TPUSA Officials Testify on SPLC's Role in Creating Environment Leading to Charlie Kirk Attack

Andrew Sypher, spokesperson for Turning Point USA, and Mr Perkins testified before a congressional subcommittee about the Southern Poverty Law Center's designation practices and their connection to violence against conservative voices. Sypher directly stated that SPLC's labeling of Charlie Kirk and others expressing biblical principles as hate groups created the environment that led to the September attack on Kirk. The hearing examined how government legitimization of SPLC's designations has transformed from free speech issues into matters affecting the legal system and civil rights, with both witnesses arguing that silencing dialogue rather than facilitating conversation has contributed to increased violence in American political discourse.

Congressional Testimony Links SPLC Labeling to Violence

In a congressional subcommittee hearing, Andrew Sypher, spokesperson for Turning Point USA, provided direct testimony connecting the Southern Poverty Law Center's designation practices to the September attack on Charlie Kirk. When asked whether SPLC's labeling of those expressing free speech views and biblical principles as hate groups created an environment leading to the attack, Sypher responded unequivocally: "Most definitely."

Sypher criticized the civil rights organization for what he characterized as marginalizing over half the country's viewpoints, particularly on college campuses. He pointed to the celebration of violence following assassination attempts as evidence of declining dialogue in America.

The Death of Dialogue on College Campuses

According to Sypher's testimony, Charlie Kirk has fought against the suppression of dialogue that organizations like SPLC promote. "That's why so many people crave to come to his [campus events]," Sypher stated. "That's why they crave to see him work through those thoughts with disagreers because people need to talk for violence to be done away with."

The testimony emphasized that Kirk's appeal stems from his willingness to engage with those who disagree with him, providing a model for productive discourse that stands in contrast to what witnesses described as SPLC's silencing tactics.

Government Legitimization of SPLC Creates New Threats

Tony Perkins, who also testified at the hearing, clarified the purpose of the congressional oversight: examining how government utilization of organizations like SPLC transforms the issue from mere free speech concerns into matters affecting the legal system and civil rights more broadly.

"As the government elevates that voice and legitimizes that voice, the media takes it and runs with it," Perkins explained. He noted that the dialogue that existed in Washington and across the nation 15 to 20 years ago has ceased, directly contributing to violence.

The Connection Between Silencing and Violence

Both witnesses emphasized that the best way to stop violence is through conversation and allowing people with differing views to speak, even when others disagree with them. Perkins characterized this as what a healthy nation does.

"The Southern Poverty Law Center is about silencing, not facilitating," Perkins stated in his closing remarks, drawing a clear distinction between organizations that promote dialogue and those that seek to shut it down.

The hearing concluded with the subcommittee chairman thanking the witnesses for their testimony and allowing members five legislative days to submit additional written questions. The testimony provided a congressional record linking SPLC's designation practices to creating environments conducive to political violence.
