Charlie Kirk Opens AmericaFest 2023 With 13,000 Patriots Battling the Top-Down Revolution

Charlie Kirk launches AmericaFest in Phoenix, Arizona, with 13,000 attendees from all 50 states and 14 countries for the largest multi-day conservative gathering in American history. Kirk chronicles Turning Point USA's remarkable journey from a humble garage in Illinois to a powerhouse movement with 1,800 chapters, 600,000 student activists, and dominance across social media. He issues a rallying cry against the elites waging a cultural revolution, challenges the American church to reject woke ideology, and calls for a grassroots takeover of the Republican Party while demanding accountability from establishment leaders.

Welcome to AmericaFest: A Historic Gathering

Charlie Kirk welcomed 13,000 people to AmericaFest in Phoenix, Arizona, celebrating what he described as the largest multi-day conservative event in the history of the country. The gathering drew attendees from all 50 states and 14 countries, including Albania, Canada, Finland, Germany, Honduras, Mexico, Israel, Korea, Poland, the United Kingdom, China, Austria, and Japan. Kirk emphasized that this was the third annual AmericaFest, with many attendees returning from previous years.

Kirk praised the Turning Point USA staff for their work organizing the event, noting they had to add additional bleachers to accommodate the massive crowd. He framed the gathering as both a celebration of America and a source of hope during challenging times, positioning it as a grassroots response to what he called a "top-down revolution" happening in the country.

The Real Division in America

Kirk challenged the conventional narrative about political divisions in America. While acknowledging some interesting divisions between right and left, he argued the true division is not ideological but structural: Washington DC versus America, the powerful and well-connected versus the middle class, and the decent versus the indecent. He referenced Victor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning" in making this distinction.

Kirk expressed inherent distrust of organizations headquartered in Washington DC, explaining that Turning Point USA deliberately operates as far from the capital as possible. He characterized the current political climate as a revolution of the wealthy elite using their power and resources to destroy rather than build up the country, naming figures like George Soros, Laurene Powell Jobs, MacKenzie Bezos, Reed Hoffman, Mark Benioff, Reed Hastings, and President Joe Biden as examples.

The Elite Don't Mean Well

Kirk directly challenged the notion that America's elites have good intentions. He pointed to specific examples to support his argument:

  • The wide-open border with 12,000 people crossing daily
  • The medical treatment of children in the name of gender ideology
  • Attempts to imprison the leader of an opposition political party for 700 years
  • Opposition to the United States Constitution and Declaration of Independence

Kirk argued that these elites have been able to accomplish their goals because Americans were too busy with important tasks like running churches, businesses, and raising families to notice the encroachment on their freedoms. He positioned the grassroots movement represented at AmericaFest as the awakening response to this reality.

Elon Musk and the Liberation of Twitter

Kirk celebrated Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter as one of the greatest free speech victories in the history of Western Civilization. He contrasted the current environment with the previous censorship regime, noting that people can now freely express opinions on controversial topics without fear of being silenced.

Kirk highlighted several examples of speech that would have been censored before Musk's takeover, including statements about transgender issues, January 6, and the George Floyd case. He expressed hope that Musk would sue Media Matters into oblivion for their attacks on the platform.

The Turning Point USA Story: From Garage to Powerhouse

Kirk shared the origin story of Turning Point USA, which began 11 years ago in a garage in Lemont, Illinois. He drew parallels to other companies that started in garages, including Apple, HP, and Microsoft. What started as a movement of one or two people with no money, no connections, and no idea what they were doing has grown into an organization with:

  • 1,800 high school and college chapters across the country
  • 600,000 student activists
  • 300,000 grassroots donors
  • Massive social media presence that surpasses mainstream outlets like the New York Times and CNN

Kirk presented this growth as proof that only in America is such a story possible, where individuals can decide they don't like the direction of the country and actually do something about it.

Young Men Becoming More Conservative

Kirk highlighted polling data showing that high school boys are the most conservative they have been in 50 years. He contrasted this with what he characterized as the "leftwing beta male" promoted by progressive culture, showing a video encounter with a protester at the University of Arizona as an example.

Kirk argued that Turning Point USA celebrates masculinity as the answer to many of the country's problems, rejecting the narrative that masculinity is toxic or problematic. He stated there are "no genders, two sexes and unlimited personalities," crediting Billboard Chris for the formulation.

Reaching Young Women

While acknowledging that young women tend to be more liberal according to polling, Kirk showcased Turning Point USA's Young Women's Leadership Summit, which drew 2,500 young conservative women. He presented this as evidence that the organization is actively working to counter liberal dominance among young women and build conservative leadership.

