Charlie Kirk's Complicated Public Record on Israel

Charlie Kirk's relationship with Israel was more complicated than either his supporters or critics often gave him credit for. He described himself as a defender of Israel's right to exist as a homeland for the Jewish people, a position he traced to two personal trips where walking through biblical sites, including the Garden of Gethsemane, turned scripture into something he experienced firsthand rather than just read. But he was equally willing to criticize the Israeli government when he disagreed with it, questioning the intelligence failures that preceded the October 7th attack and, at times, specific military actions, which earned him accusations of being both a Jewish shill and an anti-Semite from opposite directions. In his final months, according to private text messages later made public, Kirk had grown more openly critical of aspects of pro-Israel orthodoxy within his own movement, proposing a podcast conversation with a prominent Israel critic and suggesting the two agreed on more than expected. After his death, Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet addressed the leaked messages directly, framing them as evidence of a man still working through a hard question rather than a hidden reversal, and insisting Kirk would not have wanted the debate over Israel to fracture the movement he built.
