From Devout Muslim to Christian Convert
Ridvan Aydemir, who runs the YouTube channel Apostate Prophet, grew up in Germany as the child of devout Turkish Sunni Muslim parents. His household enforced strict religious practices, including prohibitions against music. From a young age, Aydemir experienced the tension between his Muslim upbringing and the Christian-influenced German culture surrounding him.
"I was raised on the Christian circumstances at school while being having Islam completely built into my mind at home," Aydemir explains. As a child, he attended religious gatherings where he heard disturbing messages about fighting and killing Jews, and that Christians would be enemies of Muslims. These teachings included eschatological beliefs that Jesus would return as a Muslim ruler to "break the cross and kill the pigs."
The Path Away from Islam
Aydemir's departure from Islam began when he became deeply religious as a late teenager and started reading the Quran seriously. What Muslims claimed was "the best book ever written" proved disappointing and confusing. As his friend David Wood says, "reading the Quran is like penance."
The Quran consists of 114 suras (chapters) arranged not chronologically but by length, making it difficult to follow. Aydemir discovered that the text felt incoherent and failed to provide the spiritual guidance he sought. This revelation marked the beginning of his decade-long journey as an atheist.
Ten Years of Atheism and Searching for Meaning
During his atheist years, Aydemir maintained respect for religion, particularly Christianity, but struggled internally. "For all those 10 years I wasn't happy. I was really struggling inside," he admits. He attempted to embrace nihilism and the idea that life has no inherent purpose or meaning, but found this position intellectually and emotionally unsustainable.
The contradiction became clear: finding peace in meaninglessness is itself a form of meaning. "One way to go against that is to simply embrace the absurdity of it all which I was trying to do and to simply live with it. But it's very difficult," Aydemir reflects.
Discovering the Historical Evidence for Christianity
Aydemir's path to Christianity began when he investigated the historical foundations of the faith. As an atheist, he had believed that Christianity relied on unreliable accounts written long after Jesus by people who never witnessed the events. This assumption proved completely false.
"Only when I was slowly approaching Christianity did I find out that this is complete nonsense but so many people propagate this idiotic idea," he says. He discovered that Luke was a first-class historian paid by Theophilus to research Jesus, producing the Gospel of Luke and Acts as a definitive documentary. The historical accounts revealed that Paul directly met and spent extensive time with Jesus's disciples and apostles, confirming each other's testimonies.
"They have it confirmed to each other that hundreds of people witnessed the miracles that are recorded in this book that we now call the New Testament in the Gospels," Aydemir explains. He felt betrayed by the misinformation he had accepted as a skeptic, discovering that Christianity is "the most robust historically verified faith period."
The Role of Heart and Mind in Conversion
While historical evidence led Aydemir toward Christianity, emotional and spiritual experiences sealed his conversion. His wife approached Christianity before him and asked him to read a section from Romans about Paul's reliance on God. This prompted Aydemir to read the entire book of Romans, which fascinated him.
When Aydemir attempted Jewish prayers during his spiritual search, something felt incomplete. But his first Christian prayer proved transformative. "It brought something back that I felt had died within me so many decades ago and it is still there," he recalls. His first experience attending church, specifically the divine liturgy of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, overwhelmed him.
Aydemir appreciates Orthodox theology's humble approach to God, focusing more on what God is not rather than presuming to define exactly what God is. This contrasts with some Western theological traditions that attempt precise definitions of God's attributes.
Muhammad: A Critical Examination
Aydemir provides detailed information about Muhammad's biography that he believes Westerners need to understand. Muslims consider Muhammad the greatest man ever to live and the perfect moral example for all humanity. However, Aydemir presents evidence that contradicts this veneration.
Muhammad was a warlord personally responsible for thousands of deaths and tens of thousands more through his campaigns. At age 50-something, Muhammad married Aisha when she was six years old and consummated the marriage when she was nine. He had no necessity for this marriage as he already had other wives.
When asked how Islamic scholars defend this, Aydemir explains they offer several arguments: that times were different (though Muhammad is supposed to be the perfect example for all times), that Aisha transmitted important religious knowledge (suggesting this justified the relationship), or that girls are ready for marriage when they show signs of development. Reformist Muslims sometimes claim she might have been slightly older, but traditional scholars accept the traditional account.
The Quran's Treatment of Women
Aydemir highlights several Quranic verses that reveal Islam's view of women. Surah 4, ironically titled "Women," contains particularly troubling passages. Verse 24 permits Muslims to have sex not only with their wives but also with "those that they possess"—meaning sex slaves acquired through war.
Verse 34 states that women must obey their husbands because men are superior. If a husband fears "arrogance" from his wife, he should admonish her, separate beds, and if that fails, he may beat her. According to Aisha, Muhammad's child bride, "she didn't see any other women who were suffering as much as the Muslim women."
Aydemir recounts that Muhammad saw hell during his night journey and reported that the majority of hell's inhabitants were women because they are "ungrateful" and need to be more obedient. "That's what a convenient theology for like a Jeff think like Jeffrey Epstein with a standing army. That's basically Muhammad," the interviewer responds.
