How Campus Security Compared at Charlie Kirk's Speaking Events

Campus security became a subject of direct comparison across Charlie Kirk's own speaking history once investigators began examining how Utah Valley University's outdoor event compared to his other campus stops. University of Wyoming police chief Josh Holland described a considerably more restrictive indoor event when Kirk spoke there in April, with 15 officers, a no-bags and no-weapons policy, and screening for a smaller crowd of 1,800, a contrast reporters used to question why UVU's open-air amphitheater received only six campus officers for roughly 3,000 attendees. Former Turning Point security director Greg Schaefer offered outside perspective on the gap, drawing on his own experience securing large outdoor gatherings to evaluate what protocols should have applied at UVU regardless of the venue's open layout. Despite the scrutiny, Turning Point USA chose to return to Utah for campus events within weeks of the assassination, with senior director Lucas Miles describing an unprecedented surge of over 180,000 new chapter requests nationwide as evidence that campus organizing was expanding rather than retreating in the aftermath. The debate over adequate campus security also became personal for individual students: witnesses like Ryan Deere and Raydon DeChene, who stood feet from Kirk during the shooting, each separately noted the absence of any security checkpoint or rooftop monitoring as details they had questioned before the event even began.
