Charlie Kirk is the Founder and President of Turning Point USA, the largest and fastest growing conservative youth activist organization in the country with over 250,000 student members, over 150 full-time staff, and a presence on over 2,000 high school and college campuses nationwide. Charlie is also the Chairman of Students for Trump, which aims to activate one million new college voters on campuses in battleground states in the lead up to the 2020 presidential election. His social media reaches over 100 million people per month and according to Axios, he is one of the "top 10 most engaged" Twitter handles in the world. He is also the host of “The Charlie Kirk Show,” which regularly ranks among the top news shows on Apple podcast charts.

Charlie Kirk Explains Why Armed Guards in Schools Matter More Than Stricter Gun Laws

Charlie Kirk addresses a college student's concerns about school safety and gun violence, particularly regarding her 10-year-old sister. While the student advocates for stronger background checks on high-powered weapons, Kirk challenges the notion that stricter gun laws automatically create safer societies. He points to California's existing gun regulations and questions why Americans protect banks, airports, and sports stadiums with armed security but leave schools vulnerable. Kirk argues that school resource officers represent a more effective solution to preventing tragedies, citing evidence that armed guards have successfully stopped or limited school shootings. The exchange reveals a fundamental disagreement about whether government intervention should focus on restricting gun ownership or protecting children through increased security measures.

Student Raises Concerns About School Safety and Her Younger Sister

A college student approached Charlie Kirk with a deeply personal concern about school safety, explaining that she and her parents worry daily about her 10-year-old sister attending school. She acknowledged that mental health and drug issues contribute significantly to violence in America, but questioned whether implementing stronger background checks, especially for high-powered weapons like AK-47s, would be a more reasonable and effective step to prevent school shootings and protect children.

Clarifying the Weapons Discussion

Kirk immediately corrected a common misconception in the gun debate. He explained that it is very difficult to purchase an AK-47, and that the student was probably referring to an AR-15, which is not the same weapon. He noted that many states already have background checks in place, before pivoting to a broader question about safety in society.

The California Safety Paradox

Kirk asked the student whether she felt safe walking the streets at night in Los Angeles as a woman. She admitted it depends on the area, and specifically acknowledged that she would not feel safe near the downtown convention center. This exchange established Kirk's central point: stricter gun laws do not automatically equal a safer society. California already has some of the strictest gun regulations in the country, yet safety remains a significant concern in many areas.

Why Americans Protect Everything Except Schools

Kirk then presented what he described as an "incredible moral perversion" in American priorities. He asked why society protects banks, airports, and sports stadiums with armed guards but not schools. He painted a vivid picture of the security disparities:

  • You cannot enter Dodger Stadium without seeing 50 police cars and armed personnel everywhere
  • LAX airport functions as basically a demilitarized zone with extensive security
  • Meanwhile, a local Long Beach elementary school has minimal protection

Kirk argued that Americans protect airplanes and sports teams but fail to protect their own children with the same level of security.

The Case for Armed Security in Schools

When the student acknowledged this was a fair point, Kirk doubled down on his position. He advocated for essentially locking down schools with armed security. He anticipated the common objection that people don't want schools to be militarized, countering that if you don't want security measures, then you don't truly want to protect kids. He drew another comparison: people want their money protected at banks and payday lenders protected, but refuse to extend the same protection to their own children.

Gun Ownership as a Right, Not a Privilege

Kirk then addressed the background check question more directly, explaining his philosophical position on firearms. He stated clearly that he believes gun ownership is a right, not a privilege, and that the government should not interfere with Americans' right to own firearms. This represents a fundamental disagreement with those who advocate for additional restrictions or regulations on gun purchases.

Why This Solution Isn't Implemented in California

The student asked why armed guards in schools aren't more widely discussed or implemented, noting that other states have adopted this approach. Kirk explained that Governor Gavin Newsom would refuse to implement such measures in California. However, he pointed to evidence from other states where, after major school shootings, police officers are parked outside schools and school resource officers with guns have been deployed.

The Evidence on School Resource Officers

Kirk cited research showing that school resource officers have proven effective in multiple ways:

  • They prevent school shootings from occurring in the first place
  • They limit the scope of school shootings when they do occur
  • They can intervene before a shooting happens

He emphasized that these security measures can dramatically reduce casualties, transforming potential tragedies where 30 or 40 students might have died into situations where only one or two students are harmed—still horrific, but significantly less devastating.

The Root Causes and Warning Signs

Kirk concluded by addressing the underlying issues behind school shootings. He noted that in almost every case, with some exceptions, perpetrators obtain guns from their parents. More importantly, these individuals are invariably in very dark and troubled places mentally. He stressed that there are almost always warning signs, troubling behaviors, and issues that manifest ahead of time but are ignored by parents, schools, or communities.

The exchange ended cordially, with the student thanking Kirk for his perspective and Kirk offering his blessing in return.
