The Security Failures Behind Charlie Kirk's Assassination

Security failures at Utah Valley University became one of the most scrutinized aspects of Charlie Kirk's assassination, starting with his own security director's public admission of what went wrong. Brian Harpole, founder of Integrity Security Solutions and Kirk's security chief, told the Shawn Ryan Show that he had specifically warned UVU police chief Jeff Long about unsecured rooftop access two days before the event and was told coverage would be handled, yet no officer was ever assigned to that position. The scale of the shortfall became clear by comparison: UVU deployed just six campus police officers plus two in plain clothes for roughly 3,000 attendees with no metal detectors, bag checks, or ticket verification, compared to the 60 officers who had monitored a prior California church appearance and more than a dozen who covered a crowd half the size at Illinois State University. A Change.org petition with nearly 1,000 signatures had specifically called for the UVU event to be canceled beforehand, adding to the questions raised once it emerged that the shooter accessed the exposed rooftop and remained there for roughly eight minutes with a clear sightline to Kirk before firing. Investigators including former Navy SEALs Rob O'Neal and Jim Foreman examined whether the posture reflected negligence or something more, though the admitted failure, an unsecured rooftop despite advance warning, remained the central fact underlying the tragedy.
