Anna Paulina Luna Testifies Before House Rules Committee on Resolution Honoring Charlie Kirk's Life
Representative Anna Paulina Luna delivered emotional testimony before the House Rules Committee urging passage of H.R. 719, a resolution honoring Charlie Kirk's life and legacy. Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and devout Christian, was assassinated in a targeted act of political violence on September 10th. Luna, a close friend of Kirk, called for the condemnation of dangerous political rhetoric and emphasized Kirk's commitment to faith, family, and peaceful political dialogue. The bipartisan hearing saw members from both parties condemn political violence and reflect on Kirk's impact on American discourse.
Representative Anna Paulina Luna appeared before the House Rules Committee, chaired by Chairwoman Fox with Ranking Member McGovern, to testify in support of H.R. 719, a resolution honoring the life and legacy of Charlie Kirk. Luna urged the committee to grant a prompt rule for House consideration of the legislation.
Luna described the events of September 10th as a "horrific tragedy" when Charlie Kirk—a courageous American patriot, devout Christian, dedicated husband, and father of two—had his life "tragically cut short in a targeted act of political violence." She explained that a deranged man, apparently radicalized by progressive left ideology, assassinated Kirk "for his family and the entire world to see."
Condemnation of Political Violence and Dangerous Rhetoric
In her testimony, Luna emphasized that dangerous rhetoric describing political opponents as oppressive fascists has reached a fever pitch. She noted that in the past year alone, there have been multiple attempts on President Trump's life, the murder of elected leaders in Minnesota, and now the killing of "a brave activist working tirelessly for peaceful political dialogue."
Luna stated firmly: "Such violence has no place in our country, especially political violence, regardless of the victim's political leanings. Full stop. No excuses, no qualifications." She called for condemnation of all attacks against fellow citizens regardless of political beliefs, emphasizing that American democracy depends on resolving political differences through spirited debate, the ballot box, and embracing the rule of law.
Charlie Kirk's Legacy
Luna characterized Kirk as "one of the most prolific conservative political minds of our time" and "a man committed to his faith, family, and this nation." She explained that he dedicated his life to protecting and defending the god-given rights enshrined in America's founding documents.
In closing her testimony, Luna urged Americans to honor Charlie by "hugging our loved ones a little tighter, expressing gratitude for their support, and embracing our faith a bit stronger, particularly when such an event may cause great stress."
Resolution Details and Bipartisan Support
Chairwoman Fox highlighted key provisions of the resolution, noting that it "calls upon all Americans regardless of race, party affiliation, or creed to reject political violence, recommit to respectful debate, uphold American values, and respect one another as fellow Americans."
Fox quoted a striking whereas clause from the Speaker's resolution: "Whereas Charlie Kirk would not have us respond to his death with despair, but rather with renewed purpose, to speak truth with courage, to stand firm in faith, to seek unity while standing firm in principle, and to serve as living reminders of the values he championed, faith, family, and freedom."
The resolution's operative language carries forward this message, resolving that Congress can respond with renewed purpose, speaking truth with courage, standing firm in faith, seeking unity while standing firm in principle, and serving as living reminders of faith, family, and freedom.
Security Concerns for Members of Congress
During her testimony, Luna also addressed a related security matter, noting that Representative Moscowitz has introduced amendment 5371, which she is co-sponsoring. The amendment calls for $250,000 for the MRI to be used for designated security personnel for members of Congress.
Luna explained: "I think it's incredibly important especially if the legislative branch and the executive branch is getting additional security that we consider that for members." She noted that Representative Jared Moscowitz had someone threatening to murder him, and she herself has someone serving federal prison time for threatening to murder her after fleeing to the Philippines.
Bipartisan Committee Response
Ranking Member McGovern acknowledged Luna's personal friendship with Kirk and expressed awareness of how hard the tragedy hit both Luna and Representative Roy. He thanked her for her testimony and stated that they all condemn this "terrible terrible tragedy."
Representative Fischbach from Minnesota connected Kirk's assassination to similar violence in her home state, referencing the assassination of Speaker Hortman and the attempted murder of Senator Hoffman. She emphasized the need to "recommit to treating each other with respect and stop the inflammatory language," noting that both Speaker Hortman and Kirk "treated people with that respect" and did "a wonderful job making sure that people felt heard."
Other committee members associated themselves with these remarks, with Representative Scanlon echoing the ranking member's comments, Representative Griffith calling it a "terrible event," and Representative Leger Fernandez emphasizing the importance of "condemning political violence of all kinds in every corner of America."
Personal Reflections on Kirk's Impact
Representative Jack testified that he worked with Kirk during his service for President Trump and stated there was "no greater advocate" than Kirk. He called the resolution "a wonderful testament to his legacy" and expressed hope for unanimous support.
Representative Norman shared a poignant note he received stating that Charlie Kirk died at 12:23, which coincides with John 12:23 about a kernel falling to the ground and the life that follows. He called it "very fitting."
Representative Roy delivered particularly emotional testimony, sharing that his son, also named Charlie, had become "quite enamored of" Kirk. Roy recounted how he protected his son from seeing the news on social media and broke it to him personally. When Roy told his son that Kirk had passed, his son responded that he "would love to have met him someday" and then sent his father 1 Corinthians 15:58: "Therefore my dear brothers and sisters stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain."
Roy stated this was "indicative in my view of the impact that Charlie will continue to have on a new generation who are recommitting themselves to the word of God and to the founding principle of this country."
Representative Scott concluded the testimony portion by echoing the sentiments expressed, calling it "a gut-wrenching day" and noting that "a lot of us will miss him." He expressed appreciation for Luna bringing the resolution and stated that Kirk's "work will continue."
Committee Proceedings
Following testimony, Chairwoman Fox recessed the hearing until after votes, as the committee had amendments to consider. The committee planned to reconvene after the last vote in the series to continue their work on the resolution.