Islamic Expansion and Religious Conquest
Aydemir emphasizes a fundamental difference between Christianity and Islam regarding how they spread. Christianity began with Christ taking on human form, suffering, and his followers spreading the message through preaching while being persecuted. "Over centuries it develops through simply preaching and being persecuted."
Islam took a different path. Muhammad established an Islamic state in Medina and began raiding and attacking others. After his death, his successors continued this pattern of violent conquest. "Most of the Muslim territories in today's time are a result of violent conquests," Aydemir states.
He quotes Khaldun, a respected medieval Muslim scholar, who wrote in his work Muqaddimah that Islam differs from Judaism and Christianity because "Islam is the only religion that has a truly universal mission." The caliph serves as religious leader, military leader, and state leader with the duty "to spread the religion by will or by force."
The Quran's Commands Toward Non-Muslims
Surah 9, verse 29 instructs Muslims to fight those who don't accept Islam—specifically Jews, Christians, and others—until they are humiliated and pay jizya (protection money). The options given to non-Muslims are conversion, paying tribute while living in humiliation, or death.
Regarding deception, Aydemir explains that taqiya allows Muslims to lie about being Muslim when revealing their faith would cause trouble. Beyond this specific doctrine, the Quran generally authorizes Muslims to speak in whatever way benefits Islam, and Muhammad permitted Muslims to deceive the enemies of Islam—defined as all non-Muslims.
Islam's Incompatibility with Western Civilization
Aydemir firmly believes Islam cannot coexist with Western values. "Western civilization was formed and shaped by philosophers and by Christianity. Islam is anti-Christianity. Islam orders the subjugation and the destruction and eventual elimination of Christianity."
Islam rejects the separation of mosque and state. In Islamic teaching, it is haram (forbidden) to establish laws separate from what Allah has established. Secularism itself is considered forbidden. "If you give the power, you will lose everything," Aydemir warns.
As evidence, Aydemir shares his personal situation. Despite Turkey being a secular NATO member, he faces multiple lawsuits from the Turkish government for statements like calling the Quran "a book of ignorance." He cannot safely return to Turkey. "There is no freedom. There is no free speech."
The Growth of Islam in the West
Growing up in Germany, Aydemir repeatedly heard Muslims celebrating that "it's a fantastic thing that we are taking over that our numbers are growing." This wasn't just childhood experience—he still hears the same sentiments today. This reality motivated him to speak publicly despite wanting to leave his traumatic religious past behind.
"We have today in the UK in many other countries we have Muslim preachers openly saying that the vision of Muslims should be to take over Western nations," Aydemir reports. They advocate for growing Muslim populations and increasing Muslim involvement in politics across the UK, Canada, and Australia. He warns that America must act quickly to avoid reaching the same situation.
Aydemir identifies Western ignorance as the greatest threat. "The most important thing is the ignorance of the non-Muslims of those that we have among us." He believes Islam represents the biggest subverter of Western societies and free nations, yet it receives insufficient attention compared to other political threats.
Muslim Communities in America
Muslim communities in Michigan, Minnesota, Texas, and elsewhere openly discuss spreading Islam and growing their influence. While they claim peaceful intentions, Aydemir warns about the consequences of allowing them to gain sufficient power. "If you allow enough power to be taken by those who want to establish Islam as governing force, you will very very quickly lose control because they will not allow you to take it back."
What the West Should Do
Aydemir offers specific recommendations for Western nations. First, recognize what Islam actually is—not simply a religion but a comprehensive political and social system incompatible with Western societies. Second, acknowledge this incompatibility directly and publicly.
Third, address political Islam directly and prevent Muslims from taking advantage of well-meaning liberal immigration policies. "If you see Islam spreading and political Islam spreading, remove it. Make policies about it. Get rid of it. Kick it out before it's too late."
Aydemir argues that Western freedoms were established by and for people who share those values. "These nations are founded in order to have people like us with our values to live together. That's why we have freedom because we cherish it. We value it. We can do it." These freedoms weren't meant to be offered to "every single anti-freedom group that comes in and wants to abolish it and abuse it in order to oppress you."
Living Under Constant Threat
As an apostate who publicly criticizes Islam, Aydemir faces the death penalty according to Islamic law. He receives numerous death threats with messages like "I will behead you. I will rape your family." When asked about the religion of peace, he responds sarcastically: "It's very peaceful. Once they kill you, it's all peaceful."
Despite these dangers, Aydemir continues his work because he believes the issue is too important to ignore. His name, Apostate Prophet, signals his rejection of Islam and his current mission to educate others about Islamic theology and practice. His knowledge of Arabic and years studying Islamic texts make him particularly dangerous to Islamic apologetics because he can directly address claims about context and translation.
A Call for Courage and Awareness
The interview concludes with mutual recognition of the importance of this conversation. The interviewer acknowledges seeking out Aydemir specifically because of his unique ability to educate on Islamic theology with firsthand experience and linguistic knowledge. "I have really started speaking more and more about Islam... I've been looking for you because you can educate me."
Aydemir emphasizes that this conversation should mark a beginning, not an end. "This should be a beginning. We should start talking about this matter very seriously and should speak up more and more from here on because this is a very crucial crucial topic."
