Charlie Kirk Reveals the Fundamental Crisis Destroying American Education and How to Fight Back

Charlie Kirk exposes the root problem plaguing American education for over a century: a complete misunderstanding of what education actually means. Speaking at the AmericaFest Educators Summit, Kirk explains how modern schools have abandoned the classical model of leading students toward truth, beauty, and virtue, replacing it with a system that promotes self-esteem over self-control and ingratitude over gratitude. From John Dewey to Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Kirk traces the philosophical corruption that now teaches children they're inherently good while America is inherently bad. He announces that Turning Point Academy will unapologetically teach the truth about American founding, reject all forms of woke ideology, and restore what has been stolen from an entire generation suffering from historical amnesia.

The Foundation: Understanding What Education Really Means

Charlie Kirk opened his address at the AmericaFest Educators Summit by identifying what he believes is the most critical issue facing American education today. Those who have controlled the education system for the past century, starting with John Dewey and Woodrow Wilson, fundamentally misunderstand what education is supposed to be.

According to Kirk, the current educational establishment believes education means allowing students to choose their own direction, presenting them with options to liberate them from a broken world, and helping young people find themselves. Kirk calls this approach not just misguided, but evil and immoral, particularly when applied to young children.

Education, Kirk explained, comes from a Latin word meaning "to lead forth." The essential question then becomes: toward what are you leading them? The answer, he argues, must be truth, beauty, goodness, and virtue. Teachers must know the end goal before beginning the education process.

Kirk illustrated his point by criticizing the common practice of teachers asking elementary students for their opinions on controversial news topics. He stated bluntly that a fifth grader's opinion on the news cycle is completely irrelevant. Education is not about soliciting votes from children, but about correcting them when they're wrong and setting them on the right path.

Turning Point Academy's Uncompromising Standards

Kirk announced that Turning Point Academy will maintain firm positions on what will and will not be taught. There will be no critical race theory, no wokism, and no transgender or gender ideology. He characterized these as "insidious mind poison" that will not be tolerated anywhere Turning Point Academy operates.

Addressing potential concerns about freedom of speech and diverse viewpoints, Kirk clarified that while he supports constitutional free speech, the classroom is not a place for all ideas to receive equal footing. He used examples like flat earth theory, bloodletting, and eugenics to illustrate that parents don't actually want their children exposed to every viewpoint—only those rooted in truth.

Kirk pointed out the irony that current educators claim not to believe in absolute truth while simultaneously insisting their version of truth be taught to children. He sees this in the widespread teaching that men and women are basically the same, that white privilege exists everywhere, and that racism is embedded in every corner of American society.

The Crisis of Ingratitude

One of the most significant problems Kirk identified is that an entire generation is being taught ingratitude. Scripture repeatedly commands thankfulness, he noted, because gratitude is not automatic to human nature. The raw material of human nature makes people very ungrateful.

Teaching children to say thank you is one of the first lessons parents attempt, Kirk observed, and if human nature were naturally grateful, this lesson would only need to be taught once. Instead, people are inherently programmed through original sin to be ungrateful. An ungrateful people, Kirk warned, is a deeply unhappy people.

The education system, particularly at the college level, actively teaches ingratitude. Students don't just become ungrateful, Kirk said—they become increasingly bitter toward the world. This represents a fundamental shift from teaching children to appreciate what they have to teaching them to resent what they don't have and what has been done before them.

Rejecting the Myth of Inherent Human Goodness

Kirk stated clearly that Turning Point Academy does not believe children are basically good. This belief, he noted, should not be controversial for Christians, yet many pastors fail to communicate it. While acknowledging he personally believes humans are inherently bad, Kirk said at minimum, people are not inherently good. We have an inclination toward a nature that is not admirable or virtuous.

Therefore, any goodness in the world must be taught. It won't happen automatically. Kirk traced this opposing view to Jean-Jacques Rousseau in the 1700s, who started the Romantic Movement and believed humans were born good but corrupted as they aged—corrupted by capitalism, patriarchy, Western values, and Christianity. Rousseau believed in the primitive over the civilized, the infant over the adult.

