Matt Walsh Traces Transgender Ideology From John Money to Modern Medical Industry Profiting Off Kids

Matt Walsh explores the origins of transgender ideology, tracing it from mid-20th century figures like John Money and Alfred Kinsey to its modern acceleration in the early 2010s. Walsh examines three key factors driving the movement: social media contagion among youth, a medical industry profiting billions from gender transitions, and ideological zealots promoting a Gnostic spirituality that separates body from soul. Speaking at a church gathering, Charlie Kirk challenges pastors to break their silence on this issue, criticizes the collapse of the distinction between sex and gender, and provides practical guidance for parents facing children influenced by transgender ideology.

The Historical Roots of Gender Ideology

The modern transgender movement traces back to the mid-20th century, specifically to figures like John Money and Alfred Kinsey. John Money is considered the father of gender ideology, being one of the first to promote the idea that there exists a distinction between sex and gender. This was a critical move in establishing the foundation for what would become modern transgender ideology.

Money introduced the concept that biological sex is separate from gender, with gender being defined as how someone presents themselves in the world. This distinction between sex and gender was essential to the development of the ideology. However, as time progressed, particularly around 2013-2015, transgender activists began collapsing this distinction. They started arguing that a trans woman is not just performing femininity or identifying as a woman, but actually is a woman with no distinction between the two categories.

This represents a slight of hand trick commonly employed by trans activists, where arguments are never followed to their logical conclusions. Instead, each argument simply sets the stage for the next claim, creating a moving target that makes coherent debate nearly impossible.

The Acceleration Point and Three Driving Forces

The transgender movement hit a dramatic acceleration point in the early 2010s, around 2012-2014. This acceleration can be attributed to three distinct but interconnected factors that converged during this period.

First, the proliferation of social media on smartphones created a social contagion effect, particularly among young people. Second, the medical industry recognized the enormous profit potential, with tens of millions to hundreds of millions of dollars to be made from gender transition procedures and ongoing treatments. Third, there emerged a group of true ideological believers who approach transgender issues with an almost religious fervor.

The medical professionals and institutions involved largely don't actually believe the underlying claims of transgender ideology. Most don't genuinely think a biological male is in any real sense a woman. However, the financial incentives proved overwhelming, with millions of dollars suddenly flooding into this industry, creating a rush to capitalize on the trend.

The Gnostic Spirituality Behind Trans Ideology

The true believers in transgender ideology operate from what amounts to a religious faith position, though they attempt to cloak it in scientific language. What they actually believe, when willing to articulate it honestly, is that a trans woman is a man who has the soul of a woman. This is fundamentally a spiritual claim, not a scientific one.

This belief system represents a form of ancient Gnosticism, a heresy that Christianity has historically rejected. Gnosticism, derived from the Greek word for mind (nosis), promotes the idea that the mind, body, and soul are separate, disconnected pieces. This stands in stark contrast to Christian teaching, which holds that body and soul are intrinsically connected and unified.

Christian theology emphasizes that our bodies have physical and spiritual meaning. Scripture refers to the body as the temple of the Lord and teaches that bodies will be resurrected. The Gnostic belief underlying transgender ideology suggests that one can have a soul or identity separate from what is objectively observable about the body, leading to claims that someone can be something they physically are not.

When pressed on where this female soul in a male body comes from, the logical conclusion introduces God into the equation, which creates significant problems for trans activists. It raises uncomfortable questions about whether God makes mistakes by putting the wrong soul in the wrong body, questions they prefer to avoid entirely.

Some have even extended this Gnostic thinking to claim animal identities. There are documented cases of schools making accommodations for students identifying as cats, including providing litter boxes in bathrooms. This represents an old form of paganism and beliefs in reincarnation that Christianity specifically challenged and replaced with monotheistic truth.

The Brain Argument and Scientific Manipulation

Trans activists often try to present a scientific veneer for their spiritual beliefs by claiming that some men have women's brains, pointing to various studies allegedly supporting this claim. However, this argument is fundamentally flawed from the start.

The definition of a man's brain is simply the brain that is inside the head of a man. By definition, whatever brain a man has is a man's brain. Any study claiming to show that a man has a woman's brain is completely bogus regardless of its funding, duration, sample size, or methodology because it violates this basic definitional truth.

This illustrates why engaging in study battles with trans activists often proves fruitless. When someone brings up a study claiming men can have women's brains, the appropriate response is to recognize that such a study is inherently flawed in its premise, making the details of its methodology irrelevant.

The Failure of the Church

The primary reason transgender ideology penetrated so deeply into institutions is the failure of the one institution specifically designed to stand as a vanguard against such evil: the church. During the critical years of 2016, 2017, 2020, and 2021, when battles were being fought at school board meetings, rallies, and in media, Christian leaders were conspicuously absent from the frontlines.

More often, liberal feminists could be found fighting transgender ideology than Christian pastors. Even worse, when pastors did comment, they frequently condemned those fighting the ideology for being too rude or too mean, offering no alternative approach of their own while contributing nothing but silence.

While woke churches displaying rainbow flags represent an obvious problem, the bigger issue has been lukewarm, milquetoast churches that avoid saying anything objectionable but also fail to address critical issues. These churches say things that are technically true but omit what desperately needs to be said, creating a dangerous void.

Christians sit in church as soldiers coming off a spiritual battlefield, bruised and broken after six days in the world. Church should be where they receive their marching orders, regroup, and discuss battle plans. Instead, too often church feels like a meeting with an HR representative or a guidance counselor, led by pastors who seem to live in a different reality than their congregations.

