John McCain as Charlie Kirk's Symbol of Failed Old-Guard Conservatism

John McCain became one of Charlie Kirk's most direct targets whenever he wanted to illustrate the failed foreign-policy instincts of pre-Trump Republican politics. Confronting a Washington State University student who raised Trump's past comment that McCain wasn't a war hero because he had been captured, Kirk declined to defend McCain at all. He argued instead that McCain's own foreign policy record, authoring the case for the Iraq War and the Libyan intervention and sustained hostility toward Russia and Iran, had contributed to roughly a million deaths across the Middle East, framing his service record as separate from and less relevant than his subsequent policy choices.

Kirk grouped McCain repeatedly with Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan as the small-government-but-endless-war conservatism he argued had failed at the ballot box until Trump reconfigured the party, and credited McCain and Jeff Flake's opposition to Trump as proof they had never represented their voters' actual values. Commentator Blake Neff extended the critique historically, describing the Bush and McCain-Romney era as a defeated, apologetic period when conservatives felt they needed permission from opponents to hold their own positions. A critic of Kirk drew the sharpest contrast after his death, pointing to Trump's public disrespect of McCain, a decorated Vietnam veteran, as evidence of inconsistency in how the same administration later honored Kirk with a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom and a four-day half-staff flag order.
