Ricky Gervais Hosts His Final Golden Globes With Brutal Hollywood Takedown

Ricky Gervais delivered his most unfiltered Golden Globes monologue, declaring it his last time hosting the ceremony. The British comedian spared no one, from the Hollywood Foreign Press to Netflix, from Marvel movies to celebrity activism. Gervais attacked Hollywood hypocrisy, called out executives terrified of Ronan Farrow, mocked actors lecturing the public while working for companies running sweatshops, and told winners to skip political speeches. His scorched-earth approach to the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards left the room of A-list celebrities squirming as he reminded them they're "in no position to lecture the public about anything."

The Final Hosting Gig

Ricky Gervais opened the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles by announcing this would be his last time hosting. "You'll be pleased to know this is the last time I'm hosting these Awards so I don't care anymore," he declared. "I'm joking. I never did." The British comedian set the tone immediately, noting that NBC clearly didn't care either since they invited him back for a fifth time.

Gervais referenced the Kevin Hart Oscar controversy, explaining he got lucky because the Hollywood Foreign Press "can barely speak English and they've no idea what Twitter is." He encouraged the audience to remember they're "just jokes" and that "we're all going to die soon and there's no sequel."

Taking Aim at Celebrity Scandals

The comedian wasted no time targeting recent Hollywood scandals. He joked about arriving in a limo with a license plate "made by Felicity Huffman," referencing the actress's involvement in the college admissions scandal. Gervais claimed to feel sorry for her daughter, calling it "the most embarrassing thing that's ever happened to her—and her dad was in Wild Hogs."

The room filled with what Gervais described as "some of the most important TV and film Executives in the world, people from every background," but he noted they "all have one thing in common—they're all terrified of Ronan Farrow." Looking directly at the audience, he warned: "He's coming for you."

Controversial Jokes Push Boundaries

Gervais delivered several jokes that tested even his reputation for boundary-pushing humor. He called it "a big year for pedophile movies," citing "Surviving R. Kelly," "Leaving Neverland," and "Two Popes." When the audience reacted, he responded: "Shut up. I don't care."

He addressed diversity issues, noting that "many talented people of color were snubbed in major categories." His take? "Unfortunately there's nothing we can do about that. The Hollywood Foreign Press are all very very racist." He also joked about skipping the In Memoriam segment because "when I saw the list of people that had died it wasn't diverse enough—it was mostly white people and I thought nah not on my watch."

Perhaps his most controversial moment came when discussing Jeffrey Epstein. After joking about his Netflix show "After Life," where a character wants to kill himself, Gervais said the character "obviously didn't kill himself—just like Jeffrey Epstein." When the audience groaned, he shot back: "Shut up. I know he's your friend but I don't care."

The Death of Cinema and Rise of Streaming

Gervais attacked the current state of entertainment, declaring that "no one cares about movies anymore. No one goes to the cinema. No one really watches Network TV. Everyone's watching Netflix." He suggested the show should just be him "coming out going 'well done Netflix, you win everything, good night'" instead of dragging it out for three hours.

He criticized modern Hollywood films as "awful lazy remakes, sequels," noting that "all the best actors have jumped to Netflix and HBO." For actors still doing Hollywood movies, he claimed their job "isn't acting anymore—it's going to the gym twice a day and taking steroids." He joked about giving an award for "most ripped junkie" but noted there was "no point—we know he'd win that."

Martin Scorsese vs Marvel

Gervais weighed in on Martin Scorsese's controversial comments about Marvel films. The legendary director had said they're "not real Cinema" and reminded him of "theme parks." Gervais agreed, adding: "Although I don't know what he's doing hanging around theme parks—he's not big enough to go on the rides is he? He's tiny."

While praising "The Irishman" as "amazing," Gervais noted it was "long but amazing." He then targeted Leonardo DiCaprio and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," joking that the nearly three-hour film meant that "by the end his date was too old for him." He quipped: "Even Prince Andrew is like come on Leo mate, you know you're nearly 50 son."

Cats Gets Clawed

Gervais didn't spare "Cats," referencing James Corden as "a fat pussy" before noting "he was also in the movie Cats but no one saw that." He described the reviews as "shocking," citing one that said "this is the worst thing to happen to cats since dogs."

When Dame Judi Dench defended the film, saying it was "the role she was born to play," Gervais started a joke about her character but stopped himself mid-sentence with a crude punchline about the actress, to shocked laughter from the audience. He shrugged it off: "She's old school. It's the last time, who cares?"

The Hypocrisy of Woke Hollywood

Gervais saved his most pointed criticism for Hollywood's political activism. He called out Apple's "The Morning Show" as "a superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing, made by a company that runs sweat shops in China."

He expanded on this theme: "You say you're woke but the companies you work for—I mean unbelievable. Apple, Amazon, Disney. If ISIS started a streaming service you'd call your agent wouldn't you?"

His final warning to potential award winners became the monologue's defining moment: "If you do win an award tonight don't use it as a platform to make a political speech. You're in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg."

He instructed winners to "come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your God and fuck off."

Wrapping Up the Ceremony

As the monologue concluded, Gervais acknowledged the show was "already 3 hours long" before introducing the first award for best actor in a television series musical or comedy. The presenters were Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, whom he introduced simply as "a couple of actors off the telly."

The monologue cemented Gervais's reputation for fearlessly confronting Hollywood's elite, refusing to play by the industry's unwritten rules even—or especially—during his final appearance as host.