Almost every government school funded with taxpayer dollars, Kirk argued, teaches this Romantic view. They tell children that nothing is wrong with them that needs improvement; instead, everything wrong exists in the external world—capitalism, America, Western civilization. This creates narcissistic activists who believe there's nothing wrong with themselves but everything wrong with the world around them.

The Self-Esteem Movement's Damaging Legacy

Kirk shared a personal story from his high school years at a government school where a sign read "You're perfect the way you are." This troubled him, and one day he asked his teacher why he needed to attend school, do homework, or receive grades if he was already perfect.

The self-esteem movement, Kirk argued, is neither biblical nor moral, and it produces the opposite of its intended effect—people with no self-esteem. Citing Dennis Prager, Kirk said we need to teach children self-control, not self-esteem. Self-esteem actually creates more self-harm because it makes people think something is wrong with them when they don't feel perfect.

Instead, children should be told they have potential but aren't there yet. They need to put in work, sacrifice, diligence, wake up early, and maybe then they can fulfill the potential God has placed before them. This approach, Kirk believes, would reduce depression rates and improve mental health far more than telling children they're already perfect.

Creating Activists Instead of Thinkers

The entire educational system is designed to create raw material for activists, Kirk contended. When you ask an average high schooler about the biggest problems facing society, they cite climate change, racism, sexism, and anti-trans beliefs. What should they say instead? According to Kirk, they should say the biggest problem is themselves—that they're the biggest threat to society and need to figure themselves out before tackling other issues.

We are being terrorized, Kirk said, by people who tell us our world is awful but who never make their bed or even shower regularly. The biggest battle we should teach—and this is biblical—is the battle against your own nature. It's you against you. Through the Christian lens, we realize we can never win that battle alone; only Jesus can win it for us. Yet most children are never exposed to this teaching.

Teaching the Truth About America

This philosophical foundation leads directly to the rise of anti-Americanism in the country. Kirk explained that structural anti-Americanism exists because students are not taught to be appreciative, grateful, or thankful for America. They're taught nothing but complaints about what happened before them.

Turning Point Academy will teach the beauty of the American founding, the significance of 1776, and how the Founding Fathers quoted Deuteronomy more than any other book when creating what Kirk called the freest, best country ever to exist in world history.

The curriculum will teach the truth about slavery—that America was the first country to actually do something about abolishing this sin that pre-existed America and still exists in the world today. Kirk noted that the first anti-slavery convention ever hosted was in Philadelphia in 1775 by Benjamin Franklin. Vermont independently abolished slavery in 1776. By the time the Constitution was ratified, nine of the thirteen states had already independently abolished slavery. George Washington said it was a matter of when, not if, America would abolish slavery.

Kirk challenged his audience to name another nation with that kind of introspection, heroism, and courage to eliminate a moral evil. Are children being taught this? Of course not. They're being taught that because something evil happened, the entire country must be discarded.

What Makes America Unique

Kirk offered a powerful framework: the negatives about American history are universal; the positives are unique. Every country that has ever existed has struggled with the same issues America struggled with. But America is the only country that accomplished what it did. No other country comes even close.

Robbing a generation of excitement about their nation is evil, Kirk stated. He believes this is biblical, citing Jeremiah 29:7, which instructs people to pray for or seek the welfare of the nation in which they live, because their welfare is tied to their nation's welfare. We are called to fast and pray for our leaders. It's a good thing to want what's best for your country, yet we're teaching children the exact opposite.

This creates deeply unhappy people. People are happier when they can say their country has done something heroic or significant. Turning Point Academy aims to fix this through its educator network, resources, curriculum, teacher trainings, and partnerships with schools.

A Nation Suffering From Historical Alzheimer's

Kirk warned that America faces a crisis where an entire generation suffers from historical amnesia. The nation is experiencing collective Alzheimer's—we don't know where we came from, who we are, or where we're going. Turning Point Academy's mission is to restore the memory of the greatest nation ever to exist in the history of the world.

