Rob Schneider Rips SNL and Media Bias: Comedy Died When It Stopped Mocking Power

October 13, 2022

Rob Schneider doesn't hold back on the state of modern comedy and media. The former SNL cast member reveals how the legendary sketch show abandoned its mission to mock those in power, turning instead into a political protection racket. Schneider discusses the stark contrast between how Biden and Trump were treated, the impossibility of being openly conservative in entertainment, and why California's green energy policies represent irrational religion over common sense. From his new family film to the absurdity of Tesla charging lines, Schneider offers a refreshingly honest take on politics, comedy, and the death of rational discourse in America.

SNL Abandoned Its Core Mission

Rob Schneider pulled no punches when discussing how Saturday Night Live has fundamentally changed its approach to political comedy. The former cast member explained that the show's entire purpose used to be making fun of whoever holds power, whether Democrat or Republican. He recalled getting phone calls from the Democratic Party complaining when they made fun of the Clintons, criticizing even their daughter Chelsea. "You have to make fun of the people in power," Schneider insisted, "and I'm glad that they're doing it because that's what needs to happen. But it's not happening."

The shift became most apparent during Biden's presidency. Schneider noted that when Jim Carrey initially played Biden during the Democratic debates, the portrayal was genuinely funny and mocking. But once Biden secured the nomination, SNL brought in someone "that just acts normal as opposed to Trump." Schneider questioned whether SNL boss Lorne Michaels simply decided he was concerned that a Republican might win and threw comedy into the back burner.

The Biden Treatment: Too Uncomfortable to Mock

Schneider revealed a conversation with Dana Carvey, widely considered one of the greatest presidential impressionists SNL ever had. According to Carvey, when he first started doing his Biden impression, audiences literally couldn't laugh at it. "It's like seeing a deer get hit on the side of the road," Schneider explained. "It's a car crash. It's like when his bike fell over."

The problem wasn't that Biden couldn't be funny - it was that the reality was too uncomfortable. Schneider suggested that if Biden had gotten up after his bike accident and blamed Putin, it would have gotten a laugh. The tendency to protect Biden rather than mock him represented a fundamental betrayal of comedy's purpose.

The Price of Being Conservative in Entertainment

When asked how it feels to go on social media and publicly identify as a Republican, Schneider was philosophical. "You just have to know you're going to get the ideological barrage from the moronic people saying horrible things about you and that's okay," he said. He pointed out the absurdity of Democrats complaining about conservative media when they control virtually all the tech companies, the Washington Post, and the New York Times.

Schneider highlighted the irony of people complaining about Elon Musk buying Twitter while working for Jeff Bezos at the Washington Post. "Is there any irony available in your brain at all?" he asked. He noted that conservatives have "one news channel and a guy that sells pillows" - a reference to Fox News and MyPillow's Mike Lindell - and questioned why even that minimal presence is controversial.

Tucker Carlson and Rational News

Schneider pointed to Tucker Carlson's ratings as evidence that people are hungry for what he calls "rational news" and "oppositional thought." He argued that Carlson's audience can't be all Republicans - there must be Democrats and independents watching because people want to hear different perspectives. This kind of diverse viewpoint representation, he noted, isn't allowed on CNN and other mainstream networks.

The Green Energy Religion

Schneider didn't hesitate to call out what he sees as the irrational religion of green energy. Comparing the current situation to the 1970s oil crisis, he questioned why America isn't using its abundant oil and gas resources. "There's no rationality. It doesn't work," he stated bluntly about green energy.

He recommended a documentary called "Planet of the Humans," produced by what he described as "the most leftist guy there is," which shows why green energy doesn't work. "I wanted it to work. It doesn't work," Schneider emphasized.

California's Electric Vehicle Disaster

Schneider pointed to California as a perfect example of green energy failure. He noted that California won't allow new gas stations while mandating electric vehicles, but people are waiting hours in lines to charge their Teslas - and even then, the charging terminals often don't work.

He mocked California Governor Gavin Newsom for telling residents not to charge their cars during certain hours. "You just told them to get a car, and those aren't the cheapest cars, and now I can't charge my car," Schneider said, calling it "lunacy." This kind of governmental overreach is precisely why he couldn't stay in California or remain a Democrat. "There's not one aspect of your life that the Democrats don't want to get involved in," he observed.

