The Origin Story: From Citizen Journalist to Movement Leader
Charlie Kirk's path to becoming one of the most recognized voices in conservative activism began with a simple encouragement from Breitbart News. When Kirk approached the outlet with a story idea, instead of taking it over themselves, they challenged him to be the citizen journalist—to write it, own it, and put himself out there. That moment became the catalyst for what would become a significant rise in conservative circles.
This origin story encapsulates the core philosophy Kirk now spreads through events and gatherings: that every person has the potential to make a difference, and in America, you never know where one act of engagement might lead.
The Legacy of Andrew Breitbart
Kirk openly admits he never met Andrew Breitbart personally, yet he considers himself an inheritor and promoter of Breitbart's legacy. He describes Breitbart as a grassroots warrior with no pretensions—the kind of person who would walk media row at a conference, sitting on tables and taking selfies with attendees.
According to Kirk, Andrew Breitbart played a unique and essential role in building what has become the MAGA coalition. While many figures contributed to the movement, Kirk identifies three titans who shaped the current political landscape: Donald Trump, Andrew Breitbart, and Rush Limbaugh.
Three Titans Who Built the Movement
Each of these three figures played a distinct role in creating the coalition that now commands popular vote majorities and electoral victories:
- Rush Limbaugh: Provided the daily drumbeat, setting the tone, casting the vision, analyzing events, and helping the audience interpret and understand the political landscape
- Andrew Breitbart: Inspired a different approach—challenging people to confront authority through grassroots action, empowering ordinary citizens to use the tools in their pockets to document, record, and be the change
- Donald Trump: The political figure who channeled this energy into electoral success
The Power of the Citizen Journalist
Breitbart's distinctive contribution was democratizing activism and journalism. His message was simple but transformative: you have a phone in your pocket—use it. Record what you see. Challenge what's wrong. You can be the change in the world.
This populism wasn't just political theory; it was a call to personal responsibility. Breitbart imbued the movement with the understanding that everyone must be responsible for themselves and play their own role. Kirk has carried this torch forward, using his platform to reach people with the same message: find your role and fulfill it.
Why Gatherings Matter
Some dismiss political conferences and summits as "just events," but Kirk passionately defends their significance. These gatherings are far more than networking opportunities—they are life-changing experiences that provide:
- Training and education
- Meaningful connections and friendships
- Future marriages and lifelong relationships
- Inspiration for people coming from liberal strongholds like New York, who return home fired up to fight
Kirk emphasizes that communal gathering places serve as essential infrastructure for the movement. They create spaces where individuals can discover their purpose, connect with like-minded people, and gain the tools and confidence to make a difference in their own spheres of influence.
The philosophy that began with Breitbart's encouragement—that anyone can be a citizen journalist, that everyone has a role to play—continues to shape how Kirk approaches activism and movement-building. It's a legacy of empowerment, grassroots engagement, and the belief that ordinary Americans, armed with nothing more than a smartphone and the courage to act, can change the trajectory of their country.

[00:00] I scripted more of my speech than usual
[00:01] this time and I have
[00:03] >> I miss I missed it. I'm sorry.
[00:04] >> No, I'm sure you're a busy guy, but it's
[00:06] the It's funny because I had two minutes
[00:08] to villibuster and the first thing I
[00:10] thought of was I'm going to tell
[00:11] Charlie's origin story about how you
[00:14] came to Breitbart News with an idea for
[00:16] a story and we said you handle it. You
[00:19] be the citizen journalist. You write it
[00:21] up. You be the one who put yourself out
[00:22] there. And that was the beginning of a
[00:25] amazing meteoric rise for you. But I
[00:27] think it does speak to the core of what
[00:29] you're trying to do at the summit, which
[00:30] is get people inspired to get involved
[00:33] at some level and you never know that in
[00:35] this country.
[00:35] >> Look, we we are all inheritors of the
[00:38] legacy of Andrew Breitbart. I never met
[00:40] him and that's I you know, I'm a I'm an
[00:42] affusive uh promoter of the legacy of
[00:45] Andrew, but here was this grassroots
[00:47] warrior that had no pretensions. He'd be
[00:49] walking media row right now just like
[00:50] sitting on tables taking selfies. Could
[00:52] you imagine? Right.
[00:53] >> I know. And you know, you kind of think
[00:55] of the legends of the last couple of
[00:58] decades that built this MAGA coalition
[01:00] where we're winning popular vote
[01:01] majorities, electoral vote majorities,
[01:03] the countries with us. I would have to
[01:05] probably point out a couple names.
[01:06] Obviously, Trump,
[01:08] >> Breitbart, Limbbo,
[01:09] >> those would be my big three,
[01:11] >> right? The big three that really got us
[01:12] to this moment. And they all played a
[01:14] different role. Rush was that daily drum
[01:16] beat, setting the tone, casting the
[01:18] vision, analyzing, interpreting,
[01:20] understanding. But Andrew did something
[01:22] different. He inspired, and most of
[01:24] these kids wouldn't even know the name
[01:25] Andrew Breitbart. They know the brand
[01:27] Breitbart, but he inspired a different
[01:29] way of challenging people in authority.
[01:31] Grassroots. You have a phone in your
[01:33] right-hand pocket. Use it. Record it.
[01:36] You can be the change in the world.
[01:37] >> Yeah. And he imbued that populism in
[01:39] terms of that we all have to be
[01:40] responsible for ourselves and our role
[01:42] in the movement. And I know that that's
[01:44] kind of how you're reaching people here
[01:45] is that you want everyone to play their
[01:47] own role and you want them to have
[01:48] communal gathering places, which is why
[01:50] it's great.
[01:50] >> So important. These events are so
[01:52] important. You know, some people say,
[01:54] "Oh, it's just an event." I said, "Just
[01:55] an event." The training, the
[01:57] connections, the future marriages, the
[01:59] friendships, the people come here from
[02:01] liberal New York and they're fired up to
[02:03] come back and fight. No, these events
[02:04] are life changers.
