Frank Turek Was There When Charlie Kirk Was Murdered: Death Threats, Candace Owens, and the Truth About That Horrible Day

Frank Turek stood just 25 feet from Charlie Kirk when the fatal shot rang out. In this powerful conversation with Eric Metaxas, Turek recounts the horror of that moment, the conspiracy theories that followed, and the death threats he now faces after Candace Owens suggested possible involvement in Charlie's murder. Turek dismantles the wild accusations one by one, explains why the prosecution cannot reveal evidence yet, and shares how Charlie's legacy is already bearing fruit, with people around the world coming to Christ. This is a raw, emotional, and essential conversation about truth, spiritual warfare, and trusting God through unimaginable grief.

Frank Turek Was Right There When Charlie Kirk Was Killed

Frank Turek, renowned Christian apologist and founder of Cross Examined, was standing just 25 feet away from Charlie Kirk when the young conservative leader was shot and killed. In this deeply emotional conversation with Eric Metaxas, Turek recounts the horrific moment he witnessed Charlie's murder, the immediate aftermath, and the chaotic hours that followed. Turek was FaceTiming his son and daughter-in-law when the shot rang out. He saw Charlie go down. He rushed to help. He was in the back seat of the car as Charlie's security team performed CPR, covered in blood, knowing his friend was already gone.

"His eyes were fixed," Turek recalls. "He was already with Jesus."

But the nightmare didn't end there. In the weeks following Charlie's death, Turek—along with others close to Charlie—became the target of vicious conspiracy theories, many of them amplified by Candace Owens. She has suggested that Charlie's friends, including Turek, Mikey McCoy, and Rob McCoy, may have been involved in his murder. Turek now receives death threats. So does Mikey McCoy, Charlie's close friend and the son of Pastor Rob McCoy.

"Mikey won't even step on an ant," Turek says. "He's getting emails telling him to repent. People believe this now."

Dismantling the Conspiracy Theories One by One

Turek, a master of logic and evidence, methodically dismantles the conspiracy theories swirling around Charlie's death. He addresses the "man in the white hat" theory (that was Turek himself, supposedly signaling the shooter), the claims about blood on Mikey McCoy's clothes (it was on Turek and others in the car), the "wrong hospital" theory, and the bizarre accusations about drones, missing evidence, and supposed coverups.

"The FBI called me," Turek says. "They asked, 'Were you signaling the shooter?' I said, 'Yeah, I was telling him to steal second base.' It's the dumbest thing in history. Why would a shooter 100 to 200 yards away need me to signal him? He knows there's only one guy under the tent with a microphone—Charlie Kirk."

Turek explains that not every false statement is a lie. Rob McCoy, for instance, misspoke when discussing the blood—he was confused and grieving. Turek himself thought there was drone footage, but it may have been taken from an iPhone by someone standing above the amphitheater. These are not lies or evidence of a conspiracy. They are the natural confusion of people in the middle of unimaginable trauma.

Why the Prosecution Cannot Reveal Evidence Yet

One of the most important points Turek makes is about how prosecutions actually work. People are demanding answers, demanding transparency, demanding the prosecution reveal what they know. But that's not how it works.

"The prosecution's job is not to quell internet conspiracy theories," Turek explains. "Their job is to convict the real killer. They will not tell you what they're doing for at least three reasons: they can't taint the jury pool, they can't tip off the defense, and they can't let false witnesses contaminate the investigation."

Turek's friend, cold case homicide detective J. Warner Wallace, confirmed this. The prosecution will not—and should not—reveal their evidence until the pre-trial hearing in January or the trial itself. Demanding transparency now is demanding they sabotage their own case.

As for the murder weapon, Turek addresses the claim that a 30-06 rifle could not have caused Charlie's injuries. "That's just false," he says. "It all depends on the distance of the shot, the age of the ammunition—Tyler Robinson may have been using his grandfather's 50-year-old rounds—and what the bullet struck when it hit. If it hit Charlie's spine, it would have fragmented. We'll know the truth when the autopsy is released, which won't be until it has to be."

