Karen Bass at the Center of Kirk's LA Crisis Critiques

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass became a recurring target in Charlie Kirk's commentary on California governance. He invoked her directly during his coverage of the January 2025 Pacific Palisades and Los Angeles County wildfires, which Kirk argued resulted from deliberate policy failures rather than an unavoidable natural disaster, calling for federal criminal investigations into both Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom over what he characterized as gross negligence in water management and fire department resourcing. Kirk connected Bass to the city's homelessness crisis in a separate campus debate, arguing the problem could be resolved with sufficient political will, citing San Francisco's rapid street cleanup ahead of a visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping as evidence that officials chose to tolerate visible homelessness rather than lacking the capacity to address it.
Bass drew further scrutiny from Kirk's network during the summer 2025 Los Angeles immigration enforcement protests. She and Newsom called for ICE to release detained individuals — a position DHS spokesperson Trisha McLaughlin countered by detailing specific violent offenders (including a rapist and a convicted murderer) among those ICE had taken into custody during the operation. Bass also imposed a curfew during the unrest. Kirk and Mark Halperin discussed the curfew as evidence of a broader Democratic Party split between officials acknowledging the violence directly and those continuing to describe the unrest as peaceful protest.