Parents whose children were being captured by transgender ideology would attend church for years without ever hearing the issue mentioned, as if it didn't exist. This represents not just negligence but a sin of omission. When pastors remain silent on controversial issues, they communicate to their congregations that these issues don't matter. There is no middle ground on morally critical issues; silence itself is a statement.

Practical Guidance for Parents

When a parent faces a child struggling with transgender ideology, the response must be rooted in genuine love, which means never surrendering the child to this madness. The child may express hatred, scream, and lock themselves in their room, but parents must never give in to the lie that upsetting their child means they don't love them. In this situation, the fact that the child is upset actually indicates the parent is responding correctly.

On a practical level, parents must examine and eliminate harmful influences. If a 13-year-old is experimenting with the idea of being trapped in the wrong body, they almost certainly have a smartphone and social media access. The phone must be taken away completely, not just limited. No screens should be allowed in rooms where doors can be shut. Any screen time should occur in public areas of the home where parents can monitor what is being watched.

Parents should also evaluate their child's friend groups and consider extreme measures if necessary, including removing children from public school and homeschooling if that's what protection requires. These measures may seem extreme but they are workable and necessary.

Pastors should familiarize themselves with Dr. Miriam Grossman's book "Lost in Trans Nation." Dr. Grossman is an actual clinician who treats children with gender dysphoria, not merely a theoretical thinker. Until recently, the treatment protocol was watchful waiting, based on the belief that puberty was the solution, not the problem. Approximately 99% of children would grow out of gender confusion without intervention.

Critical Facts About Youth Gender Dysphoria

Several important facts characterize the youth transgender phenomenon. First, 75% of cases involve girls, which matters because girls are far more susceptible to social contagions, including cutting practices, dressing to accommodate peers, and responding to social stigmas and clique pressure. Young women ages 12-14 are in a particularly vulnerable period of life when transgender ideology specifically targets them.

Second, there is a very high correlation between autism or other neurodivergent disorders and falling victim to transgender ideology. Children with autism face a significantly higher likelihood of being captured by this social contagion.

Third, pastors must do everything possible to prevent parents from taking their child to a medical doctor for gender-related treatment. Even pediatricians who have treated a child since infancy are now being trained in what amounts to medieval witchcraft science that recommends hormone blockers. The guidelines of the American Pediatric Association are shocking in their promotion of harmful interventions.

The typical medical pathway starts with a visit to a pediatrician, who develops a plan involving hormone blockers and a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist then recommends Lupron intervention, eventually leading to surgery that can result in mastectomy by age 16. That pediatrician has been schooled to believe this is a body disorder when it is actually a brain disorder.

The first interaction with a potentially gender-confused child is critical. Parents should ask extensive questions: Where did you hear about this? When did you start thinking this way? Are any of your friends thinking this way? Being infinitely curious about the condition, rather than immediately reacting, helps defenses come down and creates an environment of love and genuine concern.

Preventing the Problem Before It Starts

Beyond responding to an existing crisis, parents should focus on preventing children from reaching the point of gender confusion in the first place. This involves removing harmful influences like phones and social media, but at a deeper level, it requires maintaining attachment with children.

Children should stay attached to their parents in the sense that they orient themselves to the world based on their parents' guidance. Throughout most of human history, children figured out how to be in the world, how to be a person, how to be a man or woman, by looking at their parents, grandparents, and elders.

In the era of public school and especially social media, this bond is often severed very early. Children begin orienting themselves to the world by looking at their peers instead of their parents. They stop caring what their parents think and actively reject parental guidance. While modern society treats teenage rebellion as a normal phase, this was not the case historically. In 1832, it was not taken for granted that a 14-year-old would hate their parents.

This happens now because culture actively works to rip children away from parents and elders who love and know them, placing them in a confusing environment where they learn about the world by looking to other confused peers. This creates a cycle of confusion where young people follow each other in circles.

Fathers play a particularly critical role. Young boys literally look to their fathers constantly to figure out what being a boy means. They have masculine energy and aggressiveness but don't know where to direct it. They need fathers to show them, not just tell them, how to apply these qualities. Similarly, mothers show daughters what it means to be a woman. Without both parents demonstrating these roles, confusion naturally arises.

Statistics suggest that approximately 70% of children who transition come from single-parent homes or homes without a father. However, there's also a category of overly hyperinvolved parents who take children all the way to surgical intervention. These parents face emotional blackmail from doctors who ask whether they'd rather have an alive son than a dead daughter, putting them on a sequence of interventions that's difficult to escape.

The Call to Action for Church Leaders

The absence of fathers contributes to every serious societal problem. There is no cultural or societal issue that can be discussed coherently without acknowledging that so many children grow up without fathers. This factor should be discussed more prominently regarding transgender ideology specifically.

Church leaders must break their silence and provide environments of moral and spiritual clarity. While a youth pastor might not see immediate results from a couple hours per week with kids whose parents aren't fully engaged, planting seeds of truth can sprout into something meaningful down the line. The effect may not be visible in the moment, but clarity provided now will have impact in the future.

Parents struggling with these issues need to be ministered to directly. They need significant help and spiritual guidance. If parents aren't on board, are confused, scared, or don't know what to do, any work with their children will constantly push against that resistance.

The final marching order for church leaders is simple: take this message back to churches. Play clips addressing these issues. Break the silence. Provide the moral clarity that congregations desperately need. The sin of silence must end, and churches must fulfill their calling to stand as a vanguard against the evil of transgender ideology that is destroying children and families.