A New Family Film for Everyone

Despite the political divisions, Schneider's new film "Daddy Daughter Trip" is designed to appeal across party lines. "Democrat and Republican money is just as good," he joked, noting it's "newly printed" if you're liberal. He described the film as non-offensive and apolitical, made for people who like families. It's about dreams, families, and hanging onto dreams even when you have nothing - showing that you can still make something beautiful.

[00:01] truth

[00:04] you demand. This is the Brian

[00:05] kilmeade show with a president

[00:06] Biden pardoned thousands of

[00:09] convicted marijuana users.

[00:10] >> And feels like maybe he

[00:12] celebrated with them a little

[00:13] because yesterday Biden gave a

[00:14] speech at a car factory and

[00:16] open with this.

[00:18] >> We start off with to urge.

[00:21] >> Made in America.

[00:22] >> Wow well let me respond with

[00:23] 2 words.

[00:25] >> Jesus H Christ. Biden was

[00:29] then heard criticizing

[00:30] reporters at the White House

[00:32] for shouting questions at him

[00:33] questions like what year is it

[00:34] and who's the current

[00:36] president.

[00:39] >> So that's is edgy as I've

[00:43] heard SNL Yeah Snyder.

[00:43] >> And the whole point is to

[00:44] make fun of whoever's in power

[00:45] whether it's Democrats or.

[00:49] I remember one time we were

[00:50] making fun of the Clintons and

[00:53] Sweeney played the daughter,

[00:55] you know what's your kid the

[00:59] clip shows tell see Clint

[01:00] and we've got phone calls like

[01:02] one from the Democratic Party

[01:03] that's too much and make fun of

[01:04] that you can have the

[01:06] children's book the braces on

[01:07] everything and it's like you

[01:07] have to make fun of the people

[01:08] in power and I'm glad that

[01:10] they're doing it

[01:12] because that's what needs to

[01:14] happen. But Rob Rob it's not

[01:16] happening. I mean the jet

[01:16] hasn't happened member this is

[01:18] again one of those observations

[01:19] and you get to that Brian is

[01:22] really draft right thank

[01:23] >> look at Biden's out of it

[01:27] and it is done

[01:27] Jeffs the Degas played him when

[01:30] they were doing a mockery of

[01:31] the Democrats debate and that

[01:32] is having fun is making fun of

[01:33] me as know what's going on is

[01:35] talking too loud. He's

[01:36] interrupting.

[01:36] >> As soon as he got the

[01:37] nomination they bring in a guy

[01:38] that just acts normal as

[01:40] opposed

[01:43] to Trump and I wonder did did

[01:44] the SNL brass Lauren Michael

[01:45] just say I'm just concerned

[01:47] that a Republican to win with

[01:49] that. Trump will get another

[01:50] term and just throw comedy into

[01:51] the back burner. I think it's

[01:54] also affective like.

[01:55] >> It really was I mean Dana

[01:56] Carvey and I were talking about

[01:57] safe road and a curve into the

[01:58] bus right here, but no, but

[02:00] Dana said like when he first

[02:00] his you know his impressions

[02:01] are he's the greatest

[02:03] presidents we've ever had on

[02:04] Saturday Night Live. My for

[02:07] those great Biden D and

[02:08] his Biden he said when he first

[02:09] started doing it the audience

[02:10] we can't let that yet because

[02:14] true because it's like

[02:15] you know it's like seeing like

[02:16] you know, you know one of the

[02:17] deer gets hit on the side of

[02:18] the road are some of the is

[02:18] candid, you know jumping around

[02:21] it by no it's the calm and.

[02:23] It's like it's a car crash.