The Moral Danger of Wokism

Kirk made clear that Turning Point Academy will not dance around edges or be politically correct about wokism. The organization will state unequivocally that wokism comes from the pit of hell, because it does.

He defined wokism simply: if it's so insane it requires a PhD to explain it, it's wokism. If you have to write five thousand pages to argue that men can become pregnant, that borders don't matter, or that white people need to atone for something they didn't do because they look like someone who was evil hundreds of years ago—you are woke.

Kirk expressed frustration with people who say he needs to hear out woke ideas. He's read the books—Introduction to Critical Race Theory, Foucault, Derrida, Derrick Bell, Angela Davis. He's studied the material so others don't have to. Turning Point Academy will work with leading anti-woke theorists like James Lindsay to precisely and tenaciously inform people about the danger these ideas pose.

Kirk believes this set of ideas now permeating the military, corporate America, and every corner of society will destroy everything Americans love if there isn't an ambitious and bold counter-offensive. It will destroy the banking system, the economy, education, and most importantly, its number one goal: the family—the backbone of any functioning society.

Wokism, Kirk warned, is a virus that will last longer than COVID and do more damage. Far too often, churches, schools, and businesses accommodate this evil set of ideas.

Protecting the Innocence of Children

Kirk didn't mince words about what he sees happening in schools. Teaching an eleven-year-old that they can take drugs that will chemically castrate them in the name of liberation is evil, period. This includes everyone in the system who administers the drugs or allows it to happen.

He referenced Francis Parker School in downtown Chicago, where the dean of students distributed extremely graphic materials to fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen-year-olds in class—not as an extracurricular activity, but during regular school instruction.

This raised a fundamental question for Kirk: not only must we answer what a human being is (made in the image of God with mind, body, and soul), but also what a child is. He praised the Jewish tradition of bar and bat mitzvahs for clearly marking the transition from childhood to adulthood. In Jewish culture, the parent prays, thanking God that they are no longer responsible for their child's sins.

Kirk wished Christianity took coming of age as seriously. The point of these traditions, when done correctly with Torah study and ceremony, is that up until that moment, a child's innocence must be protected by adults. The protection of the innocence of children is the mark of a moral or immoral society.

The left doesn't believe in protecting childhood innocence, Kirk argued. They believe children should be sexualized. This is not an exaggeration—drag queens are being brought into churches and schools. Kirk believes that one day, people will be judged based on whether they stood up against this widespread, unspeakable immorality.

The Biblical Command to Hate Evil

Kirk cited one of his favorite verses, Psalm 97:10: those who love God are commanded to hate evil. If you love God, you must hate evil. He asked how many pastors who talk about loving God also tell their congregations they must hate evil. It's a harsh teaching, but it's true. And there's plenty of evil to hate right now, without looking very far.

A Movement of Light and Revival

Turning Point Academy is positioned as more than just a school—it's a movement. Kirk expressed excitement about its potential to bring revival, though he admits uncertainty about where it will go except up and outward. He believes it will be a blessing to many people and represents the next most significant development for Turning Point USA beyond all their other programming.

Questions and Answers

Getting Rid of the Department of Education

When asked about eliminating the Department of Education as unconstitutional, Kirk agreed wholeheartedly that it should happen, though he doubted it would occur in the near term. Instead, he advocated following Ron DeSantis's model and working on the state level to remove critical race theory and wokism on a state-by-state, county-by-county, school board-by-school board basis.

At the federal level, Kirk wants to see a special committee investigate Merrick Garland to find out why moms and dads were put on a domestic terror list for showing up at school board meetings. People should go to jail for that, he said. Parents asking questions about sexually charged curriculum should never be put on terror lists by their own government.

Kirk emphasized his belief in local action. He's less interested in federal solutions than ever before, seeing an almost untouchable praetorian guard of the administrative state. Local, state, county, and municipal action is where the real change can happen. He cited Pastor Tim Thompson, whose church helped take over a school board in Temecula, California, and banned critical race theory in their first meeting.

