Charlie Kirk on Fighting Progressive Textbooks and the Birth of Turning Point USA

October 5, 2012

Charlie Kirk shares the story of how challenging a Paul Krugman economics textbook in his high school classroom sparked the creation of Turning Point USA. Growing up in Chicago, Kirk noticed how progressive ideology was infiltrating education through biased curricula. When he questioned a textbook's claim that Reagan tax cuts didn't accelerate economic growth, he was sent to the hall, but that moment catalyzed his mission. Kirk argues that the real problem isn't just activist teachers, but empty chairs at school board meetings where parents fail to challenge propaganda. He calls on conservatives to fill those seats, defend their values, and prevent progressivism from dominating America's schools.

The Six Trillion Dollar Man

From the hope and change promised in 2008 to the reality of 2012, America witnessed a stark transformation. Six trillion dollars in new debt accumulated under an administration that promised fiscal responsibility. The contrast couldn't be more dramatic.

Speaking from the perspective of someone raised in Chicago, Kirk joked about the city's notorious voting reputation—where even his grandfather, a lifelong Republican who passed away 20 years prior, had supposedly been voting Democrat since 1981. These quips highlighted a deeper concern about institutional integrity and accountability.

The Paul Krugman Textbook That Changed Everything

Kirk recounts attending school in an affluent district north of Chicago. One day in economics class, students received new textbooks, and the excitement quickly turned to shock when he saw the author's name: Paul Krugman. A New York Times columnist and author of "The Conscience of a Liberal," Krugman argues for collective thought and defends entitlements as honorable.

Despite his reservations, Kirk approached the textbook with an open mind. But when he opened to page 183 and read the chapter title—"The Reagan Tax Cuts Did Not Accelerate Economic Growth"—he knew something was fundamentally wrong. The Congressional Budget Office data clearly showed that the Reagan tax cuts exploded economic growth. Anyone who lived through the 1980s knew this firsthand.

Kirk brought his concerns to his teacher, explaining that the textbook contradicted established economic data. Her response? "Well, he won a Nobel Prize, so he must be right." Kirk countered: "So did Obama." That earned him a trip to the hallway.

The Birth of Turning Point USA

That confrontation became the catalyst for founding Turning Point USA. Throughout his high school career, Kirk encountered wonderful teachers who changed his life for the better. But he also faced educators teaching from what he describes as a left-wing propaganda machine, pushing big government and entitlement mentality.

The question that haunted him wasn't just about activist teachers—it was about parental responsibility. Where were the parents at school board meetings when the Paul Krugman economics textbook got approved? Where were the voices demanding that such biased materials be kept away from taxpayer-funded classrooms?

The Empty Chair Epidemic

Kirk invoked the empty chair metaphor famously used by Clint Eastwood, but with a twist. The empty chair wasn't just in the White House—it existed in school board meetings across America. Conservatives often dismiss these meetings as unimportant, even though they're deliberately scheduled at inconvenient times, sometimes on Tuesday nights at midnight, running eight hours long to discourage attendance.

But these strategic barriers don't excuse absence. When parents fail to stand up for their beliefs and allow their children to be indoctrinated by big government ideology, they surrender the future of the country. The empty chairs represent abdicated responsibility at the most critical battleground: education.

A Call to Action

Kirk's final message was unequivocal: Do not under any circumstance let progressivism take over high schools and corrupt students, or America will never be the same. He called for conservatives to take a stand, vote for Mitt Romney, and recognize that fiscal conservatism was gaining ground among young people.

Kirk expressed confidence in victory and love for the stories of students taking on their administrations. The youth movement he helped ignite would become one of the most significant conservative organizing forces in America, all because one student refused to accept a false claim on page 183 of an economics textbook.

[00:00] And it's a total contrast from the hope

[00:02] and change to the reality of 2012. $6

[00:05] trillion in new debt. And you know, you

[00:07] know the $6 million man, he's the $6

[00:09] trillion man. He truly is. I'm going to

[00:12] talk. I'm from Chicago. And as you know,

[00:15] uh

[00:16] from Chicago, you can vote as many times

[00:18] as you want in one day. It doesn't

[00:21] matter. Uh my grandfather has been dead

[00:23] for 20 years. a lifelong Republican, but

[00:25] he's been voting Democrat since uh 1981,

[00:32] and I am uh I'm from the school

[00:33] district, a little north, very affluent

[00:35] area. But one day in economics class, we

[00:38] were distributing new textbooks. We got

[00:39] new textbooks. We were so excited. And

[00:41] the author just surprised me. Paul

[00:45] Krugman.

[00:48] Now, those of you who don't know who

[00:49] Paul Krugman is,

[00:51] he's from the New York Times. He writes

[00:53] for, you know, then he he's an

[00:55] interesting fellow. He wrote conscious

[00:56] of a liberal and he argues for the

[00:58] collective thought that entitlements are

[01:01] something that can be honorable. And it

[01:04] I said, "All right, I'll I'll go into

[01:05] this textbook non-bias." Maybe he went

[01:07] right went about this the right way. I

[01:09] open up to page 183, chapter title, the

[01:12] Reagan tax cuts did not accelerate

[01:14] economic growth.

[01:17] I go to my teacher and I say, "This is

[01:19] wrong. The CBO says they obviously

[01:21] exploded in growth." I mean, everybody

[01:22] who lived to the 80s know that. She

[01:24] says, "Well, he won a Nobel Prize, so he

[01:26] must be right." I said, "Well, so did

[01:28] Obama."

[01:36] And she said, she has some choice words.

[01:39] Charlie, you go in the hall.

[01:42] But that's what spawn me to uh start

[01:44] this movement, Turning Point USA.

[01:46] Throughout my career in high school, I

[01:47] had some wonderful teachers, teachers

[01:49] that changed my life. But there was also

[01:50] teachers that were teaching from a left

[01:53] purge from a propaganda machine that

[01:55] were pushing this big government

[01:56] entitlement mentality. And I got to

[01:58] thinking, okay, the teachers are one

[02:01] thing, but where was the parent in the

[02:03] schoolboard meeting when that when that

[02:04] economics textbook got approved? Where

[02:07] was the parent demanding that Kugman's

[02:10] book gets nowhere near our tax dollars?

[02:12] I'll tell you where. That's the empty

[02:14] chair Clinton was talking. empty chairs

[02:16] all across the country where

[02:17] conservatives say, "Oh, the school board

[02:19] meeting those aren't that important."

[02:21] It's they put it on Tuesday night at

[02:22] like midnight and they make it eight

[02:24] hours long for a reason. Granted, but

[02:26] still that empty chair that Clinton was

[02:29] talking about. If it was not just the

[02:30] empty chair in the White House cuz they

[02:31] all know that exists, but it's the empty

[02:33] chair in every single schoolboard across

[02:35] this country when people don't stand up

[02:37] for what they believe in or they let

[02:38] their students and their children get

[02:40] corrupted by big government. So, I have

[02:42] one final message. Do not under any

[02:44] circumstance let progressivism take over

[02:46] our high schools or your students or

[02:48] this country will never be the same.

[02:49] Take a stand. Vote for Mitt Romney. And

[02:52] one last thing, fiscal conservatism is

[02:54] taking over the youth. Believe and we

[02:56] will win in November. Thank you.

[03:10] I love the stories of students taking it

[03:13] to the administration in their
