Parkland um where he he was there at
[07:12] Parkland during that mass shooting I was
[07:14] talking to him yester uh the other day
[07:16] and and I've been talking to a bunch a
[07:17] couple of other um folks that are
[07:19] younger that at some level uh
[07:22] experienced um gun violence in their
[07:25] schools and and one thing that is just
[07:29] apparent in having these conversations
[07:32] is just the resignation you know the
[07:34] resignation that you see from that uh
[07:36] from the story that that mother tells
[07:38] about her uh 16-year-old right that this
[07:41] is just kind of what happens like we
[07:43] just have to accept this
[07:47] um I mean it's kind of hard to argue
[07:49] against that particularly if you look
[07:50] over the next four years given the new
[07:52] Administration we have then in but um
[07:55] these fights are long these battles are
[07:58] long it is one that I have been um
[08:01] transformed by um in My Views and I
[08:04] don't think this is something we have to
[08:05] accept and I think it is important to
[08:07] call it out and not just get numb to it
[08:10] and so we will continue to monitor it
[08:12] here um you can subscribe to the feed
[08:14] thanks again to the folks of the
[08:15] Nashville banner and Tennessee holler
[08:16] doing the reporting on the ground uh and
[08:19] we'll talk to you guys again soon
