Oxford Union President George Abaraonye Celebrated Charlie Kirk's Death After Debating Him

George Abaraonye, president of the Oxford Union, debated Charlie Kirk about masculinity, marriage, and traditional values. Months later, when Charlie Kirk was shot, Abaraonye sent a message to a group chat celebrating his death, writing "Let's effing go. Charlie Kirk got shot, lol." The response exposes a disturbing trend at prestigious universities where debate opponents are no longer intellectual adversaries but enemies to be destroyed. At least 200 life members have pledged support for a motion of no confidence against Abaraonye, whose presidency has become a stain on the Oxford Union's reputation. Charlie Kirk represented the spirit of free speech the Oxford Union was founded to uphold, making the celebration of his death particularly disgraceful.

The Debate at Oxford Union

George Abaraonye, president of the Oxford Union—the world's leading debating society—debated against Charlie Kirk in May. During the debate, they discussed masculinity, marriage, and traditional values. The exchange was pointed but civil, with Charlie Kirk challenging Abaraonye's views on modern masculinity and life choices.

Charlie Kirk pressed Abaraonye on whether London's cultural shift over the past decade had made men happier. "With all due respect, have you been to London the last 10 years? Men can do whatever they want. Are they happier?" Kirk asked.

Abaraonye responded, "I live in London. Men can dress how they want. Men can act how they want and go to any club. Has it worked? Yeah, but also we've had austerity. There are other factors outside of simply just—"

Kirk interrupted: "You see what you're doing respectfully. You're scrambling for an excuse to get away from the truth that's right in front of you. Maybe men should get married and have children because it's worked for 2,000 years."

The Shocking Message After the Shooting

After Charlie Kirk's murder, George Abaraonye sent a message to a group chat that read: "Let's effing go. Charlie Kirk got shot, lol." The message represents a celebration of the death of someone he once looked in the eyes and debated—someone he disagreed with intellectually but shared a platform with in the spirit of open discourse.

Charlie Kirk represented the spirit of free speech the Oxford Union was founded to uphold. For the president of this historic institution to be celebrating his death is nothing short of disgraceful and exposes the deeper rot that has infected universities.

A Pattern of Extremism

This wasn't an isolated lapse in judgment. George Abaraonye has previously argued that some institutions should be destroyed by any means necessary. In his own words: "And this is a view I wholeheartedly agree with. This view, the view that some institutions are too broken, too aggressive, too oppressive to be reformed like cancers of our society. They must and they should be taken down by any means necessary."

The fact that Abaraonye was ever elected as president is a stain on the Oxford Union's reputation. His election proves that attending a fancy university doesn't make you wise.

A Motion of No Confidence

There is a silver lining to this dark chapter. At least 200 life members have already pledged their support for a motion of no confidence against George Abaraonye. The hope is that they can restore sanity at the Oxford Union and return the institution to its founding principles of free speech, civil debate, and intellectual discourse—even with those with whom we vehemently disagree.
