Standing at Ground Zero of a National Tragedy

Brian Entin reports live from Butler, Pennsylvania, standing at the exact location where former President Trump was shot. The building where the gunman positioned himself sits only 400 feet away, a chilling reminder of how close the nation came to catastrophe. What unfolded in Butler has sparked multiple investigations, congressional hearings, and the resignation of the Secret Service head who admitted it was a failure. A father lost his life, another man continues fighting for his, and the questions about what went wrong demand answers.

Security Failures Began Weeks Before the Rally

The law enforcement failures did not begin the day of the rally. A law enforcement source tells NewsNation the security plan developed by the Secret Service was fundamentally flawed from the start. According to sources, the building the gunman climbed was designated to be secured by local police, with a star on the plan explicitly indicating the local police department was responsible for securing the building despite its proximity to where the president was speaking.

Sources reveal the Secret Service did not show up for the final planning meeting, and their security perimeter was too small. The Butler Township Police Department, a small department with only about 12 full-time officers, was operating under a retiring chief with a lieutenant in charge. Sources close to the department say they were shocked when they learned they wouldn't be doing traffic control as expected, but instead would be in charge of securing the building.

Staffing Concerns and Last-Minute Requests

Staffing concerns emerged repeatedly in the investigation. NewsNation learned that on the day of the rally, the Secret Service requested an additional police officer, but Butler Township said they didn't have one available. During the rally itself, sources say local police officers were inside the building, not keeping an eye on the roof.

Sources agree that local officers were on the roof briefly, but because of the heat, they moved down to the ground. Another team of local officers remained inside the building. The House investigation discovered that the Secret Service and local police were not even able to communicate over their radios. There was very limited communication between the locals on the outer perimeter and the inner perimeter.

Rally Attendees Spotted the Gunman First

It appears people at the rally spotted the gunman even before police did. Witnesses noticed the shooter because people around them were talking about seeing someone on the rooftop. They saw a person in a grey shirt climbing up the metal roof on the building. Witnesses tried desperately to alert police, pointing out a guy crawling on the roof with a rifle slung over his shoulder, wondering why authorities were waiting so long to take action.

The Sniper Question: Why Didn't They Shoot First?

NewsNation obtained a photo with a timestamp of 6:04 PM, seven minutes before the shooting, showing snipers looking in the direction of the gunman. Another photo from 5:41 PM, even earlier, shows snipers looking at the roof. Sources within the Secret Service say the working theory is that the sniper did not initially shoot Thomas Crooks because the sniper thought Crooks was a police officer on the roof, which makes sense considering the original security plan designated local police for that building.

The Human Cost

More than 100 emergency vehicles from all over the region gathered in the small town to pay respect to Corey Comperatore, the father and former fire chief who died trying to protect his family. James Copenhaver and another victim remained in the hospital in serious condition at the time of the report. NewsNation learned that David Dutch was discharged from the hospital. Lives have been changed forever.

The Investigation Continues

The full FBI investigation continues, with NewsNation promising to maintain pressure on authorities to be transparent. Brian Entin pledges to continue digging for the truth in Butler, Pennsylvania, talking to sources every single day. The call goes out to whistleblowers to come forward with information, with assurance they can trust NewsNation to continue putting pressure on the authorities for answers.
