Charlie Kirk on Right Wing Revolution, Trump's 2020 Obsession, and How Republicans Should Handle Abortion

Charlie Kirk discusses his book 'Right Wing Revolution: How to Beat the Woke and Save the West' in a revealing conversation about the state of American conservatism. Kirk addresses the growing resistance to left-wing policies across Europe and America, defending his optimism about a conservative resurgence despite Biden's competitive polling against Trump. The Turning Point USA founder tackles tough questions about Trump's fixation on the 2020 election, arguing it no longer serves Republicans well, and shares his perspective on how the GOP should navigate the abortion issue without losing elections. Kirk offers a pragmatic view of conservative politics, balancing his pro-life convictions with electoral reality while pointing to encouraging signs like 62% of Americans now supporting mass deportations.

Signs of Conservative Resurgence Across the Western World

Charlie Kirk opens the conversation by defending his thesis that a Right Wing Revolution is possible, pointing to political shifts happening across Europe and Latin America. He notes rumblings in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, as well as significant changes in Argentina and El Salvador. Kirk clarifies that his vision of a "Right Wing Revolution" isn't radical—it's about recentering the country around normal, agreeable public policy positions from the late 1980s or early 1990s.

According to Kirk, this means returning to basic principles: having a functional border, protecting children from medical mutilation, and implementing more orderly, sensible, and less radical policies. He observes that across the Western world, everyday citizens are increasingly resisting left-wing policies of mass migration, cheap money, and inflation, wanting to return to how things were before.

The Biden-Trump Polling Paradox

When confronted with the puzzling reality that Biden remains competitive with Trump despite presiding over what many see as colossal damage to the country, Kirk acknowledges the complexity of presidential politics. With 70% of Americans saying the country is going in the wrong direction, conventional wisdom suggests Biden should be down 20 points, yet he's not.

Kirk explains that presidential elections are tricky and personality-driven rather than policy-driven. He points to a CBS poll showing that 62% of Americans support mass deportations—a position that wasn't mainstream five or ten years ago. However, he concedes the dichotomy: while that's Trump's position and 62% support it, Trump isn't polling at 62% against Biden.

Kirk shares a fascinating poll result showing Democrats love the idea of no taxes on tips for waiters and waitresses—until they discover it's Donald Trump's policy position, at which point support drops by 50 points. This demonstrates that on the issue set, America is more center-right than commonly believed, particularly on immigration and the size and scope of government.

Trump's 2020 Election Obsession Is Hurting Him

Kirk offers a surprisingly candid assessment when asked if Trump's continued focus on the 2020 election is holding him back with independent voters. He agrees completely, stating there's "a season for all things" and that while discussing election security improvements was helpful immediately after 2020, talking about it now "does not do us any good."

When asked how Trump should handle the inevitable question from Jake Tapper about accepting the 2020 election results during the upcoming debate, Kirk initially suggests there are "a variety of ways" to navigate it. However, when pressed, he agrees with the recommendation that Trump should simply look at the camera and state: "It is my opinion that the vote in 2020 was flawed. I would like to know where the $300 million that Mark Zuckerberg put into the election went. And I think those are legitimate opinions to hold." Then stop.

Kirk emphasizes that Trump is at his best when he's a forward-facing, vision-casting candidate, especially to contrast against the disaster of the Biden presidency. Biden will likely try to pile on during this exchange, making preparation essential.

Navigating the Abortion Issue With Electoral Wisdom

Kirk offers a nuanced perspective on how Republicans should handle abortion, carefully establishing his credentials as someone "resolutely pro-life" while also wanting to win elections. He argues Republicans must operate with prudence and put the issue in the hands of voters.

Using Arizona as an example, Kirk acknowledges with "a little bit of sadness" that it's a pro-choice, pro-abortion state. He says Republicans need to find some agreeable limit that allows them to still win elections while making progress in the pro-life direction.

Kirk points out that 70% of Americans don't think abortion up until the point of birth should be allowed, which could put Democrats on defense. He stresses that while he's pro-life, if Republicans don't approach this issue correctly or with wisdom, it could end up being a losing political issue. The failure to recognize or acknowledge this reality, he warns, means not living in the current American political landscape.

About the Book and Charlie Kirk

Kirk's book 'Right Wing Revolution: How to Beat the Woke and Save the West' represents well-researched analysis of the current political moment. As the founder of Turning Point USA and host of a radio program on Salem, Kirk has written three other books and established himself as a committed conservative voice. At 30 years old, he provides valuable insight into how younger Americans are thinking about conservative politics and the challenges facing the movement.