Digital Dominance and Campus Presence

Kirk emphasized Turning Point USA's massive online presence, with content creators like Joe, Bob, Alex Clark, and Savannah Hernandez reaching millions of young people daily. He cited the New York Times acknowledging that his social media posts garner far more engagement than mainstream news organizations like CNN and the Times itself.

On college campuses, Kirk described going viral with simple questions that students struggle to answer, such as "What is a woman?" He showed footage from Northern Arizona University where multiple students could not provide a definition without circular reasoning. Kirk used this as evidence that "college is a scam," arguing that students are going hundreds of thousands of dollars into debt for an education that fails to teach basic truths.

Turning Point Academy: An Education Revolution

In response to the failures of traditional higher education, Kirk announced the launch of Turning Point Academy, designed to lead an education revolution for homeschool families and parents across the country. The initiative focuses on curriculum development and teacher training as an alternative to the progressive ideology dominant in public schools and universities.

TPUSA Faith: Kicking Wokeism Out of the Church

Kirk shared how he gave his life to the Lord in fifth grade at Christian Heritage Academy in the suburbs of Chicago, calling it the most important decision he ever made. He encouraged attendees to make Jesus Christ the "chairman of the board" of their lives.

Kirk described his shock during COVID-19 when the American church failed to lead resistance against lockdowns, despite his initial prediction that they would fight back for liberty. He was appalled when churches stayed shuttered while strip clubs, marijuana dispensaries, and convenience stores were deemed essential, and when many churches embraced critical race theory in summer 2020.

This led to the launch of TPUSA Faith with a simple mission statement: to kick wokeism out of the American church as quickly as possible as the heresy that it is. Kirk argued that political engagement is biblical, citing examples from Esther, Mordecai, Nehemiah, Jeremiah, and Daniel as counselors to kings, and Jeremiah 29:7 which instructs believers to seek the welfare of their nation.

Kirk stated that "disobedience to tyrants is obedience to God" because liberty is not man's idea but God's idea. He criticized pastors who refuse to speak on political issues, saying too many have bigger wardrobe budgets than book budgets and deliver TED Talks indecipherable from secular culture rather than preaching the Word.

America's Christian Foundation

Kirk emphasized America's Christian heritage, noting that 55 out of 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence were Bible-believing, church-attending Christians, and nine out of 13 states at the founding required officials to be Protestant Christians. He pointed out that God is mentioned four times in the Declaration of Independence.

He argued that one reason for America's current problems is the silence of the church, and that TPUSA Faith exists to wake up the church with courage, clarity, and conviction to push back against secular totalitarians.

Blexit: Reaching the Black Community

Kirk praised Candace Owens as one of the most important and impactful voices in the conservative movement and highlighted Blexit, which is now part of Turning Point USA. Blexit is described as the largest black outreach program in the conservative movement, going into inner cities and promoting conservative values.

Kirk expressed disgust for how the American left has dominated the black community over the last 50 to 60 years and called for support in leading an exodus toward conservative principles. He also noted that Turning Point USA campus tours featuring Candace Owens have grown so large they struggle to find rooms big enough to accommodate all the students who want to attend.

The Case Against Tolerance

Kirk rejected calls for tolerance, stating "I think we've tolerated enough nonsense over the last decade." He specifically addressed the incident where someone destroyed a Satanic display in the Iowa state capitol, calling the person "a hero" and saying he refuses to tolerate Satan being in a state capitol.

When challenged about religious liberty, Kirk mockingly suggested that James Madison surely didn't write the Constitution hoping that "one day satanists can also have religious liberty too."

Turning Point Action: Remaking the Republican Party

Kirk introduced Turning Point Action, the sister organization co-sponsoring AmericaFest, with three primary goals:

  1. Remake the Republican Party as a grassroots party from the bottom up and remove establishment figures like Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan
  2. Hold elected leaders accountable through scorecards and public pressure
  3. Win elections in 2024 by deploying grassroots organizing in key states

Kirk emphasized that it's not enough just to win elections; Republicans need to act like conservatives once in office. Turning Point Action downgraded members of Congress who voted for the National Defense Authorization Act, and Kirk said he's been receiving angry calls from politicians upset about their scores. His response: "You want a better score? Vote better."

No More Excuses for Republican Betrayal

Kirk expressed frustration with Republicans who betray their voters, stating he's "cut enough excuses for these Republicans over the last decade." He argued that Republican leaders need to feel the heat from the grassroots and deliver results.

Specific frustrations Kirk voiced included:

  • Senate Republicans allocating $200 billion to Ukraine while failing to secure the southern border
  • Continued support for Ukrainian President Zelensky while America faces an invasion at the border
  • Failure to stop medical child mutilation in the name of transgender ideology
  • Republicans like Mitt Romney protecting Democrats' interests and feelings
  • Romney's statements about not seeing evidence for impeaching Joe Biden

Kirk called Joe Biden "a traitor to the United States, period," emphasizing the point twice.

