North Korea in Charlie Kirk's Warnings About Authoritarianism

Defector Yeonmi Park's personal testimony is the main way North Korea entered Charlie Kirk's content. She escaped the country at thirteen after years of starvation and was later trafficked in China before reaching the United States. Park used her own experience to warn American audiences that tactics she associated with North Korean state control, including enforced ideological conformity and the suppression of independent thought, were beginning to appear in American schools and universities, framing freedom as something Americans risked taking for granted.
Kirk cited North Korea more briefly elsewhere as a reference point in debates about religion and government, grouping it with Communist China in a conversation with Bill Maher as an example of an atheistic regime whose record he argued undercut claims that societies don't need religious foundations for morality. Commentator Benny Johnson used North Korea in a similar illustrative role, noting that Bernie Sanders supporters he interviewed at the Iowa State Fair rarely cited it, or Cuba and Venezuela, when asked to name a country where socialism had actually succeeded, despite implicitly defending the same economic model those countries represent.
