Why Reading Both Milton Friedman and The Communist Manifesto Made Me a Better Thinker
Growing up with left-leaning curriculum, discovering free market economics transformed how I think. But the real breakthrough came from studying both sides deeply, not just skimming opposing viewpoints, but genuinely understanding them. From Milton Friedman and F. A. Hayek to the Communist Manifesto, learning to argue for capitalism as convincingly as socialism didn't weaken my beliefs, it strengthened them. Too many young people today only get exposed to one perspective, which robs them of the critical thinking skills needed to form genuine convictions. The answer isn't avoiding uncomfortable ideas; it's engaging with them head-on. Whether you lean left or right, challenging your assumptions with opposing literature won't make you worse off, it will make you sharper, more informed, and intellectually honest.

The Education Gap: Only Hearing One Side
If I were in high school—which wasn't too long ago—I would highly suggest first and foremost reading all sides. And when I mean all sides, I mean all sides. I grew up learning curriculum and books and literature more on the left. Then I discovered Milton Friedman. I discovered F.A. Hayek. I discovered Ludwig von Mises. I discovered what I consider the great thinkers of the 20th century around free market economics. Adam Smith, of course, before that.
The Power of Understanding Every Argument
My suggestion is just get aware of all sides. Be able to argue the argument for capitalism as well as you can for socialism, because I sure could when I was in high school and I still can. I came to the conclusion that capitalism is the greatest system ever discovered by man. And that's okay. I know people that ended up on the other side far too often. I think young people don't get exposed to both sides, which I think is too unfortunate.
Challenge Your Beliefs, Strengthen Your Mind
My big advice is this: if you've read all the Milton Friedman stuff, read all the stuff on the left. Read the social justice books. Even read the Communist Manifesto. Read that stuff. Challenge your opinion. But if you've read all the stuff on the left and you think you got it all, open up a Milton Friedman book. You might not agree with it. It might make you uncomfortable, but my suggestion would definitely make you think. And you won't be worse off for it. Definitely.
Open Your Mind to All Perspectives
So, open up your mind. Know all sides. That would be my suggestion and advice.