School Choice and Teachers

Addressing the question of how to get teachers to support school choice, Kirk noted that Arizona has the best school choice laws in the country, where money follows the child. The challenge is getting teachers willing to leave the comfort and safety of government jobs with government pensions to trust in the Lord and work in pod schools or private schools.

Many in the American teaching profession are too comfortable with their tenured pension jobs. While Kirk doesn't blame them—human beings are designed to seek comfort—that comfort won't change or save the country. There are many good government school teachers, but Kirk believes there are more not-so-good than good ones.

He acknowledged having both fabulous and awful government school teachers himself. The problem is that awful teachers earn just as much as fabulous ones. Kirk believes we should fire ten percent of all American teachers and pay the top ten percent ten percent more. While easier said than done, school choice makes this kind of performance-based system possible, whereas it's nearly impossible within the government school model.

Twitter Files and Free Speech

When asked about the significance of the Twitter Files revelations, Kirk called Elon Musk liberating Twitter a bigger deal than Republicans controlling the U.S. Senate. For eighteen months, Kirk's account was labeled with a "do not amplify" tag. Since that tag was removed, he's reaching tens of millions more people per month, making this a very substantial development.

Teachers Unions and Alternatives

Regarding California teachers who feel hamstrung by teachers unions, Kirk suggested that effort would be better spent leaving the government school system altogether and building alternatives. However, for government school teachers who want immediate action, they can leave the union right now thanks to the Supreme Court's Janus decision. They should stop paying dues immediately—the unions don't represent them and are simply taking their money.

Kirk expressed increasing cynicism about the future of government schooling in America, which is why building alternatives is so critical.

The Danger of TikTok and Smartphones

A Christian Academy teacher asked how to address the influence of TikTok on students who have access to it, noting these are often the most defiant and disrespectful children. Kirk's response was emphatic: if there's only one thing people remember from his talk, it should be that anyone they love should stay far away from TikTok. There is no reason for it whatsoever.

TikTok will destroy children's lives and make them depressed and anxious. It is neurologically designed to make children hate themselves—it's digital heroin and opium. It was designed by a military firm in China with the explicit intent to make the American population depressed, anxious, and dependent on psychiatric drugs. Kirk urged people to research what's behind TikTok. It's also a conduit for transgender ideology and other harmful content.

As a teacher, Kirk suggested hosting a special evening to educate parents on exactly what this technology does to children. He praised God that he grew up without smartphones and pleaded with parents not to give children smartphones, as they will ruin their lives. There is no redeemable value for a smartphone until age eighteen, in his view.

Kirk sees children with smartphones becoming anxious and ending up on benzodiazepines, Zoloft, and Prozac. Six million teenagers in the last two years have been newly prescribed psychiatric drugs, and the trend has accelerated since smartphones became ubiquitous. He noted that suicide is now a leading cause of death among young people, which he attributes to smartphones being portals to every worst impulse a human being can have.

While acknowledging some parents say they need to communicate with their children, Kirk pointed out he grew up without this technology just fine. If communication is truly necessary, a Jitterbug phone—which only makes calls—is sufficient. In Kirk's personal opinion, smartphones have no redeemable value until someone is actually running a business, and even then it's questionable.

The Mission Ahead

Kirk closed by encouraging attendees to visit the Turning Point Academy booth, sign up for information, and access available materials. The organization is eager to partner with educators, parents, and anyone concerned about the direction of American education. The goal is to create immersion experiences at events like AmericaFest and the Educators Summit that challenge people to be bold and courageous—whether that means homeschooling, starting a Turning Point Academy, enrolling children at Dream City Christian Turning Point Academy, or standing up as a student against problematic teaching in local schools.

The vision is clear: restore what has been stolen, teach truth without apology, protect childhood innocence, celebrate American greatness, and raise a generation that understands the battle is first within themselves before it's with the world around them.