The Spiritual Warfare Behind the Attacks

Eric Metaxas and Frank Turek both see the attacks on Charlie's friends and the spread of conspiracy theories as part of a larger spiritual battle. Charlie Kirk was leading a revival. Young people were coming to Christ. The gospel was being preached. Turning Point USA was on fire for God and country. And now, in the wake of his death, the enemy is trying to destroy it all.

"Satan doesn't attack ineffective people," Turek says. "Why waste your time? He attacks effective people. Charlie was over the target. That's why we're getting all this flak."

Eric adds, "This is a satanic attempt to destroy what Charlie built, to destroy the revival that has already begun. There are wicked forces out there. And I've been heartbroken to see even good Christian people get sucked into these lies."

Both men acknowledge the broader cultural moment we're in—a time when trust in institutions has collapsed, when people have been lied to by the government, the media, and even the church. It's understandable that people are skeptical. But skepticism is not the same as wisdom. Asking questions is fine. But some questions are complex questions, designed to imply guilt without evidence.

"Asking 'When did you stop beating your wife?' is not just a question," Turek says. "It's an accusation. And that's what's happening here."

Charlie Kirk: The American Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Eric Metaxas, author of the definitive biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, has said publicly that Charlie Kirk is the American Bonhoeffer. Charlie's faith was central to everything he did. He didn't just care about America—he cared about America because God cares about America. He understood that this nation could not exist without God, without Christians living out their faith in the public square.

And like Bonhoeffer, Charlie was murdered by dark forces. He was 31 years old.

"Charlie was already conformed to the image of Christ," Turek says, his voice breaking. "I'm 30 years older than him, and he was more conformed than I am. He would send me Bible verses about how to respond to people attacking him. 'Blessed are the peacemakers,' he'd say. 'I'll talk to him.' How does a 31-year-old have that kind of wisdom?"

Turek shares that if Charlie were alive today and someone told him, "In order for 100 people to come to Christ and become disciples, you have to die," Charlie would have said, "Sign me up."

And it's far more than 100 people. Bible sales are up 40% since Charlie's death. People from around the world—Sweden, Europe, Asia—are writing to say they've become Christians because of Charlie Kirk. The ripple effect is not just a ripple. It's a tsunami.

Praying for Candace Owens and Choosing to Trust God

Despite everything, Turek does not attack Candace Owens. He prays for her. He wonders aloud if she might be having a mental breakdown, given how contradictory and reckless her accusations have become. She has suggested that Israel, Netanyahu, Trump, TPUSA, Egypt, Mikey McCoy, Rob McCoy, Frank Turek, and even France are all somehow involved in Charlie's murder. But she has left out the most plausible culprit: Tyler Robinson, the man arrested and charged with the crime, whose own parents turned him in.

"They can't all be true," Turek says. "Which means most of what she's saying is false. And you can't put forth possibilities that implicate people unless there's real evidence. You don't have it. You have possibilities. You have contrived circumstances. But you don't have corroborating evidence. And that's very reckless when people are getting death threats."

Eric agrees. "I've been stunned to see even friends of mine get sucked into this. It reminds me that even the elect can be deceived. And it's painful to see the evil that is still in good people, in Christian people, who are susceptible to this kind of deception."

Both men close with a call to trust God. This is a moment of choosing. Will you trust God more or less in the face of this tragedy? Will you submit your whole life to Jesus, or will you stand on your own? The forces of hell desire you. Your only hope is to stand firmly on the rock that is Christ Jesus.

"If you do not submit to the will of God in every part of your life," Eric says, "you're on your own. And you don't want to be on your own."

Frank Turek closes with a prayer for Candace Owens, for the prosecution, for Erika Kirk, for Turning Point USA, and for all those grieving Charlie's loss. He prays that more people would come to know Jesus not just as a believer, but as a disciple. He prays that the truth would be revealed and that people would be set free by it.

"In Christ's name we pray. Amen."
