That dispute over responsibility for the security gap that let a gunman access the rooftop has become one of the more concrete, documented failures examined in the case, distinct from the more speculative theories that have circulated elsewhere. Officer Christopher Bagley's own preliminary-hearing testimony corroborated parts of the timeline, describing his discovery of a disturbed gravel pattern and a screwdriver on the same rooftop consistent with a sniper position after the single shot was fired. Utah's Commissioner for Public Safety, Beau Mason, confirmed publicly that authorities were treating the shooting as a targeted political assassination, with the FBI and local agencies co-leading an investigation that led to a person of interest before the alleged shooter himself was identified and apprehended. Harpole has separately faced legal action of his own connected to public statements he's made about the case.