[02:26] It's like when his bike fell

[02:27] over yeah. Now if Biden got up

[02:28] and said putin made that bike

[02:29] it what it got a laugh, you

[02:32] know it would have yet but so I

[02:32] do think there was that that

[02:35] tendency but you have to make

[02:36] fun of the people in power

[02:37] right, I mean they had the idea

[02:39] that the Democrat says

[02:41] you know just manufactured this

[02:42] guy to run to become president

[02:43] because he was the least

[02:44] offensive of all the candidate

[02:45] is operative Sanders. Yeah, and

[02:48] it scared him at his word when

[02:51] so Rob how do you feel about

[02:52] going on social media now doing

[02:53] shows like this and come out

[02:55] say I'm a Republican. Well

[02:58] you just you have to know

[02:59] you're going to get the

[03:00] ideological barrage of from the

[03:02] moronic of you know people

[03:04] saying horrible things about

[03:05] you and that's okay look at it,

[03:08] I mean truthfully I

[03:09] mean the I don't know what the

[03:10] Democrats are complaining about

[03:11] they have all the tech

[03:12] companies to get if they got

[03:14] the got Washington Post New

[03:14] York Times. It's funny when

[03:15] people complaining about like

[03:19] how likely do you know if

[03:21] you know law mosque buys

[03:22] twitter he these billionaire

[03:23] having a billionaire by this

[03:24] and said don't you work for the

[03:27] Washington Post yes, yeah, they

[03:28] Zoe's is there any irony of

[03:30] available in your brain at all.

[03:32] >> And so but says that we have

[03:34] can we not what what are

[03:34] conservatives and we have one

[03:35] news channel and a guy that

[03:36] sells pillows right can we have

[03:40] that on

[03:43] that channel. Yeah only to

[03:44] say I invented a perfectly I am

[03:46] I Taos absorb water every tell

[03:47] absorbs water right but the

[03:48] thing is that we will have like

[03:49] my next guest tosi gathered and

[03:53] we'll have Democrats on

[03:53] we have.

[03:54] >> Harold Ford on and people

[03:56] give their opinions on on item

[03:58] number they'll be Democrats on

[03:59] the couch yes, well I mean if

[04:00] you look at Tucker Carlson's

[04:01] ratings, it can't be all it's

[04:04] not all Republicans. It's

[04:06] only it's there's rational

[04:08] news. There's absolutely and

[04:09] that's going to positional

[04:11] thought here and it's not

[04:12] allowed. Wright is not allowed

[04:14] on the on scene the C I look at

[04:16] rational to is that we're in an

[04:17] oil and gas shortage, this is

[04:20] my 1970's, we have enough oil

[04:22] and gas. While we not using it

[04:24] well because of this religion

[04:26] call green energy, they know to

[04:27] word is no rationality it

[04:28] doesn't work, I mean there's a

[04:29] beautiful documentary actually

[04:30] produced by like the most

[04:33] leftist K there is he's

[04:33] executive producing team made

[04:35] its called planet of the

[04:37] humans. Do yourself, a favor,

[04:39] your listeners watch that OK it

[04:42] just basically shows why green

[04:42] energy doesn't work I wanted to

[04:43] work it doesn't work and that's

[04:44] what you of California, one of

[04:46] the things it sits out you're

[04:48] not able to buy a car he does

[04:50] know where new gas stations

[04:51] allowed California, but you

[04:52] know it's crazy is that that

[04:53] use there was of great video on

[04:55] twitter of all places

[04:56] where everybody was lined up

[04:58] for hours trying to charge

[05:01] their tesla and

[05:02] they couldn't do it right and

[05:03] what is mostly filled their own

[05:04] terminals they still can't do

[05:05] it nice and they also I love

[05:06] that the governor of California

[05:08] is like hey listen don't you

[05:09] can't judge don't charge a car

[05:11] and a judge Mike are you just

[05:12] tell you just saw a man to get

[05:13] a car that can afford, but

[05:14] those aren't the cheapest cars.

[05:16] >> And now I can't charge my

[05:17] car. So it's lunacy does not

[05:18] one part of that's why like I

[05:21] could never I couldn't stay

[05:21] in California. I couldn't

[05:23] definitely say Democrat anymore

[05:24] is not one aspect of your life

[05:25] that the Democrats they want to

[05:26] get the one involved themselves

[05:29] and of your life

[05:31] but according to reports

[05:32] Democrats and Republicans will

[05:34] love Daddy's daughter trip

[05:34] they've does that not your is

[05:35] that your money is just as

[05:37] good. Its newly printed.

[05:38] >> If you're liberal would love

[05:41] to have you It's it's one of

[05:42] these not offensive a political

[05:44] movie says just for people who

[05:45] like families it's about fame

[05:46] about dreams and families in

[05:47] about the hanging on to dreams

[05:49] if you have nothing you can

[05:50] still make something beautiful

[05:52] all Tosi Gabbert next Rob

[05:53] you've been a wonderful

[05:54] surprise for Audi's for the

[05:56] last 45 minutes hopefully this

[05:57] is just the first of many