Ronna McDaniel Must Go

In a moment that drew massive applause, Kirk called for Ronna McDaniel to resign as chair of the Republican National Committee. When he asked the crowd if they agreed, the response was thunderous. Kirk acknowledged this stance wins him no favors in establishment circles but said he's "sick of being nice" and wants to win.

The New Paradigm: Grassroots Organizations Ascendant

Kirk described a paradigm shift in conservative politics where ascendant organizations and voices cannot be controlled by oligarchs. He pointed to the liberation of Twitter, Tucker Carlson being unleashed from Fox News, and grassroots energy as evidence that the political game has changed.

Kirk mocked establishment concerns about why Nikki Haley isn't doing better in polls, rejecting claims of sexism and stating it's "because of her awful ideas." He positioned Turning Point Action as playing offense, deploying the MAGA movement to take over state central committee meetings with an aggressive posture.

The 2024 Strategy: Chase Ballots in Three States

Turning Point Action announced plans to target Arizona, Wisconsin, and Georgia with aggressive ballot-chasing operations designed to get low-propensity voters to the polls during what Kirk described as "election month" rather than Election Day. The goal is to prevent Democrats from steamrolling conservatives again.

Kirk emphasized that the organization will "act out of obedience not out of the outcome," scrapping for every inch regardless of the final result. He expressed frustration that this is work the Republican establishment should be doing but isn't.

Get Married Young and Have Lots of Kids

Kirk offered unconventional advice to young people: get married as young as possible and have as many kids as possible. He explicitly rejected what he called the "siren song of modernity" that prioritizes career and education over family formation.

He shared that he regularly receives emails from women in their late 30s filled with regret because they followed cultural advice to pursue degrees and careers while delaying family, only to find themselves alone. Kirk questioned where society went wrong in valuing bank account balances over passing on legacy to the next generation.

Kirk praised his own marriage to Erika as the best decision of his life and encouraged attendees to meet their future soulmates at AmericaFest and start families.

Here I Am: A Call to Action

Kirk's central message throughout the speech was summarized in the Hebrew phrase "hineni" (here I am), which means "Lord, use me." He referenced biblical figures who responded to God's call with this phrase, including Abraham at the binding of Isaac, Moses at the burning bush, and the prophets Samuel and Isaiah.

Kirk encouraged attendees to adopt this posture throughout AmericaFest, remaining open to how God might use them. He listed various possibilities:

  • Running for office
  • Homeschooling children
  • Starting a Turning Point USA chapter
  • Getting involved in the 2024 election
  • Becoming a precinct committeeman
  • Holding elected leaders accountable

He reminded attendees that the globalists are worried about this awakening and the potential for accountability. The central nervous system of resistance to the elite agenda, Kirk argued, is represented by the people gathered at AmericaFest.

To Despair Is a Sin

Kirk directly addressed those who feel overwhelmed or hopeless about the state of the country, stating emphatically that "to despair is a sin." He urged people to "snap out of it," reminding them they still live in the greatest nation ever to exist in the history of the world.

While acknowledging challenges, Kirk emphasized there is still much to be hopeful and thankful for, and that Americans still have agency to change things. He expressed gratitude for the 300,000 donors to Turning Point USA, pastors speaking boldly, homeschool parents taking leaps of faith, and activists running for precinct committeeman positions.

Will We Win in 2024?

When asked if conservatives will win in 2024, Kirk gave a nuanced answer. He explained that if he said yes, people would go home and do nothing, assuming victory was assured. If he said no, people would give up in despair. Instead, Kirk stated that the outcome is "wholly dependent on what we do" and "completely dependent on how we act."

What the establishment fears, according to Kirk, is a grassroots, decentralized, people-first movement—exactly what was happening at AmericaFest with 13,000 people gathering in Maricopa County right before Christmas. He described these attendees as "micro sources of light against this overwhelming darkness" who would disperse across the country to take back communities and school boards.

The Stakes Are High

Kirk acknowledged uncertainty about the future, stating that while Christians ultimately win when Jesus returns, he appreciates "having a little uncertainty" in the present moment because it raises the stakes and demands action.

He committed to making 2024 the hardest year he has ever worked in his life, having already traveled 3,000 days over the past decade. Kirk challenged attendees to make the same commitment, crediting Turning Point USA's success to outworking the competition.

His closing message returned to the theme of service: "Here I am, Lord, use me." He thanked attendees and expressed excitement about what God will do over the next several days at AmericaFest and how the broader story will unfold in the coming year.
